Fishing Mechanics & Bait#

The mod enhances the vanilla fishing experience by introducing specific baits that increase the weight of certain fish in the loot table.

Bait Types

  • Earthworms: Used to catch Plentifins, Wildsplashes, and Wreckers. Found by digging Grass or Dirt.
  • Grubs: Used to catch Devilfish and Battlegills. Found by digging Sand.
  • Leeches: Used to catch Ancientscales and Stormfish. Found by digging near shorelines.

How to Use Bait

To use bait, hold the bait item in your off-hand while casting your Fishing Rod. The bait will be consumed upon a successful catch. Using the correct bait increases the Lure speed by 10% and significantly boosts the chance of catching the associated fish species.

Fish Shoals

Shoals are a new entity that appears in Rivers, Beaches, and Oceans. They contain a group of fish that can be caught more easily. Removing water or placing solid blocks in a shoal will cause it to disappear.

Items & Food#

Food Items

All fish can be eaten raw (restores low hunger and may cause Nausea) or cooked in a Furnace, Smoker, or Campfire.

  • Fruits: Mangoes, Bananas, Pineapples, and Pomegranates can be harvested from their respective trees/plants. They provide varying levels of hunger and saturation.
  • Guardian Fruit: A rare fruit that provides unique status effects.

Utility Items

  • Fish Bucket: Created by using a Water Bucket on any modded fish. Allows for transport and relocation.
  • Treasured Fish Map: Purchased from high-level Fisherman Villagers. Leads the player to a guaranteed 'Treasured' fish shoal.
  • Fish Bone: Dropped by fish; can be crafted into Bone Meal or used to create Fish Bone Blocks.

  • Shipwrecks: Essential for finding Wreckers.
  • Ocean Monuments: Attract Battlegills.
  • Seaposts: Small structures (often found via maps) where players can find Barrel Supplies containing bait and fish.

Advancements#

The mod adds over 50 advancements to track your fishing progress:

  • Legendary Hunter of the Sea of Thieves: Catch every single fish variant in the mod.
  • Shoal Hunter: Catch a fish from a naturally spawning shoal.
  • Drunken Sailor: Catch a Rum Battlegill while under the Nausea effect.
  • Hidden Advancements: Awarded for rare interactions, such as catching a Shadow Stormfish during a peak storm.

Configuration#

The mod is highly customizable via the fish_of_thieves.json config file or the Cloth Config GUI:

  • Trophy Probability: Adjust the 10% default spawn rate.
  • Simple Spawning Conditions: If enabled, fish variants will ignore complex requirements (like Beehives or Amethyst) and spawn based purely on biome.
  • Shoal Spawning: Enable or disable the natural generation of fish shoals.
  • Bait Requirement: Toggle whether bait is mandatory for certain rare fish.
