Overview#
Ability Stones (specifically version 2.x.x for Minecraft, and 1.12) adds a progression-based magic system centered around infused gemstones. Unlike traditional potions which are single-use and time-limited upon consumption, Ability Stones can be toggled on and off at will, only consuming their internal 'charge' or 'timer' while active. This allows players to precisely manage their buffs, such as using a Strength stone only during combat or a Night Vision stone only when entering a cave.

Getting Started#
The journey into magical infusion begins underground. To start crafting stones, you must first acquire Magical Dust.
Magical Dust
Magical Dust is the primary fuel and component for all infusions. In the 2.x.x versions of the mod, this dust is found as an ore naturally generating in the world. It is most commonly found at deep levels, specifically between Y-layers 0 and 30. Mining this ore drops several pieces of Magical Dust, which are required to power the Infuser blocks.
Mundane Stone
Before a stone can hold an ability, it must be crafted into a Mundane Stone (formerly known as the 'Boring Stone' in older versions). This serves as the blank canvas for all future infusions. It is typically crafted by surrounding a standard piece of Stone with Cobblestone in a crafting table.
Blocks#
The mod adds two primary functional blocks used to imbue stones with magical properties.
Basic Ability Infuser
The Basic Ability Infuser is the entry-level workstation. It is used to create Tier 1 stones that provide standard vanilla potion effects. Every infusion performed in this block costs 6 Magical Dust.
Advanced Ability Infuser
The Advanced Ability Infuser is the upgraded version of the workstation. It is required to create Adept Ability Stones. This block allows for more complex infusions, including stones that provide unique non-potion abilities and the ability to combine multiple effects onto a single stone.

Ability Stones#
Stones are divided into two tiers: Basic and Adept.
Basic Ability Stones
Basic stones typically last for 3 active minutes (default configuration) and provide a single Level II potion effect. To craft one, place a Mundane Stone, 6 Magical Dust, and the required Potion (usually the Level II variant) into a Basic Ability Infuser.
| Stone Name | Effect Provided | Required Ingredient |
|---|---|---|
| Swiftness Stone | Speed II | Potion of Swiftness II |
| Haste Stone | Haste II | Potion of Haste II (if available) |
| Strength Stone | Strength II | Potion of Strength II |
| Leap Stone | Jump Boost II | Potion of Leaping II |
| Regeneration Stone | Regeneration II | Potion of Regeneration II |
| Resistance Stone | Resistance II | Potion of Resistance II |
| Fire Resistance Stone | Fire Resistance | Potion of Fire Resistance |
| Water Breathing Stone | Water Breathing | Potion of Water Breathing |
| Invisibility Stone | Invisibility | Potion of Invisibility |
| Night Vision Stone | Night Vision | Potion of Night Vision |
| Health Boost Stone | Health Boost II | Potion of Health Boost II |
| Absorption Stone | Absorption II | Potion of Absorption II |
| Saturation Stone | Saturation | Potion of Saturation |
| Luck Stone | Luck | Potion of Luck |
Adept Ability Stones
Adept stones are the pinnacle of the mod. They offer unique utilities and can be customized in the Advanced Ability Infuser.
- Flight Stone: Grants the player creative-style flight while active. Requires a Nether Star or similar high-tier catalyst.
- Repair Stone: Automatically repairs the durability of items held in the player's hand or worn as armor over time. Requires an Anvil or Iron Block catalyst.
- Multi-Ability Stones: Using the Advanced Infuser, players can combine up to 4 different abilities onto a single Adept Stone. The cost in Magical Dust increases significantly with each added ability.
Mechanics#
Toggling and Usage
To use an Ability Stone, place it in your hotbar and Right-Click to toggle it on. A stone that is active will glow (enchantment glint) and begin providing its effect immediately. Right-clicking again will toggle it off.
The Timer System
Every stone has an internal timer displayed in its tooltip (e.g., "Time Remaining: 2:45"). This timer only decreases while the stone is active. If you have a Speed stone active for 10 seconds to cross a field and then turn it off, you only lose 10 seconds of its total 3-minute duration.
Recharging
In the Advanced Ability Infuser, stones can have their use time increased or replenished by infusing them with additional Magical Dust and the base ingredients.
Configuration#
The mod includes a configuration file located at /config/abilstones.cfg. Server administrators and players can modify several key aspects of the mod:
- Stone Duration: The default 3-minute (180 seconds) timer for basic stones can be increased or decreased.
- Saturation Rate: The speed at which the Saturation Stone replenishes hunger (defaulted to half a hunger shank every 3 seconds).
- Ore Generation: The rarity and vein size of Magical Dust ore can be adjusted to balance the mod for different modpacks.
