Overview#

BetterStorage is a storage-focused mod that adds fun, creative, balanced, and original features designed to fit well into vanilla Minecraft. Rather than simply increasing chest sizes, it introduces several distinct storage systems, each with its own behavior and trade-offs.

The mod's additions include networked storage crates that pool their contents, stackable lockers, explosion-proof reinforced chests, wearable backpacks, lockable containers secured with keys, and a variety of supporting items. The result is a flexible set of storage options that reward thoughtful base layout while staying close to vanilla balance.

Blocks and Items#

Better Storage adds a collection of storage blocks and related items:

  • Storage Crates - Modular containers that link together into a shared storage network.
  • Lockers - Chest-like containers that stack vertically.
  • Reinforced Chests - Highly durable, explosion-resistant chests with extra capacity.
  • Backpacks - Wearable storage carried on the player.
  • Armor Stands - Stands for displaying and storing armor.
  • Locks and Keys - A security system for locking containers.
  • Cardboard - A cheap crafting material used in the mod.
  • Drinking Helmets - A novelty wearable item.

Storage Crates#

Storage Crates are the mod's signature feature. Each crate provides 18 slots, but crates placed next to one another merge into a single shared inventory network, pooling all of their slots together. This lets you expand storage simply by adding more crates to the cluster.

When you open a crate, the contents are shown as a randomized selection rather than a fixed, organized grid - you see a viewing window of up to double-chest capacity into the larger shared pool. A status bar indicates how full the entire crate network is. Because the network tracks contents as a pool, you can shift-click items into a crate to insert them even when no empty slot is visibly shown, as long as the network still has room.

Lockers#

Lockers function much like standard chests, but with a key difference in how they combine. Where vanilla chests pair up horizontally to form a double chest, lockers stack vertically: placing one locker above another creates a double locker.

This vertical stacking makes lockers a good fit for narrow spaces and tall storage walls, allowing you to build columns of connected storage where floor space is limited.

Reinforced Chests#

Reinforced Chests are heavy-duty containers that improve on the standard chest in both capacity and durability. They provide 12 additional slots beyond a normal chest's capacity.

Their standout property is blast resistance: reinforced chests are highly explosion-resistant, comparable to obsidian, and are immune to damage from creepers, meteorites, and other explosions, protecting their contents from blasts. Reinforced chests can be crafted with different material finishes such as diamond, emerald, gold, and copper. These materials change only the chest's appearance - they are purely aesthetic and do not affect its capacity or durability.
