Overview#

Verdure is a lightweight environmental improvement mod designed to make the Minecraft landscape feel more organic and lived-in. It focuses on 'micro-details'—small additions like pebbles, fallen leaves, and tree branches—that collectively transform the exploration experience without overhauling the core game mechanics. The mod primarily targets the 1.18.2 version, utilizing the updated world generation to place new flora and geological features naturally across various biomes.

World Generation & Scenery#

The primary draw of Verdure is its subtle yet impactful changes to how the world generates. These features are designed to break up the repetitive nature of vanilla grass and dirt surfaces.

Enhanced Tree Structures

Trees in Verdure are no longer simple vertical pillars. Oak and Birch trees now generate with horizontal Tree Branches. These branches extend from the main trunk, giving the trees a more complex and realistic silhouette. Additionally, trees may occasionally feature Shelf Mushrooms growing directly on their bark, particularly in damp or shaded forest areas.

Ground Details

To add texture to the forest floor and plains, the mod introduces several decorative ground elements:

  • Fallen Leaves: These appear as thin, carpet-like layers beneath tree canopies. They match the color of the leaves above, simulating natural shedding.
  • Rocks and Pebbles: Small stone clusters that scatter across the terrain, providing a rugged look to hillsides and forest floors.
  • Smooth Dirt Patches: Naturally occurring patches of a softer-textured dirt that break up the standard coarse dirt and grass patterns.

Blocks#

Verdure adds several new blocks that serve both decorative and atmospheric purposes. Most of these blocks are found naturally during world generation.

Block Description Primary Location
Humus A rich, dark soil block that is significantly darker than standard dirt. Found under Dark Oak trees in Dark Forest biomes.
Smooth Dirt A variant of dirt with a refined, less grainy texture. Found in small patches in Plains and Forests.
Tree Branch A log-like block that can be placed horizontally to simulate branches. Attached to Oak and Birch trees.
Fallen Leaves A thin, non-solid block similar to a carpet. Underneath tree canopies.
Rock / Pebble Small decorative stone blocks that sit on top of other blocks. Scattered across most terrestrial biomes.
Shelf Mushroom A mushroom variant that attaches to the side of logs. Found on tree trunks.

Flora#

New plant life adds color and variety to the green expanses of the overworld. These plants can be broken and replanted for decorative use in gardens.

  • Clovers: Small, multi-leafed green plants that spawn in patches. They provide a dense ground-cover look that is shorter than standard grass.
  • Daisies: New floral varieties that add white and yellow accents to the landscape.

Mechanics#

Biome Atmosphere

In Dark Forest biomes, the introduction of Humus patches significantly changes the aesthetic. Because Humus is much darker than standard Dirt or Grass, it absorbs more light visually, making the 'Dark' Forest feel considerably gloomier and more atmospheric.

Interaction

  • Harvesting: Most flora (Clovers, Daisies) can be harvested instantly by hand. Fallen leaves and branches can be collected using Shears or an Axe respectively to maintain their form for building.
  • Placement: Tree branches and shelf mushrooms use directional placement, allowing players to attach them to the sides of blocks to create custom custom trees or overgrown structures.

Recipes#

While many of Verdure's blocks are intended to be found through exploration, several can be crafted or obtained through standard block interactions.

Result Ingredients Method
Smooth Dirt Dirt Found in world gen (can be tilled/shoveled in some versions).
Tree Branch Corresponding Log Obtained by breaking naturally generated branches with an Axe.
Fallen Leaves Corresponding Leaves Obtained by using Shears on naturally generated fallen leaves.
