Overview#
Epicurean Gastronomy (also known as EpiGast) is designed to transform the Minecraft hunger system from a chore into a rewarding gameplay mechanic. Inspired by Epicurean philosophy, the mod focuses on the enjoyment of food through complex recipes and beneficial status effects. It introduces three new crops—Tomatoes, Peppers, and Onions—and a specialized Cooking Table where players can assemble meals with both required and optional ingredients to maximize nutritional value.
Key features include automated crop harvesting via hoppers, the ability to eat items like cake and glistering melons for unique benefits, and a 'Dressing' system that allows players to further enhance finished meals with seasonings like Jelly and Butter.
Blocks#
Cooking Table
The Cooking Table is the central workstation of the mod. Unlike a standard crafting table, it features a specialized interface divided into Ingredients and Seasonings sections. It is used to assemble all complex meals and apply dressings to finished products.
| Block | Function | Crafting Recipe |
|---|---|---|
| Cooking Table | Used to craft meals and apply dressings. | 4x Any Planks, 2x Iron Ingots, 1x Crafting Table |
Crops and Farming#
The mod adds three primary crops that can be found growing naturally in the world or obtained by breaking tall grass for seeds.
- Onions: Used in savory stews, burgers, and Pad Thai.
- Tomatoes: Essential for spaghetti and stews.
- Peppers: Used to add spice to Ramen and Pad Thai.
Farming Mechanics
- Hopper Harvesting: Hoppers can be configured to automatically harvest crops. To use this, place a hopper directly beneath the block the crop is growing on (e.g., under the farmland for wheat/onions, or under the log for cocoa beans).
- Nether Wart: Nether wart can now be grown instantly using Bone Meal, similar to overworld crops.
Items and Ingredients#
Beyond crops, several processed ingredients are required for advanced recipes.
Base Ingredients
| Item | Crafting Method | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Dashi | Dried Kelp + Water Bucket + Cooked Cod | Required for Ramen. |
| Butter | Milk Bucket (returns empty bucket) | Optional ingredient for stews and pancakes. |
| Jelly | Sweet Berries | Restores hunger; used as a dressing. |
| Super Jelly | Jelly + Glistering Melon Slice | Provides a temporary Jump Boost when eaten or applied. |
| Noodles | 3x Wheat (+ optional Egg) | Base for Ramen, Spaghetti, and Pad Thai. |
Special Consumables
- Glistering Melons: Can be eaten directly to instantly recover one heart of health.
- Cake: Can be eaten directly from the hand/inventory without being placed on the ground.
- Iron/Gold Nuggets: Edible items that provide minor hunger restoration (configurable).
- TNT: Can be eaten for a "special surprise" (typically a small explosion or status effect).
Meal Recipes#
Meals are crafted at the Cooking Table. Every meal has Required ingredients and Optional ingredients. Adding optional ingredients increases the total hunger and saturation restored by the meal.

Mechanics#
The Dressing System
After a meal is crafted, it can be further enhanced using the Dressing system.
- Place the finished meal into the Ingredients section of the Cooking Table.
- Place a Dressing (such as Jelly, Super Jelly, or Butter) into the Seasonings section.
- The dressing will be applied to the meal, adding its specific benefits (e.g., Jump Boost from Super Jelly) to the final food item.
Configuration Options
Epicurean Gastronomy includes several toggleable mechanics for server administrators and players:
- Omnivore Mode: If enabled, almost any block or item in the game becomes edible, with hunger values based on the item's properties.
- RPG Hunger: An option to disable the standard hunger bar, using saturation exclusively for health restoration.
- Edible Metals: Toggle whether players can consume iron and gold nuggets.
