Overview#
Prefab is a powerful building utility mod designed to streamline the base-building process in Minecraft. Instead of spending hours gathering materials and placing blocks manually, players can craft specialized Blueprints that instantly generate entire buildings. The mod includes everything from basic starter shelters and massive storage warehouses to complex automated farms and defensive bunkers.
One of the mod's standout features is the Structure Preview system, which allows players to see a 'ghost' version of the building in the world before committing to the placement. This ensures that structures fit perfectly within the terrain and are oriented correctly. Prefab is designed to be survival-friendly, balancing the convenience of instant building with the requirement of 'Compressed' blocks, which represent the massive amount of raw materials needed for such large constructions.
Core Mechanics#
The Blueprint System
To build any structure, you must first craft its corresponding Blueprint item. Once held, right-clicking with the Blueprint opens a dedicated Graphical User Interface (GUI) where you can configure the structure's style, orientation, and additional features (such as including a mineshaft or specific chest contents).
Structure Preview
Every structure GUI features a Preview button. Clicking this creates a non-solid, translucent projection of the building in the world.
- Movement: You can walk through the preview to check interior spacing.
- Adjustment: While the preview is active, you can move around to see how it aligns with the environment.
- Finalization: Once satisfied, return to the GUI and click 'Build' to place the blocks permanently.
Clear Area Function
Most blueprints include an option to 'Clear Area.' When enabled, the mod will automatically remove any existing blocks (grass, dirt, trees, etc.) within the footprint of the new structure to ensure a flat and clean foundation.
Compressed Blocks & Materials#
To maintain game balance, Prefab introduces 'Compressed' versions of vanilla blocks. These are used as the primary ingredients for crafting high-tier blueprints.
| Block Name | Compression Levels | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Compressed Stone | 1x, 2x, 3x | Used for heavy foundations and the Advanced Warehouse. |
| Compressed Dirt | 1x, 2x | Used for landscaping and basic house blueprints. |
| Compressed Gravel | 1x, 2x | Used in road and path-related structures. |
| Compressed Sand | 1x, 2x | Used for glass-heavy or desert-themed structures. |
| Compressed Obsidian | 1x, 2x | Used for blast-resistant structures and the Nether Gate. |
| Compressed Glowstone | 1x | A compact light source used in advanced blueprints. |
Intermediate Crafting Items
- Bundle of Timber: Crafted from 9 logs; used for wooden structural elements.
- Heap of Timber: Crafted from 9 Bundles of Timber; used for massive wooden buildings.
- Pile of Bricks: Crafted from 9 bricks; used for masonry-heavy structures.
- Pallet of Bricks: Crafted from 9 Piles of Bricks; used for the Warehouse and large homes.
- Compressed Chest: Crafted from 9 chests; used in storage-focused blueprints.
Utility Blocks#
Prefab adds several unique blocks that provide utility beyond simple decoration:
- Phasic Block: These blocks are normally solid but become invisible and non-solid when they receive a Redstone signal. They can cascade this effect to up to 100 neighboring Phasic Blocks, making them ideal for secret doors or hidden bridges.
- Boundary Block: An invisible block that prevents players and mobs from passing through. It becomes visible only when receiving a Redstone signal, allowing for invisible walls or safety barriers.
- Paper Lantern: A decorative light source that provides the same light level as a torch but with a unique aesthetic. It is often used in structures designed for early-game survival.
Starter Structures#
The Starter House is the most iconic element of the mod. It provides a fully furnished home to jumpstart a new world. Depending on the configuration, it may include a bed, crafting table, furnace, and a chest containing basic tools and food.
Available Styles:
- Basic: A simple, functional brick and wood home.
- Ranch: A single-story sprawling home with a fenced yard.
- Loft: A modern quartz-based home with multiple levels.
- Hobbit: A cozy underground-style home that blends into hillsides.
- Desert: Sandstone-themed architecture suitable for arid biomes.
- Snowy: A reinforced cabin designed for cold climates.
- Subaquatic: A glass-domed structure for underwater living.
- Modern: A sleek, minimalist design using concrete and glass.
- Camping: A simple tent-like setup with a campfire and basic utilities.
- Mountain: A home designed to be built directly into a cliffside, featuring a waterfall entrance.
Farming & Production Structures#
These structures automate or organize resource gathering:

- Produce Farm: A large, pre-tilled, and irrigated field protected by a fence. It includes a small shed for seed storage.
- Tree Farm: A grid-based layout optimized for growing various tree types without them interfering with one another.
- Horse Stable: A decorative and functional shelter for horses, donkeys, and mules.
- Barn: A massive multi-purpose structure for housing cows, sheep, and pigs, featuring hay storage and stalls.
- Greenhouse: A glass-enclosed garden that protects crops and provides a controlled environment for growth.
Utility & Defense Structures#
- Instant Bridge: A highly configurable tool that creates a bridge up to 75 blocks long. It can include a roof and torches for lighting.
- Mineshaft Entrance: Generates a safe, lit path down to the lower mining levels (Y=11 or Deepslate layers), complete with a small surface hut.
- Nether Gate: A massive, skull-shaped obsidian structure that houses a Nether Portal.
- Defense Bunker: A blast-resistant underground shelter designed to protect players from explosions and mob sieges.
- Watch Tower: A tall spire providing a 360-degree view of the surrounding area, equipped with a ladder and guard rails.
