Overview#
Infernal Expansion is a community-driven "Vanilla+" mod designed to expand the Minecraft Nether beyond the scope of the original Nether Update. It focuses on adding content that feels like a natural extension of the base game, including new biomes, creatures with unique behaviors, and a variety of building blocks. The mod aims to make the Nether a fully survivable and diverse dimension, offering new challenges and rewards for explorers.
Biomes#
The mod introduces a major new biome and enhances existing ones with unique features.
Glowstone Canyon
The Glowstone Canyon is a bright, yellow-themed biome where Glowstone has completely overrun the landscape. It is characterized by massive stalactites and stalagmites of Glowstone and its variants. The ground is covered in Shimmer Sand and Glimmer Gravel, which can collapse into deep ravines or "Death Pits."
- Flora: Luminous Fungus and Dullthorns grow throughout the canyon.
- Atmosphere: The air is filled with glowing particles, and the biome is home to specialized creatures like the Blindsight and Glowsquito.
- Hazards: Glimmer Gravel acts like sand but can lead to hidden lava pits. Touching the flora often inflicts the Luminous effect.
Enhanced Vanilla Biomes
- Nether Wastes: Now features Volines and scattered Quartz growths on the ground.
- Basalt Deltas: Home to the titanic Basalt Giants and Strider Altars.
- Soul Sand Valley: Populated by the swarming Embody and features Soul Shrines.
- Nether Forests: Crimson and Warped forests now contain Shroomlins and Fungus Caps.

Mob Details
- Voline: Small, round scavengers that eat dropped items. They are obsessed with gold and magma cream. If fed enough Magma Cream, they become "fattened" and can be fed gold items to produce Molten Gold. They will attack any entity with the Fire Resistance effect.
- Warpbeetle: Peaceful insects that teleport away when damaged. They can be found falling slowly through the air in Warped Forests.
- Basalt Giant: Titanic stone creatures that protect the Basalt Deltas. They are neutral but will use a powerful kick attack to punt Magma Cubes or players who provoke them.
- Embody: Ghostly, swarming spirits that attack players and skeletons. They are feared by Piglins and Hoglins.
- Blindsight: Blind predators that use sound and their long tongues to hunt. They bestow the Luminous effect on hit.
- Glowsquito: Flying pests that suck the light out of Glowstone, turning it into Dimstone and eventually Dullstone. They drop Glowcoke, a potent fuel source.
Blocks#
The mod adds nearly 100 new blocks, primarily focused on building and environmental variety.
Glowstone Variants
- Dimstone & Dullstone: Depleted versions of Glowstone that emit less light. They can be "recharged" by right-clicking with Glowstone Dust.
- Glowstone Bricks: Polished and brick variants of Glowstone, Dimstone, and Dullstone.
- Glowlight Glass: A luminous, blast-resistant glass variant.
Environmental Blocks
- Shimmer Sand & Glimmer Gravel: Falling blocks found in the Glowstone Canyon. Shimmer Sand can be smelted into Glowlight Glass.
- Soul Stone & Soul Slate: Dark, decorative stone found in Soul Sand Valleys, used for crafting Soul Stone Bricks.
- Fungus Caps: Large storage blocks for Crimson and Warped Fungus.
- Dullthorns: Prickly plants that deal damage and inflict the Luminous effect.
- Luminous Fungus: Small fungi that light up when they sense movement nearby.
Items & Equipment#
New materials allow for the creation of unique tools and weapons.
- Glowsilk Bow: Crafted using Glowsilk obtained from cocoons. It fires arrows that leave a trail of light and light up the area where they land.
- Blindsight Tongue Whip: A mid-range weapon crafted from a Blindsight Tongue and Molten Gold. It has high knockback and can keep enemies at a distance.
- Molten Gold: A unique material obtained from Volines. Used in the crafting of specialized gear.
- Soul Salt: Obtained from Embodies. It can be used to craft Soul Stone blocks or to cure Rotten Flesh into Cured Jerky, which provides a brief speed boost when eaten.
- Glowcoke: Dropped by Glowsquitos. It serves as a high-efficiency fuel source and is used to craft Glowlight Torches and Campfires.
- Music Discs: Two new tracks, "Flush" and "Soul Spunk," can be found as rare drops or in structure chests.
Mechanics & Effects#
Luminous Effect
Entities with the Luminous effect will glow brightly, making them visible in the dark. This effect is often applied by touching Glowstone Canyon flora or being hit by a Blindsight. While glowing, the player may attract the attention of certain mobs like Glowsquitos.
Infection Effect
Applied by eating Raw Hogchops or being attacked by certain infected creatures. It deals damage over time and can be cured with milk or by eating certain Nether foods.
Fire Color Changes
Standing in Soul Fire will now cause the flames on the player's screen to appear blue, matching the fire's actual color. This also applies to other modded fire types if compatibility mods are present.
Structures#
The Nether is populated with several new structures containing unique loot.
- Strider Altars: Tall, lighthouse-like structures found in the Basalt Deltas. They often contain chests with Silt and other Nether materials.
- Soul Shrines: Small shrines found in Soul Sand Valleys that showcase the use of Soul Slate and Soul Stone.
- Desolate Bastion Outposts: Small outposts found in the Glowstone Canyon, containing custom loot and guarded by Blackstone Dwarves.
- Heaven Portals: Ruined portal frames made of Glowstone found in the Glowstone Canyon, hinting at a forgotten connection to other realms.
