Overview#

Defiled Lands is a comprehensive expansion mod that introduces a spreading corruption mechanic known as "Defilement." This corruption transforms the overworld into a dark, purple-hued wasteland filled with dangerous plants and mutated creatures. Players must navigate these treacherous biomes to gather unique resources like Umbrium and Scarlite, eventually summoning and defeating the mod's central boss, The Mourner.

The mod focuses on a progression system tied to the corruption itself. As the land defiles, new blocks and items become available, allowing for the creation of powerful equipment that surpasses standard vanilla tiers.

Biomes#

Defiled Lands adds five distinct biomes, each a corrupted reflection of standard Minecraft biomes. These areas are characterized by purple soil, dark flora, and a constant sense of dread.

Biome Name Description Unique Features
Defiled Forest A dense forest with purple-leaved trees and thick undergrowth. High concentration of Vilespine and Blastem plants.
Defiled Plains Open, rolling hills of defiled grass. Primary spawning ground for Shamblers.
Defiled Desert A wasteland of purple sand and sandstone. Home to Scuttlers; contains Defiled Quicksand.
Defiled Hills Elevated, mountainous terrain made of defiled stone. High concentration of Umbrium and Scarlite ores.
Defiled Ice Plains A frozen, corrupted tundra. Features defiled ice and snow; extremely hostile.

Biome Mechanics

Defiled biomes have a unique property where they can spread to adjacent non-defiled blocks. This process is slow but persistent, turning Dirt into Defiled Soil, Grass into Defiled Grass, and Stone into Defiled Stone.

Mobs#

The creatures inhabiting the Defiled Lands are mutated versions of common entities or entirely new horrors. They are generally stronger and more aggressive than vanilla mobs.

Mob Health Damage Drops Behavior
Shambler 20 3 Defiled Soul, Rotten Flesh A zombie-like creature that moves slowly but hits hard.
Twisted Shambler 40 6 Defiled Soul, Bone A larger, more powerful variant of the Shambler with increased reach.
Scuttler 16 2 Scuttler Eye, String A spider-like creature that can climb walls and inflict slowness.
Host 20 4 Host Shell A parasitic entity that can infect other mobs, making them stronger.
Slime Knight 20 5 Slime Ball, Defiled Soul An armored slime that retains its armor even when split into smaller sizes.

Bosses: The Mourner#

The Mourner is the primary boss of the Defiled Lands. It is a large, flying skeletal entity that guards the heart of the corruption.

Summoning

To summon The Mourner, players must find a Defiled Altar (naturally occurring in Defiled biomes) and place a Golden Idol on it. This will trigger the boss fight immediately.

Combat Phases

  • Phase 1 (Flying): The Mourner flies above the player, firing projectiles and summoning smaller minions. It is highly resistant to melee attacks in this phase.
  • Phase 2 (Grounded): Once its health drops below 50%, The Mourner descends to the ground, becoming much faster and using powerful melee sweeps.

Stats & Drops

  • Health: 300
  • Armor: 10
  • Primary Drop: Black Heart (Used for high-tier crafting).
  • Secondary Drop: Mourner Trophy (Decorative).

Blocks#

The environment is composed of several unique blocks that provide the foundation for the mod's progression.

Natural Blocks

  • Defiled Soil/Grass: The basic ground blocks. They spread corruption to nearby dirt/grass.
  • Defiled Stone: Found underground; can be smelted into Defiled Stone Bricks.
  • Defiled Sand/Gravel: Corrupted versions of their vanilla counterparts.

Ores

  • Umbrium Ore: Found at Iron levels. Drops Umbrium Clusters which are smelted into Umbrium Ingots.
  • Scarlite Ore: Found deep underground (Y < 16). Drops Scarlite Gems.

Plants

  • Vilespine: A cactus-like plant that grows on defiled grass. It deals damage to anything touching it and can be harvested for Vilespine needles.
  • Blastem: A volatile plant that explodes when broken or stepped on. It yields Blastem Fruit.
  • Scurvy Fungus: A purple mushroom used in food recipes and for creating Defiled Souls.

Items & Equipment#

Defiled Lands provides several tiers of equipment, each with unique properties.

Materials

  • Umbrium Ingot: Mid-tier metal, slightly better than Iron.
  • Scarlite Gem: High-tier gem, equivalent to Diamond but with higher enchantability.
  • Defiled Soul: Obtained from Shamblers; used in many advanced recipes.
  • Black Heart: Dropped by The Mourner; used for end-game gear.

Tool & Armor Tiers

Tier Durability Efficiency Special Property
Umbrium 400 6.0 Increased damage against non-defiled mobs.
Scarlite 1000 7.0 High enchantability; armor provides resistance.
Ravaging 1500 9.0 Tools deal more damage as the target's health decreases.
Sorrow 2000 10.0 Extremely high durability and speed.

Special Items

  • Healer: A block that, when fueled with Pellets, slowly purifies the surrounding area, turning defiled blocks back into their vanilla versions.
  • Book of Wyrms: A guide book (if Patchouli is installed) that tracks the player's discovery of the Defiled Lands.
  • Golden Idol: Used to summon The Mourner.

Mechanics#

Defilement Spread

The corruption spreads via a "random tick" system. If a Defiled Grass block is adjacent to a standard Grass block, there is a chance the standard block will convert. This can be stopped by using a Healer or by creating a 3-block wide trench of non-corruptible blocks (like Wood or Glass).

The Healer

The Healer is the only way to reclaim land. It requires Purifying Pellets (crafted from Gold and Glowstone) to operate. Once active, it will pulse every few seconds, converting one defiled block within an 8-block radius back to its original state.

Defiled Soul Processing

Defiled Souls are the "energy" of the mod. They can be combined with various items in a crafting table to "corrupt" them, such as turning a Golden Apple into a Defiled Apple, which provides stronger but more chaotic buffs.

Recipes#

While most recipes follow standard Minecraft patterns (e.g., pickaxes, swords), some unique recipes are essential for progression.

  • Umbrium Ingot: Smelt Umbrium Ore or Umbrium Clusters.
  • Golden Idol: 4x Gold Ingots + 1x Defiled Soul.
  • Purifying Pellet: 1x Gold Nugget + 1x Glowstone Dust.
  • Vilespine Arrow: 1x Vilespine + 1x Stick + 1x Feather.
  • Scurvy Stew: 1x Scurvy Fungus + 1x Bowl + 1x Brown Mushroom.
