More Cave Sounds Wiki

How the More Cave Sounds resource pack adds 23 extra cave ambience clips to Minecraft's underground audio, and how the sounds are merged with the ones already in the game.

Overview#

Minecraft plays an occasional ambience clip while you are underground in the dark - the sound the game labels Eerie noise in the subtitles. Vanilla draws that clip from a fixed pool, and because the pool is small, anyone who mines for more than an hour starts recognising individual sounds.

More Cave Sounds adds 23 brand-new clips to that pool. Nothing is taken away: every ambience sound already in the game stays in the rotation, so the pack roughly doubles the number of possible sounds and makes repeats far less frequent.

What It Changes#

The pack is audio only. It ships one sound definition file and 23 .ogg clips.

Element Change
Cave ambience pool Expanded from the vanilla clips to 46 total
Existing clips Left in place, still played
Subtitle Unchanged - still shows Eerie noise
Textures, models, GUI Untouched

Because it overrides nothing visual, it can sit above or below any texture pack you already use without conflicting with it.

Where You Hear It#

The ambience triggers in dark, enclosed spaces underground, so the new clips show up everywhere the vanilla ones do:

  • Ordinary stone and deepslate caves
  • Dripstone caves
  • Lush caves
  • The deep dark
  • Abandoned mineshafts
  • Any unlit room you have dug out yourself

Turn subtitles on in the accessibility settings if you want to see Eerie noise appear each time one plays.

Installing the Pack#

  1. Download the pack .zip file.
  2. Place the .zip into your .minecraft/resourcepacks folder (do not unzip it).
  3. Launch Minecraft and open Options -> Resource Packs.
  4. Move More Cave Sounds from the left (available) list to the right (selected) list.
  5. Click Done and head underground.

The pack can be turned on or off at any time from the same screen.

Compatibility#

  • Texture packs - no conflict at all, since nothing visual is overridden. Order in the pack list does not matter.
  • Shaders - unaffected; shaders do not touch sound.
  • Other sound packs - only packs that also replace the cave ambience event can conflict. If two such packs are active, whichever sits higher in the selected list wins.
  • Servers - the pack is client side, so you hear the extra sounds on any server without the server needing anything.

It makes no gameplay changes and has no measurable performance cost.

Notes#

  • The new clips are deliberately written to sound like the originals: low, distant and hollow, at the same volume, so nothing jumps out as obviously added.
  • Ambience is random and fairly rare by design, so give it a few minutes underground before judging how much has changed.
  • Safe to add to or remove from any world at any time - no world data is involved.
  • If you hear nothing at all, check that the Ambient/Environment volume slider is not turned down.
