Overview#
Deadly World is designed to increase the difficulty of exploration by turning the natural world—particularly caves and underground structures—into a series of lethal challenges. Unlike mods that simply add stronger mobs, Deadly World focuses on environmental hazards and traps that catch players off guard. It introduces new mechanics like wall-mounted pressure plates and hidden dispensers, ensuring that even a well-armored player must remain vigilant while mining.
The mod is highly compatible with other world-generation mods and is fully configurable, allowing players to adjust the frequency and lethality of every trap type. In versions 1.12.2 and 1.20.1, it serves as a spiritual successor to classic challenge mods, making the subterranean experience feel like a deliberate, dangerous dungeon crawl.
Traps and Hazards#
The core of the mod consists of various traps that generate naturally in the world. These traps are often hidden behind blocks or integrated into the cave walls.
Trap Types
| Trap Type | Description | Common Triggers |
|---|---|---|
| Arrow Trap | A hidden dispenser loaded with arrows. Fires a volley when triggered. | Wall or Floor Pressure Plates |
| Potion Trap | Fires splash potions of negative effects (Poison, Slowness, Harming, or Weakness). | Wall or Floor Pressure Plates |
| Landmine | An explosive block (TNT) hidden beneath a pressure plate. | Floor Pressure Plates |
| Fire Trap | Ignites the player or the surrounding area using hidden fire sources or flint-and-steel mechanisms. | Proximity or Plates |
| Lava Trap | Pockets of lava hidden behind single layers of stone that spill out when a block is broken or a piston is retracted. | Block Updates |
| Spawner Trap | Disguised spawners that activate when a player enters a specific radius, often spawning swarms of mobs. | Proximity |
| Falling Block Trap | Structures of sand or gravel held up by torches or signs that collapse when a support block is disturbed. | Block Updates |
| Chest Trap | Naturally generating chests that are rigged with explosives or poison dispensers. | Opening the Chest |
| Water Trap | Sudden flooding mechanisms designed to drown players in tight corridors. | Pressure Plates |
New Blocks#
Deadly World adds several functional blocks that facilitate its trap mechanics. These can also be used by players in their own builds.
Wall Pressure Plates
The most iconic addition of the mod, these function exactly like standard pressure plates but are mounted on the sides of blocks. They are triggered by players, mobs, and sometimes items.
- Stone Wall Pressure Plate: Requires a player or mob to step against the wall.
- Wooden Wall Pressure Plate: Can be triggered by players, mobs, or projectiles (arrows).
- Gold/Iron Wall Pressure Plates: Function as weighted pressure plates, outputting signal strength based on the number of entities touching the wall.
Hidden Spawners
These blocks look identical to natural Stone, Dirt, Gravel, or Sand but contain a mob spawner inside. They do not emit the standard fire particles of a vanilla spawner until they are active, making them extremely difficult to detect without careful observation.

Infested Stone
While vanilla Minecraft includes Silverfish-infested stone (Monster Eggs) primarily in Strongholds, Deadly World significantly increases their frequency in the general world. They generate in veins similar to coal or iron, leading to unexpected swarms while mining.

Mob Spawner Variants#
The mod modifies how spawners generate, often placing them in "deadly" configurations. These spawners are not limited to dungeons and can be found embedded in cave floors or ceilings.
| Mob Type | Spawner Behavior |
|---|---|
| Zombies | Often found in groups of 2-3 spawners to create overwhelming hordes. |
| Skeletons | Placed in high positions to allow them to fire down on players. |
| Spiders | Frequently paired with cobweb-generating hazards. |
| Silverfish | Hidden in the floor to trigger when a player stands still to mine. |
| Cave Spiders | Found in cramped tunnels, often near Potion Traps. |

World Generation#
Deadly World features are injected into the world during the decoration phase of chunk generation.
- Density: The number of traps per chunk can be adjusted. By default, caves will feel significantly more dangerous than vanilla, with a trap appearing roughly every 50-100 blocks of cave length.
- Vertical Distribution: Traps generate at all Y-levels where air pockets (caves) exist. In 1.20.1, this includes the Deepslate layers, where traps may use reinforced materials.
- Biome Specifics: While most traps are universal, certain hazards like Lava Traps are more frequent in hotter biomes or near the bottom of the world.
Crafting Recipes#
Most items in Deadly World are intended for world generation, but Wall Pressure Plates are craftable for player use.
| Result | Ingredients | Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden Wall Pressure Plate | 2x Any Planks | Vertical Column (2 blocks) |
| Stone Wall Pressure Plate | 2x Stone | Vertical Column (2 blocks) |
| Iron Wall Pressure Plate | 2x Iron Ingots | Vertical Column (2 blocks) |
| Gold Wall Pressure Plate | 2x Gold Ingots | Vertical Column (2 blocks) |
Note: In some versions, placing a standard pressure plate in a crafting grid will convert it into its Wall variant.
Mechanics and Logic#
Detection
Traps can be detected by observant players. Look for:
- Wall Pressure Plates: Small protrusions on cave walls that match the stone texture.
- Dispensers: Small circular holes in the wall (often hidden behind a 'false' block that the mod removes when the trap is triggered).
- Redstone Dust: Occasionally, redstone trails may be visible if a trap is partially exposed by a ravine or cave intersection.
Disarming
Traps can be disarmed by breaking the trigger (pressure plate) or the payload (dispenser/TNT). Using a bucket of water can often clear out floor-based pressure plates and torches holding up falling block traps safely from a distance.
Configuration#
The mod provides an extensive configuration file (deadlyworld-common.toml or DeadlyWorld.cfg).
- Global Toggle: Enable or disable the entire mod's generation.
- Feature Control: Every trap type (Arrows, Potions, etc.) has its own frequency setting (0.0 to 1.0).
- Spawner Settings: Customize which mobs can appear in hidden spawners and their spawn rates.
- Dimension Whitelist: Restrict traps to the Overworld or allow them in the Nether and End.
- Loot Tables: Modify the contents of trapped chests found in the world.
