Tidal Towns Wiki

A guide to Tidal Towns: the floating ocean villages it adds, where they generate, what you find inside them, and how to make the most of them.

5 sections · 400 words

Overview#

Tidal Towns adds a brand-new type of village that generates naturally on top of the open ocean. Instead of sitting on land, these settlements are built from driftwood and planks and float on the waves, giving deep ocean biomes a reason to explore. Everything is made from familiar vanilla materials, so the towns feel like a natural extension of the game rather than something out of place.

What It Adds#

Each ocean town is a small network of structures connected by wooden plank walkways and bridges across the water:

  • Driftwood houses of several sizes, from small huts to larger family homes.
  • Watchtowers that rise above the walkways and give the town its silhouette.
  • Farms where villagers tend crops right over the sea.
  • A weaponsmith and other work buildings, so the town functions like a real village.
  • Lantern-lit paths, chains and glass windows that give the settlement a cozy, lived-in look.

Villagers spawn and live in the town just like a normal village, so you can trade with them and even start a new home base on the water.

Where They Generate#

Tidal Towns appear in deep ocean biomes during world generation. Because they float on the surface, the easiest way to find one is to sail across open water or watch the horizon while travelling by boat. They are spread out like normal villages, so you may need to explore a fair distance before running into your first town.

How to Use It#

Tidal Towns is available both as a mod and as a data pack:

  • As a mod, simply place the file in your mods folder. It works on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt and loads automatically.
  • As a data pack, add it to a world's datapacks folder (or a server) and the towns start generating with no mod loader required.

Either way it only adds data-driven world generation, so it is lightweight, safe to add to new worlds and compatible with vanilla survival and most other content.

Tips#

  • Add the pack to a fresh world or unexplored ocean, since structures only generate in chunks that have not been loaded yet.
  • Bring a boat: the towns are out on open water, and the plank walkways make great places to dock.
  • Treat a tidal town like any village - you can trade, sleep and even claim a house as a seaside base.
  • Watch the towers on the horizon; they are the easiest part of a town to spot from a distance.
