Overview#

The Backpacks Mod introduces a range of portable storage solutions to the game, significantly improving inventory management. Players can craft various types of backpacks, each offering different storage capacities and unique functionalities. These backpacks can be carried in the player's inventory or equipped to a dedicated backpack slot, allowing for quick access and visual display on the player's back.

Key features include multiple storage sizes, dyeable options, and specialized backpacks like the Ender Backpack. The mod emphasizes convenience, allowing players to access their stored items on the go and offering mechanics for item transfer and auto-pickup.

Items#

The mod adds several distinct backpack types and associated crafting resources:

Backpack

A basic portable storage unit, offering 27 inventory slots, equivalent to a standard chest. It can be dyed various colors and upgraded to a larger size.

Big Backpack

An enhanced version of the standard Backpack, providing 54 inventory slots, equivalent to a double chest. It is crafted by upgrading a regular Backpack.

Colored Backpacks

Backpacks can be crafted in 16 different colors by incorporating dyes into their crafting process. Existing backpacks can also be recolored.

Ender Backpack

This specialized backpack functions as a portable Ender Chest, sharing its inventory with any other Ender Chests in the game. It cannot be upgraded to a Big Backpack.

Workbench Backpack

A portable crafting station combined with storage.

Big Workbench Backpack

A larger version of the Workbench Backpack, offering more storage alongside its crafting capabilities.

Resources#

The crafting of backpacks relies on two primary intermediate resources:

Bound Leather

An essential component for crafting Tanned Leather, which is used in upgrading backpacks. It is crafted from regular leather.

Tanned Leather

Produced by smelting Bound Leather in a furnace. Tanned Leather is crucial for upgrading standard Backpacks into Big Backpacks.

Mechanics#

The Backpacks Mod introduces several mechanics for interacting with backpacks:

  • Opening Inventory: To access a backpack's inventory, hold it in your hand and right-click.
  • Equipping and Access: Backpacks can be placed in a dedicated backpack slot, often accessed by pressing Shift + B (default keybind). Once equipped, the backpack will be visible on the player's back and can be opened quickly by pressing the B key (default keybind). Keybinds can be customized in the game's controls.
  • Item Transfer: Players can transfer items directly from an equipped backpack into a nearby chest by performing a Shift + Right-click action on the chest.
  • Auto-Pickup: Backpacks can be configured to automatically pick up up to nine specific item drops, streamlining collection.
  • Renaming: Backpacks can be renamed by performing a Sneak + Right-click action while holding the backpack. A GUI will appear, allowing the player to enter a new name.
  • Placing on Ground: Backpacks can be placed on the ground as a block by performing a Sneak + Use action on a block.
  • Death Consequences: In some versions of the mod, an equipped backpack may be destroyed upon the player's death.
  • Crafted Requirement: Backpacks must be legitimately crafted to function correctly. Backpacks spawned or cheated into the inventory without going through the crafting process may not open or determine their inventory size, leading to issues.
