Overview#

The Tool Belt mod is a streamlined utility mod designed to solve the common problem of hotbar clutter. It introduces a wearable belt item that functions as a secondary inventory specifically for tools, weapons, and other non-stackable items. By using a radial menu, players can swap between their pickaxe, sword, bow, and other essentials without manually moving items in their main inventory.

Key features include:

  • Radial Menu: A quick-access wheel for seamless tool swapping.
  • Upgradeable Storage: Starts with 2 slots and can be expanded up to 9.
  • Visual Integration: The belt and its first two stored items are rendered directly on the player's character model.
  • Curios/Baubles Support: Can be equipped in dedicated accessory slots to save armor space.

Items#

The mod adds two primary items essential for its functionality: the Tool Belt itself and the Belt Pouch used for upgrades.

Tool Belt

The core item of the mod. When crafted, it provides 2 slots for storing non-stackable items. It can be held in the hand to open its inventory or equipped in a belt slot.

Belt Pouch

A specialized component used to expand the capacity of an existing Tool Belt. Each pouch added increases the belt's capacity by one slot, up to a maximum of 9 slots.

Mechanics and Usage#

The Tool Belt mod relies on a few key mechanics to provide "Item Access Made Easy."

The Radial Menu

By holding the 'R' key (default), a radial menu appears on the screen. Moving the mouse towards an item in the wheel and releasing the key will instantly swap that tool into your main hand. If you are already holding a tool, it will be swapped back into the belt.

Inventory Management

There are three ways to manage the items inside your belt:

  1. Right-Clicking: While holding the Tool Belt in your hand, right-click to open its internal inventory.
  2. Belt Slot Key: Pressing the 'V' key (default) opens the dedicated belt slot inventory if the mod is installed without Curios.
  3. Radial Insertion: While holding a tool in your hand, hold the radial menu key and hover over an empty slot to insert the tool.

Item Restrictions

By default, the Tool Belt only accepts non-stackable items. This includes:

  • All Tools (Pickaxes, Axes, Shovels, Hoes)
  • Weapons (Swords, Bows, Crossbows, Tridents)
  • Utility Items (Flint and Steel, Shears, Buckets, Compasses)
  • Modded tools (Tinkers' Construct tools, etc.)

Upgrading the Belt#

To increase the capacity of your Tool Belt from the base 2 slots to the maximum of 9, you must use an Anvil.

Upgrade Process

Place your Tool Belt in the first slot of the Anvil and a Belt Pouch in the second slot. Each upgrade costs a specific amount of Experience Levels.

Upgrade Level Total Slots XP Cost
Base 2 N/A
1st Pouch 3 3 Levels
2nd Pouch 4 5 Levels
3rd Pouch 5 8 Levels
4th Pouch 6 12 Levels
5th Pouch 7 15 Levels
6th Pouch 8 20 Levels
7th Pouch 9 30 Levels

Configuration and Compatibility#

The mod is highly compatible with other infrastructure mods and offers extensive configuration options.

Requirements

  • Sewing Kit: This mod is a required dependency for Tool Belt in version 1.20.1.

Integration

  • Curios API / Baubles: The Tool Belt can be placed in the 'Belt' accessory slot. This allows the player to wear the belt without occupying a standard inventory slot or armor slot.
  • Visuals: The belt is visible on the player's waist. The first two items stored in the belt will also appear hanging from the sides of the belt on the player model.

Configuration Options

Users can modify the toolbelt-client.toml and toolbelt-common.toml files to adjust:

  • Whitelist/Blacklist: Explicitly allow or disallow specific items from being placed in the belt.
  • Radial Menu Position: Change the screen coordinates or behavior of the selection wheel.
  • Display: Toggle whether the belt and tools are rendered on the player model.

World Generation and Entities#

Tool Belt is strictly a utility and functional mod. As such, it does not add any of the following to the game:

  • Mobs/Creatures: No new entities or animals are introduced.
  • Biomes/Dimensions: No changes are made to world generation or new realms.
  • Structures: No new buildings or dungeons are added to the world.

All items are obtained through crafting or by finding materials in the vanilla game.
