Overview#
The Matchlock Guns Mod is a comprehensive historical firearms expansion for Minecraft versions 1.12.2 and 1.16.x. Unlike standard gun mods that offer modern weaponry, this mod focuses on the evolution of early firearm technology, ranging from the primitive Matchlock Arquebus to the advanced Flintlock Revolver and heavy Siege Artillery.
Each weapon is characterized by unique loading procedures, ignition requirements, and environmental vulnerabilities. The mod introduces a specialized crafting system centered around the Lathe, where players must precision-machine barrels and mechanical parts to assemble their arsenal.
Core Mechanics#
Ignition Systems
Firearms are divided into three primary technological tiers, each with distinct firing requirements:
- Matchlock: The most primitive tier. To fire, you must have a Flint and Steel in your offhand. Right-click to ignite the match; once ignited, you can fire the weapon until the match goes out. Matchlocks cannot be fired in the rain.
- Wheellock: A mid-tier system that is more reliable than the matchlock. These weapons must be "wound up" before firing by holding Sneak + Right Click until the winding sound stops.
- Flintlock: The highest tier of standard ignition. Flintlocks fire instantly upon right-click and are the only tier that functions reliably in rainy weather.
Loading Process (1.16.x Update)
In newer versions, loading is a multi-step manual process performed using the offhand:
- Gunpowder: Hold Right Click with 1 or 2 Gunpowder in the offhand (pistols require 1, muskets require 2).
- Projectile: Hold Right Click with a Roundshot or Gravel (for blunderbusses) in the offhand.
- Ramrod: Hold Right Click with a Ramrod in the offhand to seat the charge.
Note: Paper Cartridges can be used to combine gunpowder and shot into a single loading step, significantly increasing reload speed.
Small Arms#
The mod features an extensive list of hand-held firearms categorized by their ignition mechanism.
| Weapon | Tier | Description | Image |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matchlock Arquebus | Matchlock | A long-range, inexpensive early gun. High damage but very slow to load. | |
| Matchlock Pistol | Matchlock | Short-range and portable. Inaccurate but cheap to produce. | |
| Wheellock Musket | Wheellock | A reliable long gun that requires winding. Better accuracy than matchlocks. | |
| Flintlock Musket | Flintlock | The standard military firearm. High damage, good range, and weather-resistant. | |
| Flintlock Rifle | Flintlock | Features a rifled barrel for extreme accuracy and long-range engagement. | |
| Volley Gun | Flintlock | A multi-barrel weapon that fires a devastating spread of shots simultaneously. | |
| Revolver Pistol | Flintlock | An advanced handgun capable of holding multiple shots before needing a full reload. | |
| Blunderbuss | Various | A short-barreled weapon that uses Gravel as ammunition to fire a wide spread of pellets. |

Additional Weapons
- Pepperbox: A multi-barrel matchlock pistol.
- Musketoon: A shorter, carbine-style version of the musket.
- Wheellock Repeater: A rare, faster-firing variant of the wheellock.
- Blunt Gun: A specialized heavy-impact weapon used for knockback.
Artillery & Heavy Weapons#
Artillery pieces are stationary or semi-mobile entities that provide massive fire support. They must be placed as blocks/entities and loaded manually.
Artillery Types
- Light Field Cannon: A mobile cannon that can be moved and aimed. Effective against infantry and light structures.
- Heavy Siege Cannon: A massive, stationary gun. It is capable of penetrating 3x3 layers of cobblestone. It requires 32 Gravel for a spread shot or a single Heavy Cannonball.
- Volley Cannon: A specialized artillery piece designed to fire multiple projectiles in a wide arc.
- Puckle Gun: An early tripod-mounted machine gun. It uses a revolving cylinder to fire rapidly compared to standard muskets.

Loading Artillery
- Sponge: Use a Sponge to clean the barrel (prevents misfires).
- Powder: Load Gunpowder into the muzzle.
- Shot: Load a Cannonball or Grapeshot (Gravel).
- Ram: Use a Ramrod to push the charge back.
- Fire: Ignite the touchhole using a Linstock or Flint and Steel.
Crafting & Components#
Assembly requires specialized components created via the Lathe.
The Lathe System
To use the Lathe, place it in the world. Hold a Chisel in your offhand and a metal rod or ingot in your main hand, then right-click the Lathe.
- Smooth Barrel: Crafted using a standard Chisel and a Metal Rod on the Lathe.
- Rifled Barrel: Crafted using a Hardened Chisel and a Metal Rod on the Lathe.
- Mechanical Parts:
- Simple: Iron Ingot + Chisel.
- Precision: Gold Ingot + Hardened Chisel.
- Ultra Precision: Diamond + Hardened Chisel.
Component Recipes
- Matchlock Mechanism: 3x Iron Nuggets, 1x Iron Ingot, 1x String.
- Flintlock Mechanism: 1x Flint, 2x Iron Nuggets, 1x Iron Ingot, 1x Mechanical Part, 1x Blaze Powder.
- Grip/Stock: Crafted using Wood Planks and Sticks.
- Metal Rod: Crafted by smelting Iron Ingots or via specific smithing recipes.

Ammunition & Tools#
Ammunition
- Roundshot: Standard lead or iron balls used for most pistols and muskets.
- Gravel: Used as "grapeshot" for blunderbusses and cannons to create a spread effect.
- Paper Cartridges: Pre-packed gunpowder and shot that speed up the loading process.
Essential Tools
- Ramrod: Essential for loading almost all firearms. Must be held in the offhand during the reload sequence.
- Chisel / Hardened Chisel: Used at the Lathe to shape barrels and mechanical parts.
- Linstock: A long pole used to safely ignite cannons from a distance.
- Match: A slow-burning cord required for Matchlock weapons.
