Overview#
BetterNether is an expansive modification that completely reimagines the Nether dimension. Moving beyond the vanilla wastes, it introduces a volumetric biome system that allows for vertical diversity, meaning the ceiling of the Nether can host entirely different ecosystems than the floor. The mod adds a vast array of new building blocks, functional craft stations, and powerful equipment tiers, while maintaining compatibility with other major Nether-altering mods.
Key Features
- Volumetric Biomes: Over 20 new biomes that generate both horizontally and vertically.
- New Materials: Cincinnasite and Nether Ruby provide new progression tiers for tools and armor.
- Exotic Flora: Dozens of unique plants, trees, and fungi, many of which are farmable.
- Unique Mobs: Ambient and hostile creatures specifically designed for the new environments.
- Advanced Mechanics: Lava-faring boats, specialized forges, and fire-resistant equipment.
Biomes#
The Nether is divided into numerous distinct biomes, each with its own fog color, vegetation, and resources.
| Biome Name | Description | Key Resources |
|---|---|---|
| Nether Grasslands | Open plains covered in Nether Grass and Egg Plants. | Nether Grass, Egg Plants |
| Nether Jungle | Dense, humid forests with tall trees and hanging vines. | Willow Wood, Eye Vines |
| Wart Forest | Thick forests of giant wart trees and small bushes. | Wart Wood, Nether Moss |
| Mushroom Forest | A fungal paradise filled with giant mushrooms and spores. | Mushroom Fir, Various Fungi |
| Bone Reef | Desolate areas filled with massive bone structures and spikes. | Bone Blocks, Bone Grass |
| Gravel Desert | Arid regions dominated by gravel dunes and cacti. | Nether Cactus, Agave |
| Soul Plain | Eerie expanses of soul sand and soul soil. | Soul Lily, Soul Grass |
| Upside Down Forest | Unique forests that grow exclusively on the Nether ceiling. | Whispering Gourd, Neon Equisetum |
| Flooded Deltas | Low-lying areas where lava and water-like fluids meet. | Nether Reed, Mud |
| Magma Lands | Volcanic regions with high concentrations of magma blocks. | Magma Flower, Basalt |
Mobs#
BetterNether introduces several new entities that inhabit specific biomes.
Passive & Ambient Mobs
- Firefly: Small glowing insects found in grasslands. They drop Glowstone Dust and can be bred using the same material. They provide natural lighting in dark areas.
- Flying Pig: A winged variant of the pig found in wart forests. They drop Raw Porkchops and can be bred with Nether Warts. They are leashable but not ridable.
- Hydrogen Jellyfish: Large, floating creatures found in various biomes. They are passive but will explode if attacked or if they collide with the player. They do not drop items.
Hostile Mobs
- Naga: A serpent-like predator found in many biomes. It is fast and dangerous, with a rare chance to drop a Wither Skeleton Head when killed with Looting.
- Jungle Skeleton: A variant of the skeleton that spawns in Nether Jungles, often equipped with specialized gear.
- Skull: A floating, aggressive undead mob that attacks players on sight. Like the Naga, it has a small chance to drop Wither Skeleton Heads.
| Mob | Health | Behavior | Notable Drops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefly | 4 | Passive | Glowstone Dust |
| Flying Pig | 10 | Passive | Raw Porkchops |
| Naga | 30 | Hostile | Wither Skeleton Head (Rare) |
| Skull | 20 | Hostile | Bone, Wither Skeleton Head (Rare) |
| Hydrogen Jellyfish | 10 | Neutral/Explosive | None |
Materials & Resources#
New ores and wood types provide the foundation for the mod's advanced crafting.
Ores
- Cincinnasite: The most common new ore. Raw Cincinnasite can replace Iron Ingots in most vanilla recipes (tools, armor, buckets, etc.). It can be forged into decorative blocks and pillars.
- Nether Ruby: A rare and powerful gemstone. Ruby tools are highly durable and efficient.
- Nether Lapis & Redstone: Nether-specific variants of vanilla ores that drop Lapis Piles and Redstone Dust respectively.
Wood Types
BetterNether adds several "wood" variants derived from giant fungi and trees:
- Stalagnate: A lime-green wood found in caves.
- Willow: A dark, weeping wood from the Nether Jungle.
- Rubeus: A vibrant red wood.
- Nether Reed: Can be crafted into purple-hued planks.
- Wart Wood: Harvested from the giant trees in Wart Forests.
Crafting & Mechanics#
The mod introduces several functional blocks and unique survival mechanics.
Specialized Stations
- Cincinnasite Forge: A specialized furnace used for smelting Cincinnasite and other Nether materials. It is crafted using Forged Cincinnasite Blocks and Nether Bricks.
- Spinning Wheel: Used to process fibers into Fireproof Cloth, which is essential for crafting lava-resistant armor.
Unique Items
- Obsidian Boat: A heavy boat capable of traversing lava seas without burning. It sinks in water but is the primary mode of transportation across the Nether's lava lakes.
- Portal Compass: A specialized compass that points toward the nearest Nether Portal, preventing players from getting lost in the vast dimension.
- Nether Brewing Stand: A Cincinnasite-based brewing stand used for creating unique Nether potions.
Enchantments
- Ruby's Fire: A unique enchantment for Nether Ruby Pickaxes. When active, mining ores will automatically smelt them (e.g., Cincinnasite Ore drops Cincinnasite Ingots directly).
Food & Flora#
Survival in the Nether is made easier with new food sources found in the wild.
- Black Apple: A rare fruit found in the Nether. It provides high saturation and can be used to tame certain creatures.
- Wart Soup: Crafted using a Stalagnate Bowl and Nether Warts. It is a reliable early-game food source.
- Hook Mushroom: Can be harvested and cooked in a furnace to create a nutritious meal.
- Egg Plant: Found in grasslands; provides a small amount of hunger restoration.
Farming
Many plants can be farmed by collecting their seeds or spores. Most Nether plants require specific blocks to grow, such as Netherrack, Soul Sand, or Nether Mycelium. Hovering over a plant in the inventory will often reveal its required growth medium.
Structures#
Exploration is rewarded with various generated structures throughout the dimension.
- Nether Cities: Massive, rare fortresses built from Cincinnasite and Obsidian. They contain high-tier loot but are heavily guarded.
- Ghast Hives: Large organic structures hanging from the ceiling where Ghasts congregate.
- Jungle Temples: Hidden ruins within the Nether Jungles containing unique treasures.
- Altars & Pyramids: Smaller structures scattered across the plains and deserts, often housing spawners or loot chests.
