Overview#

Ars Nouveau is a modern magic mod inspired by Ars Magicka, focusing on player-created spells, magical automation, and powerful artifacts. Unlike many magic mods that rely on pre-defined spells, Ars Nouveau provides a modular system where players combine Glyphs to define a spell's form, effect, and power. The mod introduces a unique energy system called Source, which fuels magical machines and rituals, and features a variety of magical creatures that can be tamed or summoned to automate tasks.

Key features include:

  • Custom Spell Crafting: Create spells on the fly using a tiered system of glyphs.
  • Magical Automation: Use creatures like Starbuncles and Wixies to move items and brew potions.
  • Source Energy: A flexible power system generated through natural processes like farming or mob interaction.
  • Rituals: Large-scale magical ceremonies for world manipulation and boss summoning.
  • Tiered Progression: Advance from a Novice to an Archmage by upgrading your spellbook and equipment.

Getting Started#

To begin your journey into sorcery, you must first craft the fundamental tools of the trade.

The Worn Notebook

The Worn Notebook is the primary guide for the mod. It contains detailed information on every block, item, and mechanic. It is crafted by combining a standard Book with one Lapis Lazuli.

The Novice Spellbook

Your first spellbook allows you to cast Tier 1 spells. To craft it, combine a Book with an iron shovel, pickaxe, axe, and sword in a crafting table. This book comes pre-loaded with basic glyphs: Touch, Projectile, Self, Break, and Harm.

The Scribe's Table

The Scribe's Table is where you learn new glyphs. It is crafted using Archwood Logs, Archwood Slabs, and Gold Nuggets. To use it, place a Blank Parchment on the table, right-click it with your Spellbook, and select the glyph you wish to learn. You must provide the required items to the table to complete the learning process.

Mana and Source#

Ars Nouveau utilizes two distinct types of energy: Mana and Source.

Mana

Mana is the personal energy used by the player to cast spells. It is represented by a blue bar on the HUD.

  • Max Mana: Can be increased by wearing magical armor (Novice, Mage, or Archmage sets) and equipping baubles like the Ring of Mana.
  • Mana Regen: The speed at which mana recovers. This is also influenced by armor and artifacts.

Source

Source is the "world energy" used to power machines, rituals, and automated systems. It is stored in Source Jars.

Block Function Capacity
Source Jar Stores Source energy for nearby machines. 10,000
Source Relay Transports Source between jars and machines. N/A
Dominion Wand Used to link Sourcelinks to jars and relays. N/A

Source Generation#

Source must be generated using Sourcelinks. Each type of Sourcelink converts different world events into Source energy.

Sourcelink Types

  • Agronomic Sourcelink: Generates Source from the growth of nearby crops and trees. It is most efficient when placed near Sourceberries or Magebloom.
  • Volcanic Sourcelink: Consumes burnable fuels (like Coal or Blaze Rods) to produce Source. It also generates heat, which can convert nearby Stone into Magma or Lava.
  • Mycelial Sourcelink: Consumes food items to generate Source. Higher saturation foods provide more energy. It also slowly converts nearby Dirt into Mycelium.
  • Vitalic Sourcelink: Generates Source when mobs breed, grow up, or die nearby. It also accelerates the growth of baby animals.
  • Alchemical Sourcelink: Consumes potions from nearby Potion Jars to generate large amounts of Source based on the potion's complexity.

Spell Crafting and Glyphs#

Spells are constructed by combining three types of Glyphs: Forms, Effects, and Augments.

Glyph Categories

  1. Forms: Determine how the spell is delivered (e.g., Projectile, Touch, Self, AOE).
  2. Effects: Determine what the spell does (e.g., Harm, Break, Ignite, Heal).
  3. Augments: Modify the properties of the spell (e.g., Amplify increases damage, Pierce allows projectiles to pass through targets).

Spellbook Tiers

  • Novice Spellbook: Access to Tier 1 Glyphs.
  • Mage Spellbook: Access to Tier 2 Glyphs. Crafted with a Novice Spellbook, Diamonds, Quartz Blocks, and Blaze Rods.
  • Archmage Spellbook: Access to Tier 3 Glyphs. Requires a Mage Spellbook and a Wilden Tribute (dropped by the Wilden Chimera boss).

