Overview#

Exotic Birds is a comprehensive wildlife expansion mod that introduces over 30 unique types of birds and more than 100 total species to the Minecraft world. Designed to make the environment feel more alive, the mod adds ambient sounds like woodpeckers pecking and lyrebirds mimicking their surroundings. Beyond aesthetics, the mod includes deep mechanics for egg collection, identification, and incubation, allowing players to build aviaries and even tame legendary creatures like the Phoenix.

Birds and Mobs#

The mod features a vast array of birds, each with specific habitats, behaviors, and taming requirements. Most birds can be tamed using Wheat Seeds, though some require specialized diets like fish or fruit.

The Phoenix

The Phoenix is the mod's legendary creature. It does not spawn naturally and must be hatched from a Phoenix Egg.

  • Taming: Once hatched, a Phoenix can be tamed by right-clicking it with a Saddle.
  • Flight: Look up to fly higher and look down to descend.
  • Variants: The Phoenix's appearance depends on where it is hatched:
    • Flame: Standard hatching.
    • Snowy: Hatched in snowy biomes.
    • Desert: Hatched in desert biomes.
    • Ender: Hatched in the End.
    • Nether: Hatched in the Nether.
    • Cloud: Hatched above Y=128.
    • Black: Hatched during a full moon.

Items and Tools#

The mod adds several utility items to help players interact with the new avian life.

  • Bird Encyclopedia: The primary guide for the mod. Left-clicking a bird with this book logs it into your collection, providing details on its habitat and diet.
  • Birdcages: Used to transport birds. Right-click a bird to capture it. To keep the bird inside the item when moving, crouch while breaking the placed cage.
  • Eggshell: Dropped when eggs fail to hatch or found in nests. It acts as a potent fertilizer similar to bonemeal.
  • Phoenix Dust: A rare resource found in dungeon chests or dropped by a dying Phoenix. Used to craft Phoenix Eggs.
  • Bird Meat: Dropped by most birds. Can be cooked in a furnace to restore hunger.

Blocks and Mechanics#

Bird Nests

Nests generate naturally on top of tree leaves. They contain 0-3 eggs, which can be standard bird eggs or Mystery Eggs. Nests can be crafted and placed; over time, they will naturally accumulate eggs if birds are nearby.

Egg Identifier (Analyzer)

Used to identify Mystery Eggs.

  • Input: Place a Mystery Egg in the top slot and Redstone Dust in the bottom slot.
  • Outcome: The egg will be identified as a specific bird species. There is a small chance (approx. 1/200) to produce a Phoenix Egg.

Egg Incubator

Standard bird eggs have a base hatch rate of 30% (or 10% depending on config). The Incubator increases this chance.

  • Input: Place eggs in the top slots and Blaze Powder in the fuel slot.
  • Outcome: The hatch rate increases by 5-10% per cycle, up to a maximum of 100%.
