Overview#
Mine Painter is a versatile toolset designed for builders and artists who find the standard one-meter blocks of Minecraft too restrictive. It introduces the ability to manipulate blocks at a sub-block level, effectively allowing for the creation of custom furniture, statues, and detailed architectural elements. Additionally, the mod provides a robust painting system where players can create 16x16 pixel art on canvases that can be placed on any surface. The mod is built on the concept of 'voxels' (volume pixels), where a standard block is treated as an 8x8x8 grid of smaller pieces that can be added or removed individually.
Sculpting Mechanics#
Sculpting is the core feature of Mine Painter, allowing players to carve blocks into unique shapes.
The Sculpting Process
To begin sculpting, a player must use a Chisel on a standard full block. Upon the first click, the block is converted into a 'Sculpture' block. From there, the player can remove individual voxels.
- Removing Voxels: Left-clicking with a chisel removes a single voxel (1/8th of a block).
- Adding Voxels: If the player has 'Sculpture Pieces' in their inventory (obtained by chiseling), they can right-click to place a voxel back onto a sculpture.
- Symmetry: Some chisels allow for mirrored sculpting, making it easier to create symmetrical objects like chair legs or pillars.
Sculpture Pieces
When a voxel is removed from a block, it drops as a Sculpture Piece. These pieces retain the texture of the original block (e.g., an Oak Wood piece or a Stone piece). These can be used to repair sculptures or to build entirely new shapes from scratch by placing them in empty space or on existing sculptures.
Sculpting Tools#
The mod adds several tiers of chisels, each with different durability and capabilities.
| Item | Material | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Stone Chisel | Cobblestone | Basic tool with low durability. Removes one voxel at a time. |
| Iron Chisel | Iron Ingot | Standard tool with moderate durability. |
| Diamond Chisel | Diamond | High durability. Can remove larger sections or work with harder materials. |
| Bar Chisel | Iron/Diamond | Designed to remove a 1x1x8 'bar' of voxels in a single click. |
| Square Chisel | Iron/Diamond | Removes a 1x8x8 'slice' or a 8x8x1 'plate' of voxels. |
Crafting Recipes
- Basic Chisel: One stick and one material (Stone, Iron, or Diamond) placed diagonally in the crafting grid.
- Wrench: Used to rotate sculptures once they have been placed. Crafted with three iron ingots in an 'L' shape.
Painting and Pixel Art#
Mine Painter allows for the creation of custom paintings through the use of Canvases and Paintbrushes.
The Canvas
A Canvas is a 16x16 grid that can be placed on the side of any block. Once placed, it acts as a drawing surface. Canvases can be picked up and moved, and they will retain the artwork drawn on them.
Painting Tools
- Paintbrush: The primary tool for drawing. It must be used in conjunction with a Palette.
- Palette: This item holds the colors. By right-clicking with a Palette, a GUI opens where players can mix dyes to create custom colors.
- Mixing Colors: The Palette uses the standard RGB (Red, Green, Blue) or RYB color mixing logic based on the dyes provided (Rose Red, Cactus Green, Lapis Lazuli, etc.).
Painting Process
- Place a Canvas on a wall.
- Hold a Palette in your off-hand (or have it in your inventory) and a Paintbrush in your main hand.
- Right-click the canvas to apply the selected color to a pixel.
- Shift + Right-click to pick a color already present on the canvas (Eyedropper tool).
Advanced Mechanics#
The Hinge
The Hinge is a special component that allows sculptures to function as doors, gates, or trapdoors.
- Application: Place a Hinge on the side of a sculpture block.
- Function: When right-clicked (or powered by Redstone), the sculpture will swing open or closed. If multiple sculpture blocks are touching, the Hinge will treat them as a single connected entity, allowing for large, custom-shaped gates.
Small Blocks and Covers
By using the Square Chisel, players can create 'Covers' (1/8th thickness blocks). These are highly useful for hiding wiring or creating thin walls. These covers can be placed in the same block space as other non-solid blocks like torches or redstone wire in some configurations.
Scrap Chisel
The Scrap Chisel is a utility tool used to quickly dismantle sculptures. Instead of removing one voxel, it breaks the entire sculpture back into its constituent Sculpture Pieces instantly.