Common Glyphs

Tier Glyph Type Effect
1 Projectile Form Fires a magical bolt.
1 Break Effect Breaks blocks (equivalent to iron pickaxe).
1 Harm Effect Deals magic damage to entities.
2 AOE Augment Applies the effect in a radius.
2 Amplify Augment Increases the power/damage of the effect.
3 Orbit Form Spells circle the caster.

Mobs and Creatures#

Ars Nouveau adds several unique mobs, ranging from helpful familiars to dangerous predators.

Hostile Mobs: The Wilden

The Wilden are the primary antagonists found in the world, often spawning in Archwood Forests.

  • Wilden Stalker: A fast melee attacker. Drops Wilden Wing.
  • Wilden Hunter: A ranged attacker that fires arrows. Drops Wilden Horn.
  • Wilden Guardian: A slow, heavily armored tank. Drops Wilden Spike.

Magical Helpers (Familiars)

These creatures can be summoned or tamed to automate your base.

  • Starbuncle: Small, squirrel-like creatures that move items between inventories. They are attracted to Gold Nuggets. When a wild Starbuncle is given a nugget, it leaves behind a Starbuncle Token.
  • Drygmy: Goblin-like creatures that harvest drops from nearby mobs without killing them. They require a "Drygmy Henge" to operate.
  • Whirlisprig: Plant spirits that automate the harvesting of crops and trees.
  • Wixie: Witch-like helpers that can automate potion brewing and crafting at a Scribe's Table.

Blocks and Machines#

Imbuement Chamber

The Imbuement Chamber is used to create Source Gems by placing Lapis Lazuli or Amethyst Shards inside. If a Source Jar is nearby, the process is significantly faster.

Enchanting Apparatus

The Enchanting Apparatus is a multi-block structure used for advanced crafting and enchanting. It requires an Arcane Core placed directly beneath it and Arcane Pedestals placed within a 3-block radius. Items are placed on the pedestals, and a reagent is right-clicked onto the Apparatus to begin the craft.

Ritual Brazier

The Ritual Brazier is used to perform powerful rituals. It requires Ritual Tablets to define the effect. Once a tablet is placed, the brazier can be augmented by throwing items into the flame before activation.

Rituals#

Rituals provide large-scale effects that can alter the environment or summon powerful entities.

Ritual Tablet Ingredients Effect
Binding Source Gem, Vexingwood, Ender Pearl Turns a tamed creature into a Familiar bound to your spellbook.
Awakening Archwood Saplings, Flourishing Log Upgrades materials and creates magical seeds.
Summon Wilden Wilden Horn, Wing, Spike Summons the Wilden Chimera boss.
Forestation Saplings, Earth Essence Rapidly grows trees in a large area.
Burrowing Iron Pickaxe, Coal Digs vertical shafts down to bedrock.

Bosses: The Wilden Chimera#

The Wilden Chimera is the ultimate challenge in Ars Nouveau. It is summoned via the Ritual of Summon Wilden by augmenting the Ritual Brazier with a Wilden Horn, Wilden Wing, and Wilden Spike.

  • Behavior: The Chimera has three phases, each representing one of the Wilden types (Stalker, Hunter, Guardian). It regenerates its health fully between phases.
  • Abilities: It can summon Wilden minions, fire barrages of projectiles, and perform devastating ground slams.
  • Drops: Upon defeat, it drops the Wilden Tribute, which is essential for crafting the Archmage Spellbook.

World Generation#

Ars Nouveau adds magical flora to the Minecraft world, primarily found in the Archwood Forest biome.

Archwood Trees

There are four varieties of Archwood trees, each with unique properties and colors:

  • Cascading (Blue): Found near water; leaves can drop fish.
  • Flourishing (Green): High sapling drop rate; associated with growth.
  • Blazing (Orange): Leaves can drop Blaze Gold; logs are high-efficiency fuel for Volcanic Sourcelinks.
  • Vexing (Purple): Associated with manipulation and spirits.

Plants

  • Sourceberry Bushes: Found in forests. The berries can be eaten for a small mana boost or used in Source generation.
  • Magebloom: A magical flower grown from seeds crafted in the Enchanting Apparatus. Its fibers are used to create magical cloth for armor.
