Overview#
Rail Bridges is a specialized utility mod (often categorized as a 'micromod') that solves the long-standing challenge of building efficient minecart tracks across large gaps, ravines, and oceans. Traditionally, players are required to place a solid line of blocks (such as cobblestone or wood) to support rails. This mod introduces the Bridge Rail, a unique block that functions as both a rail and its own structural support.

Designed with a 'vanilla-plus' philosophy, the mod maintains game balance by imposing specific physical limitations on the player while providing a streamlined solution for logistics and transportation. It is particularly useful for players who want to create aesthetic, minimalist railways that do not clutter the landscape with massive support pillars.
Blocks & Items#
The mod adds a single, highly functional block to the game. While it appears as an item in the inventory, it functions as a placeable block in the world.
Bridge Rail
The Bridge Rail is the core component of the mod. It combines the properties of a standard Rail with a self-supporting frame.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Hardness | 0.7 |
| Tool | Pickaxe (Any) |
| Stack Size | 64 |
| Luminous | No |
| Transparent | Yes |
| Flammable | No |
Behavioral Notes:
- Self-Support: Unlike standard rails, the Bridge Rail does not require a solid block underneath it. It can be placed directly into air or water.
- Placement Restriction: To maintain its role as a bridge, the block cannot be placed on top of a solid block. If you attempt to place it on a solid surface, the placement will fail. It must be attached to the side of an existing block or another Bridge Rail.
- Drops: When broken, it drops itself as an item. If the block it is attached to is destroyed and it has no other connections, it will break and drop as an item.
Mechanics#
The Bridge Rail features unique physics and interaction rules that distinguish it from vanilla rails.
Movement and Interaction
- Minecarts: Minecarts (including Chest, Hopper, and TNT variants) travel across Bridge Rails at standard speeds. They treat the Bridge Rail exactly like a normal rail, maintaining momentum and responding to powered rails at the bridge's entrance or exit.
- Player Movement: The Bridge Rail is not a solid block for entities. If a player attempts to walk across it normally, they will fall through the gaps. To traverse the bridge on foot, the player must sneak (hold Shift). This mechanic is intended to simulate the difficulty of walking across narrow railroad ties.
- Mob Proofing: Most mobs (Zombies, Creepers, etc.) cannot pathfind across Bridge Rails and will fall through if they attempt to cross. This makes Bridge Rails an excellent choice for creating secure entrances to bases that remain accessible to minecarts but inaccessible to hostile creatures.
Connectivity and Geometry
- Slopes: Bridge Rails fully support verticality. You can create ascending or descending tracks to change elevation across a gap.
- Curves: One of the mod's primary limitations is that Bridge Rails cannot form corners. They only connect in straight lines (North-South or East-West). To create a turn, you must transition the track back to solid blocks and use standard vanilla rails.
- Vanilla Integration: Bridge Rails seamlessly connect to standard Rails, Powered Rails, Detector Rails, and Activator Rails at the points where the bridge meets solid ground.

Recipes#
Crafting Bridge Rails is straightforward and utilizes standard materials, reflecting the mod's goal of being a balanced addition to survival gameplay.
Bridge Rail Recipe
To craft Bridge Rails, you combine standard Rails with Sticks, which act as the structural supports for the bridge.
| Result | Ingredients | Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Bridge Rail (x3) | Rail (x3) + Stick (x3) | 3 Rails in the top row, 3 Sticks in the middle row |

Note: The recipe is shaped and must be placed in the top and middle rows as shown.
World Generation & Entities#
As a focused utility mod, Rail Bridges does not modify the following aspects of the game:
- Mobs: No new creatures or entities are added. The mod relies on existing Minecart entities.
- Biomes/Dimensions: No new environmental areas are introduced. The mod is designed to be used within existing overworld, nether, or end biomes.
- Structures: Bridge Rails do not generate naturally in the world (e.g., in Mineshafts). They must be crafted and placed by the player.
- Commands: There are no specific console commands associated with this mod.
