Overview#

Pyrotech is an early-game expansion mod designed to bridge the gap between punching trees and the industrial era. It replaces standard crafting and smelting mechanics with immersive, world-based interactions. The mod is characterized by its lack of traditional Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs); instead, players interact directly with blocks in the world to process materials.

Key features include primitive tools made from flint, bone, and obsidian, unique storage solutions like crates and stashes, and a tiered progression system for smelting and resource gathering. The mod also introduces a 'charred' guidebook (via Patchouli) that serves as the primary in-game documentation.

Getting Started#

In Pyrotech, the early game is significantly more challenging. Players cannot simply craft a wooden pickaxe or a crafting table using the vanilla 2x2 grid for most items.

Initial Resource Gathering

  • Rocks: Instead of mining stone directly, players must find small rocks on the surface or break stone blocks to receive shards and rocks. These are used for basic tools and machines.
  • Plant Fibers: Breaking tall grass yields plant fibers, which can be crafted into twine. Twine is a vital component for early-game binding.
  • Flint: Found by breaking gravel. Flint is the primary material for your first set of functional tools.
  • Sticks: Gathered by breaking leaves or picking them up off the ground.

The First Tools

Before you can craft a Worktable, you must create Crude Tools. These have very low durability and are intended only to help you gather the materials needed for Flint-tier equipment.

Tool Tier Durability Harvest Level Notes
Crude 32 0 Very fragile, made from rocks and sticks.
Flint 150 1 Standard early-game tier; requires twine.
Bone 225 1 Slightly better than flint; requires bone shards.
Obsidian 800 2 High durability; requires advanced processing.

Primitive Machines#

Pyrotech replaces the standard crafting table and furnace with several specialized machines.

Chopping Block

Used to process logs into planks and planks into sticks.

  • Usage: Place a log on the block and right-click it with an axe. Multiple hits are required to break the log into planks.
  • Variants: Oak, Spruce, Birch, Jungle, Acacia, Dark Oak.

Worktables

There are two tiers: Wood and Stone. Unlike a crafting table, items are placed directly on the surface of the worktable.

  • Crafting: Place the items in the 3x3 grid on the table. To complete the recipe, you must right-click the table with a specific tool (usually a Hammer).
  • Automation: Items stay on the table when you walk away, allowing for visual crafting.

Pit Kiln

The Pit Kiln is the first method of 'smelting' available. It is used to fire clay into bricks or terracotta.

  • Construction: Dig a 1x1 hole in the ground and place the item to be fired at the bottom.
  • Firing: Cover the item with 8 pieces of Straw (from dried grass) and 8 Wood Logs. Light the top with an Igniter (Flint and Tinder or Bow Drill). After a period of time, the logs will burn away, leaving the fired product.

Soaking Pot

Used for liquid-based processing, such as creating leather or treated wood.

  • Usage: Fill the pot with a fluid (like water or tannin) and add an item. Over time, the item will transform.
  • Capacity: 1000mB of fluid.

Compacting Bin

Used to compress items into blocks (e.g., turning plant fibers into thatch or charcoal fragments into charcoal blocks).

  • Usage: Fill the bin with the required items and then jump on top of it to 'compact' the materials manually.

Advanced Machines and Smelting#

As you progress, you will move from primitive pits to structured machines.

Stone and Refractory Machines

These machines are used for more complex recipes and are more efficient than their primitive counterparts.

  • Stone Oven: A basic furnace replacement that requires fuel and time but does not have a GUI.
  • Stone Sawmill: Used for more efficient wood processing.
  • Stone Crucible: Used for melting materials into liquids.

Carbonization

Pyrotech introduces a realistic way to create charcoal and coal coke through carbonization.

  • Pit Burning: A large-scale method where logs are placed in a pile, covered with non-flammable blocks (like dirt), and ignited. This produces Charcoal and Wood Tar.
  • Refractory Burning: An upgraded version using Refractory Bricks for higher yields and Coal Coke production.

Bloomery and Wither Forge

These are the high-tier smelting structures.

  • Bloomery: Used to smelt iron ore into 'Iron Blooms'. These blooms must then be worked on an anvil to produce usable iron ingots.
  • Wither Forge: An end-game smelting station used for processing advanced materials and alloys.

Bellows

Bellows can be placed next to kilns, ovens, and bloomeries. Pumping the bellows (manually or mechanically) increases the temperature of the machine, speeding up the process or allowing for high-heat recipes.

Storage Solutions#

Pyrotech provides several aesthetic and functional storage options that fit the primitive theme.

  • Crate: A basic storage block that holds a moderate amount of items. Items are visible on the top when the crate is open.
  • Stash: A low-capacity storage block that is very cheap to craft.
  • Shelf: Can be mounted on walls to display and store up to four items.
  • Wood Rack: Specifically designed to hold logs and planks, allowing for organized wood storage.
  • Stone and Refractory Tanks: Used for fluid storage. They can be filled and emptied using buckets or faucets.
  • Rock Bag: A portable storage item used specifically for carrying rocks, shards, and pebbles.

Mechanics and Interaction#

No-GUI Interaction

Almost every block in Pyrotech is interacted with by right-clicking with an item in hand or an empty hand. To see what is inside a machine, you simply look at it. If you have Waila or The One Probe installed, extended information like progress bars and fluid levels will appear in the HUD.

Incremental Block Drops

Pyrotech changes how blocks drop items based on the tool used. If you break a block with an insufficient tool, you may only receive 'shards' or 'fragments' of the block instead of the block itself. This encourages the use of proper tools for every task.

Mulch and Farmland

By processing organic matter in a Mulcher, you can create Mulch. Applying Mulch to Farmland creates Mulched Farmland, which significantly increases crop growth speed and prevents the soil from dehydrating.

Igniters

Standard Flint and Steel is not available early on. Instead, players must use:

  • Bow Drill: A high-effort, low-durability way to start fires.
  • Flint and Tinder: A slightly better version of the bow drill.
  • Matchstick: Single-use fire starters.

Faucets and Fluid Transfer

Fluids can be moved between tanks and machines using Faucets. Placing a faucet on the side of a tank and providing a redstone signal (or manual click) will cause fluid to flow into a container or machine placed below it.

Tools and Materials#

Pyrotech adds several new material types required for progression.

Material Source Usage
Refractory Brick Fired in a Pit Kiln Used to build heat-resistant machines.
Masonry Brick Fired in a Pit Kiln Used for structural blocks and stone machines.
Wood Tar Carbonization byproduct Used as a fuel and in various crafting recipes.
Slag Smelting byproduct Can be processed for trace minerals or used as a building material.
Tallow Cooking meat Used for making candles and torches.

Torches

Vanilla torches are not craftable in the player's inventory.

  • Wood Torches: Made with sticks and resin/tallow. They have a limited lifespan and will eventually burn out.
  • Stone Torches: Permanent light sources that require more advanced materials to craft.
