Seasons Wiki

How the Seasons mod cycles Minecraft through spring, summer, fall and winter, changing foliage colours, weather, crop growth and more, and how to configure it.

Overview#

Seasons adds a continuous four-season cycle to Minecraft. As time passes, the world moves through spring, summer, fall and winter, and each season changes how the world looks and behaves.

The most visible effect is colour: grass, leaves and other foliage shift from fresh spring green, to deep summer green, to warm autumn yellows and browns, to a pale, frosty winter tone. Seasons also change biome temperatures, crop growth and the way ice and snow form and melt, so the passing of the year genuinely affects gameplay rather than being only a visual theme.

The Four Seasons#

The year is divided into four seasons that always follow the same order and then loop:

Season Feel Foliage colour
Spring Mild, things start growing again Fresh, light green
Summer Warm and lush Deep, vivid green
Fall Cooling down Yellow, orange and brown
Winter Cold, snow and ice Pale, desaturated, frosty

The current season is worked out from the world's time, so seasons advance on their own as the days go by. Each season lasts for a configurable number of in-game days before the next one begins.

Seasonal Colours#

The headline feature is seasonal recolouring of the world. Grass blocks, leaves and other foliage are tinted according to the current season, so the same forest looks completely different across the year.

  • Spring brings back a fresh, light green.
  • Summer deepens everything into a rich green.
  • Fall turns leaves and grass into warm yellows, oranges and browns.
  • Winter drains the colour to a pale, cold, frosty tone.

The recolouring blends the season on top of each biome's normal colours, so warm and cold biomes still look different from one another while all following the same seasonal shift.

Weather and Temperature#

Each season shifts the effective temperature of the biomes around you.

  • In colder seasons, warm biomes can cool down enough to see rain turn to snow, and snow layers begin to build up.
  • In warmer seasons, temperatures rise again, snow and ice melt, and rain returns to normal.

This means a biome that never normally sees snow can pick up a light dusting in the depth of winter, and frozen areas can thaw as summer approaches.

Crops and Farming#

Seasons affects how quickly crops grow, so farming follows the rhythm of the year.

  • Crops generally grow best in the warmer, brighter seasons.
  • Growth slows in colder seasons, and some plants struggle in the harshest conditions of winter.

Planning your planting and harvesting around the seasons becomes part of running an efficient farm. If you want reliable year-round growth, sheltered or artificially controlled farms are the most dependable.

Ice and Snow#

Because seasons change temperature, ice and snow are no longer permanent fixtures of only the coldest biomes.

  • As winter sets in, water can freeze and snow layers can form in places that are normally too warm.
  • As the seasons warm again, that seasonal ice and snow melt away.

The result is a world that visibly freezes and thaws over the course of the year instead of staying the same all the time.

Season Command#

A /season command lets you check and control the season directly.

Command What it does
/season query Tells you the current season
/season set <season> Sets the season immediately (spring, summer, fall or winter)
/season skip [season] Skips ahead to the next season, or to a chosen season

These commands are useful for testing, for screenshots, or for building an adventure map that stays in a particular season.

Configuration#

A configuration file is created automatically the first time the mod runs, and it lets you tailor how seasons behave.

Option What it controls
Season length How many in-game days each season lasts
Starting season Which season a new world begins in
Locked season Freezes the world in a single chosen season and stops the cycle
Valid dimensions Which dimensions seasons apply to
Crop and weather effects Whether the gameplay effects such as crop speed and freezing are active

Edit the values, then reload the world to apply your changes.

Tips#

  • Watch a forest across a full year to see the foliage move through all four seasonal colours.
  • Lock the season if you want a permanent autumn or winter look for a build or a screenshot.
  • Prepare food and supplies before winter, when crops grow slowly and snow can spread.
  • Use the /season set command to preview how a build looks in each season before committing to a locked season.
  • Longer season lengths make the change feel gradual and natural; shorter ones make the world cycle quickly.
