Overview#
MrCrayfish's Backpacked Mod is a vanilla-friendly storage solution that adds a functional and highly customizable backpack to Minecraft. Unlike other storage mods, Backpacked focuses on progression and immersion, requiring players to complete specific in-game challenges to unlock new cosmetic models.
Key features include a dedicated inventory slot, pickpocketing mechanics for multiplayer, and a robust 'Keep on Death' system that ensures your most valuable tools remain with you even after an unfortunate demise. The mod is designed to feel like a natural extension of the base game, utilizing polished GUIs and models that match the Minecraft aesthetic.

The mod adds several items and blocks to facilitate storage, display, and automation.

Mechanics#
Equipping and Storage
To use a backpack, it must be placed in the dedicated backpack slot in your inventory. Once equipped, the default keybind to open the backpack is 'B'. By default, the backpack provides 9 slots of storage, but this can be expanded via configuration or by using Unlock Tokens.
Keep Items on Death
One of the most significant features of this mod is the death mechanic. By default, the backpack and all items contained within it are preserved upon death. When you respawn, the backpack will still be equipped in its slot with all items intact. This behavior can be toggled in the server configuration if a more hardcore experience is desired.
Pickpocketing
In multiplayer, players can access each other's backpacks through the pickpocketing mechanic. To do this, you must sneak directly behind another player and right-click their backpack.
- Wandering Traders: There is a 2% chance for a Wandering Trader to spawn with a backpack. Players can pickpocket them for rare loot, but doing so will cause the trader to refuse future trades.
Augments (Enchantments)
Backpacks can be upgraded with Augments, which provide passive abilities:
- Funnelling: Automatically moves picked-up items into the backpack.
- Repairman: Uses experience orbs to repair items with Mending inside the backpack.
- Lootbound: Pulls nearby item drops directly into the backpack.
- Imbued Hide: Makes the backpack fireproof and immune to lava damage.
- Immortal: Automatically consumes Totems of Undying from the backpack upon death.
- Lightweaver: Places torches from the backpack when light levels are low.
- Quiverlink: Allows bows and crossbows to pull ammo directly from the backpack.
Challenges & Customization#
Backpacked features a unique progression system where cosmetic models are unlocked by completing specific tasks. Access the customization menu by clicking the Palette Icon in the backpack GUI.

Addons & Integration#
The mod is highly extensible and supports several community-made addons that introduce even more variety:
- Wet Backpacks: Adds themed backpacks with unique unlock challenges.
- World of Colours: Introduces dyeable variants of the Standard Backpack, allowing for 16 different color options.
- Shells: Adds nautical-themed shell backpacks.
- Furniture Mod Integration: When installed alongside MrCrayfish's Furniture Mod: Refurbished, an exclusive Storage Cabinet backpack model becomes available.
Developers can also create their own backpacks using data packs and resource packs, defining custom models and unlock requirements via JSON files.

The mod offers extensive configuration options, typically managed through the backpacked-server.toml and backpacked-client.toml files.
