Overview#

Mo Glass is a decorative and functional mod designed to fill a long-standing gap in Minecraft's building palette: the lack of glass stairs and slabs. The mod provides high-quality, transparent building blocks that integrate perfectly with vanilla glass. It includes variants for every type of glass available in the base game, including all 16 colors of stained glass and the light-blocking tinted glass.

Key features include:

  • Seamless Transparency: Blocks connect visually to vanilla glass and each other without internal borders.
  • Full Palette Support: Includes slabs and stairs for clear, tinted, and all 16 stained glass colors.
  • Light Mechanics: Tinted glass variants correctly block light based on their placement.
  • Stonecutter Integration: All blocks can be crafted efficiently using the stonecutter.

Blocks#

The mod adds a total of 36 new block types (18 slab variants and 18 stair variants). All blocks share the same hardness and blast resistance as their full-block counterparts.

Glass Slabs

Glass slabs are half-height blocks that can be placed in the top or bottom half of a block space. When two slabs of the same type are placed together, they form a seamless double slab.

Block Name Transparency Light Blocking
Glass Slab Transparent No
Tinted Glass Slab Translucent Yes (when solid)
[Color] Stained Glass Slab Transparent (Colored) No

Glass Stairs

Glass stairs allow for diagonal builds and intricate roofing. They support all standard stair states, including straight, inner corner, and outer corner configurations.

Block Name Transparency Light Blocking
Glass Stairs Transparent No
Tinted Glass Stairs Translucent Yes (when solid)
[Color] Stained Glass Stairs Transparent (Colored) No

Stained Variants

The mod includes slabs and stairs for the following colors:

  • White, Orange, Magenta, Light Blue, Yellow, Lime, Pink, Gray, Light Gray, Cyan, Purple, Blue, Brown, Green, Red, and Black.

Mechanics#

Seamless Transparency

One of the primary technical achievements of Mo Glass is its seamless transparency. In vanilla Minecraft, glass blocks hide their internal faces when placed next to other glass blocks. Mo Glass extends this logic to stairs and slabs. Whether you place a glass stair next to a glass slab, a full glass block, or another stair, the touching faces will become invisible, creating the illusion of a single, continuous piece of glass.

Working Translucency (Tinted Glass)

Tinted glass stairs and slabs retain the unique property of blocking light while remaining visually translucent.

  • Light Blocking: If placed in a way that leaves no air gaps (e.g., a solid wall of tinted slabs), they will completely block light from passing through.
  • Light Passage: If there is a gap in the geometry (such as the open space in a stair block), light will pass through that specific area.

Recipes#

All blocks can be crafted using standard Minecraft shapes in a Crafting Table or more efficiently in a Stonecutter.

Crafting Table Recipes

Result Ingredients Pattern
Glass Slab (x6) 3x Glass Blocks 3 blocks in a horizontal row
Glass Stairs (x4) 6x Glass Blocks 6 blocks in a stair shape
Stained Glass Slab (x6) 3x Stained Glass Blocks 3 blocks in a horizontal row
Stained Glass Stairs (x4) 6x Stained Glass Blocks 6 blocks in a stair shape
Tinted Glass Slab (x6) 3x Tinted Glass Blocks 3 blocks in a horizontal row
Tinted Glass Stairs (x4) 6x Tinted Glass Blocks 6 blocks in a stair shape

Stonecutter Recipes

Using a stonecutter is the most resource-efficient way to obtain these blocks:

  • 1 Glass Block → 2 Glass Slabs
  • 1 Glass Block → 1 Glass Stair

Technical Details#

The mod implements a complex custom rendering system to handle the transparency of non-full blocks. Because stairs can exist in 40 different states (direction, half, and shape) and slabs in 3 states, the mod must calculate transparency across thousands of potential neighbor combinations.

  • Stair Scenarios: 10,800 possible neighbor scenarios accounted for.
  • Slab Scenarios: 810 possible neighbor scenarios accounted for.
  • Glass Block Adjustments: 270 scenarios (compared to 12 in vanilla) to ensure full blocks recognize the transparency of adjacent stairs and slabs.
