Overview#
Soot is a significant expansion for the Embers mod (specifically designed for the Rekindled version in 1.12.2). It aims to flesh out the existing mechanics of Embers while adding unique content that fits the aesthetic of dwarven engineering and magical alchemy. The mod introduces a new metal called Antimony, provides a more structured way to perform alchemy, and adds several quality-of-life improvements to existing Embers machinery.
Key features include the introduction of the Alchemical Mixer, the Hearth Coil upgrades, and the addition of the Sulfur and Antimony resource chains. It also modifies how some Embers mechanics function to provide a more balanced and integrated experience.
Materials and Resources#
Soot introduces several new materials that are essential for its advanced machinery and recipes.
Antimony
Antimony is the primary new metal introduced by Soot. It is not found as a natural ore but must be produced through a specific smelting process involving Lead and Sulfur.
| Material | Acquisition Method | Uses |
|---|---|---|
| Sulfur | Dropped by certain mobs or found in chests | Used in the production of Antimony and Alchemical recipes |
| Antimony Ore | Created via Alchemical Mixer | Smelted into Antimony Ingots |
| Antimony Ingot | Smelted from Antimony Ore | Used for advanced Soot machinery and tools |
| Antimony Block | Crafted from 9 Antimony Ingots | Decorative and compact storage |
Sulfur
Sulfur is a critical reagent in Soot. It can be obtained by crushing certain materials or as a drop from mobs. It is primarily used to convert Lead into Antimony within a furnace or specialized heater.
Blocks#
Soot adds several blocks that interact with Ember energy and provide new processing capabilities.
Alchemical Mixer
The Alchemical Mixer is a multi-block structure used to combine fluids and items using Ember power. It is the core of Soot's advanced material production.
- Function: Mixes two different fluids and an item reagent to produce a new fluid or item.
- Input: Requires Ember energy (via an Ember Receiver) and fluid inputs (via pipes).
Hearth Coil Upgrades
Soot allows the Hearth Coil to be upgraded using different materials placed underneath or around it to increase its efficiency or speed.
Decorative Blocks
- Ember Stone: A decorative stone variant that matches the Embers aesthetic.
- Antimony Block: A shiny, metallic block used for construction or beacon bases.
Items#
The mod adds various tools and utility items to assist in the management of Ember systems.
Tools
- Antimony Tools: A tier of tools equivalent to Iron but with higher enchantability and specific interactions with Ember energy.
- Ember Funnel: Used to direct the flow of Ember more precisely between containers.
Components
- Antimony Gear: Used in the construction of advanced Soot machinery.
- Sulfur Clump: The raw form of sulfur used in chemical reactions.
Mechanics#
Soot modifies and expands upon several core Embers mechanics to provide a deeper gameplay experience.
Improved Alchemy
In base Embers, alchemy can be somewhat unpredictable. Soot introduces the Alchemical Mixer, which provides a more deterministic way to handle high-level transmutations. By using specific ratios of fluids and Ember, players can create rare materials without the high failure rate of the standard Exchange Tablet.
Heat Management
Soot introduces new ways to manage heat in the Hearth Coil. By placing certain blocks like Copper or Dawnstone beneath the coil, the rate at which items are smelted can be significantly increased, though this often comes at the cost of higher Ember consumption.
Golem Logic
Soot adds improvements to the way Embers' Golems behave, allowing for better automation of resource gathering and transport within a workshop. This includes better pathfinding and the ability to interact with Soot-specific containers.
Recipes#
Most Soot recipes are integrated into the Embers' Codex. However, the primary new recipes involve the production of Antimony.
| Input 1 | Input 2 | Output | Machine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lead Ingot | Sulfur | Antimony Ingot | Furnace / Heater |
| Molten Lead | Sulfur | Molten Antimony | Alchemical Mixer |
| Molten Copper | Molten Silver | Molten Dawnstone | Alchemical Mixer |
Crafting Antimony
To create Antimony, you must combine Lead and Sulfur. In the early game, this is done by smelting Lead Ingots with Sulfur in a standard furnace. In the late game, the Alchemical Mixer can be used to mass-produce Molten Antimony for casting.
Configuration#
Soot provides a configuration file (soot.cfg) that allows players and server owners to tweak the mod's balance.
- Enable/Disable Features: Individual blocks and items can be toggled.
- Alchemy Values: The Ember cost and fluid ratios for the Alchemical Mixer can be adjusted.
- Ore Generation: While Soot doesn't add many ores, it allows for the adjustment of Sulfur drop rates from mobs and chests.
- Hearth Coil Multipliers: The efficiency bonuses provided by different blocks under the Hearth Coil can be customized.
