Overview#
Tetra is a modular item mod that focuses on the customization of tools, weapons, and shields. Unlike vanilla Minecraft, where tools are static items, Tetra allows players to replace individual parts of an item—such as the blade, hilt, or handle—to change its stats and capabilities. The mod emphasizes exploration, requiring players to find ancient ruins and specialized machinery to unlock the highest tiers of technology.
Key features include:
- Modular Construction: Swap parts to balance durability, speed, and damage.
- Honing and Leveling: Tools improve as you use them, allowing for permanent stat boosts.
- Ancient Technology: Discover underground ruins containing the Forge Hammer and other advanced machinery.
- Material Synergy: Different materials provide unique bonuses when combined.
Getting Started#
To begin your journey with Tetra, you must first create a basic setup. The mod does not use a standard crafting table for its modular upgrades.
1. Crafting a Mallet
First, craft a basic wooden mallet using two sticks and two planks (arranged like a hammer). This is your primary tool for interacting with Tetra's mechanics.
2. The Workbench
Place a vanilla Crafting Table on the ground and right-click it with your Mallet. This will transform the table into a Tetra Workbench. This block is where all modular modifications take place.
3. The Holosphere
Craft a Holosphere using a stick and a piece of iron (or find one in a chest). The Holosphere acts as the in-game guide. By holding it, you can view available modules, material stats, and progress through the mod's various tiers.
Modular Items#
Tetra categorizes items into several base types. Each type can be disassembled and rebuilt at the Workbench.
Swords
Swords can be modified with different blades (short, long, heavy), guards, and pommels.
- Shortblade: Faster attack speed, lower reach.
- Greatsword: High damage, sweeping attacks, but slower speed.
- Machete: Effective for clearing vegetation and high-speed combat.
Tools (Single and Double Headed)
Tools like Pickaxes, Axes, and Shovels can be converted into modular versions.
- Double-Headed: Can have a pickaxe head on one side and an axe head on the other.
- Adze: A versatile tool head that functions as both an axe and a shovel.
- Claw: Used for prying things open or as a fast, low-damage weapon.
Bows and Crossbows
Modular bows allow for the customization of staves and strings.
- Longbow: High power and range.
- Recurve Bow: Faster draw speed.
- Strings: Use different materials like silk or gut to change projectile velocity.
Shields
Shields can be upgraded with different plates and grips to increase block coverage or reduce movement penalties.
Core Mechanics#
Integrity
Every modular item has an Integrity stat.
- Integrity Gain: Provided by handles, bindings, and certain grips.
- Integrity Cost: Consumed by powerful heads, blades, and enhancements. If the cost exceeds the gain, the item cannot be assembled. This forces players to balance powerful components with sturdy supports.
Honing
As you use a Tetra tool, it gains experience. Once it levels up, you can "hone" it at a Workbench. Honing allows you to pick a specific stat to increase permanently, such as:
- Increased Attack Speed
- Higher Durability
- Increased Armor Penetration
- Reduced Integrity Cost
Tiers and Hammers
| Modifying items requires a hammer of a specific tier. | Hammer Tier | Material | Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Wood | Basic crafting | |
| Tier 2 | Stone / Blackstone | Tier 1 Hammer | |
| Tier 3 | Iron | Tier 2 Hammer | |
| Tier 4 | Obsidian / Diamond | Tier 3 Hammer | |
| Tier 5 | Netherite | Tier 4 Hammer | |
| Tier 6+ | Ancient Forge | Found in Ruins |
Blocks and Technology#
The Forge Hammer
Found in Ancient Ruins, the Forge Hammer is a multi-block machine required for high-tier modifications. It must be powered by Combustion Chambers or Thermal Conductors.
Core Extractor
Used to extract cores from certain blocks or entities, providing rare materials for high-end upgrades.
Seeping Bedrock
Found at the bottom of the world in specific biomes, this block can be tapped for infinite resources if the correct machinery is applied.
Multi-block Components
- Combustion Chamber: Provides power to the Forge Hammer using solid fuel.
- Insulated Plate: Used to upgrade the Forge Hammer to handle higher temperatures.
Materials#
Materials in Tetra are not just for durability; they provide unique traits.
| Material | Primary Trait | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Iron | Sturdy | High durability and balanced stats. |
| Gold | Soft | Low durability but high enchantability and speed. |
| Diamond | Sharp | Massive damage and durability. |
| Netherite | Heavy | High knockback and fire resistance. |
| Obsidian | Brittle | High mining level but cannot be honed easily. |
| Copper | Conductive | Synergizes with lightning and energy-based upgrades. |
| End Steel | Warp | Provides increased reach and teleportation-related perks. |
Structures and Exploration#
Tetra adds unique structures to the world to facilitate progression.
Ancient Ruins
These are large, sprawling underground complexes found deep in the Overworld (usually below Y=0). They contain:
- The Forge: A central room with a Forge Hammer.
- Containers: Crates that must be pried open with a Claw or Hammer, containing rare modular parts.
- Scavenging Sites: Walls and machinery that can be harvested for ancient scrap metal.
Geodes
Large crystalline structures found underground. Breaking them provides unique materials for tool heads that cannot be found elsewhere.
Scavenging and Salvaging#
Scavenging is a core mechanic for obtaining high-tier components.
- Prying: Use a tool with the "Prying" property (like a Claw) to open crates in ruins.
- Hammering: Use a hammer to break down old machinery into usable parts.
- Cutting: Use a blade to salvage fabrics or leathers from decorative blocks.
Salvaging modular items at a workbench returns a portion of the materials used, allowing you to recycle expensive components like Netherite or Diamonds into new tool shapes.
