Overview#

Bayou Blues transforms the swampy landscapes of Minecraft by adding the Bayou biome. This rare, atmospheric region is characterized by its towering Cypress trees, dense foliage, and unique aquatic plants. The mod focuses on expanding the aesthetic and functional variety of wetlands, providing players with a new wood set, various decorative plants, and a suite of gooseberry-based food items.

The mod is designed to integrate seamlessly with other mods in the Abnormals ecosystem, such as Environmental and Quark, adding specialized content like Slabfish variants and storage blocks when those mods are present.

Biomes#

The Bayou

The Bayou is the central feature of the mod. It is a rare biome that generates with a distinct murky green water color and a dense canopy. Unlike standard swamps, the Bayou is heavily populated with Cypress Trees and Giant Ferns.

  • Flora: Cypress Trees, Beard Moss, Algae, Giant Ferns, and Lily Flowers.
  • Water Features: Patches of Algae and Lily Pads with blooming flowers.
  • Atmosphere: The biome features a unique fog and grass color that distinguishes it from the vanilla Swamp.

Flora and Vegetation#

The Bayou is home to several new plant species, each with unique growth mechanics and uses.

Cypress Trees

Cypress trees are the primary timber source in the Bayou. They generate in two variants: 1x1 trunks and massive 2x2 trunks.

  • Wild Growth: Naturally generated trees are draped in Beard Moss.
  • Saplings: When grown from a sapling, they produce leaves but do not automatically generate Beard Moss.
  • Cypress Knees: These are small wooden protrusions found at the base of Cypress trees. Breaking them yields 1-3 Cypress Logs. Warning: Falling on a Cypress Knee will double the fall damage taken by the player.

Beard Moss

Beard Moss is a decorative plant that hangs from the leaves and branches of Cypress trees.

  • Growth: It slowly grows downward over time. Players can use Bonemeal to accelerate this growth.
  • Harvesting: Must be harvested with Shears to be obtained as an item.

Algae

Algae appears as green patches on the surface of Bayou waters.

  • Propagation: Using Bonemeal on Algae will cause it to spread to adjacent water blocks.
  • Utility: It can be crafted into Algae Thatch for building.

Lily Flowers

Lily Flowers are colorful blooms that grow on top of Lily Pads. They come in several color varieties.

  • Obtaining: Players can obtain a random Lily Flower by using Bonemeal on a standard Lily Pad.
  • Integration: If the Environmental mod is installed, these flowers also generate naturally in the Blossom Woods biome.

Giant Ferns

These large, two-block high ferns provide dense ground cover and are excellent for marshy landscaping.

Blocks#

Cypress Woodset

Cypress wood features a warm, brownish-grey hue. It can be crafted into all standard wooden components:

Block Description
Cypress Log The raw wood harvested from Cypress trees.
Cypress Planks Used for general construction and crafting.
Cypress Stripped Log Created by using an axe on a Cypress Log.
Cypress Wood/Stripped Wood Six-sided bark blocks.
Cypress Stairs/Slabs Standard decorative variants.
Cypress Fence/Gate Standard enclosure blocks.
Cypress Door/Trapdoor Features a unique lattice-like design.
Cypress Sign/Boat Functional wooden items.

Decorative & Functional Blocks

  • Algae Thatch: A dense, fibrous block made from Algae. It is ideal for roofing or hut construction in marshy builds.
  • Gooseberry Sack: (Requires Quark) A storage block for Gooseberries, allowing for compact storage and decorative use in kitchens or markets.

  • Behavior: Like other Slabfish, they are passive aquatic creatures that flop around when on land and can be picked up in a bucket.
  • Drops: They typically drop Slabfish meat or experience when killed.

The Cypress Knee block possesses a unique mechanical property. If an entity (player or mob) falls onto a Cypress Knee, the fall damage calculation is doubled. This makes navigating the floor of a dense Cypress forest potentially hazardous if jumping from high branches.

Bonemeal Interactions

  • Lily Pads: Using bonemeal on a standard Lily Pad will transform it into a Lily Pad with a random colored Lily Flower.
  • Algae: Using bonemeal on Algae in water will cause it to spread to nearby water source blocks.
  • Beard Moss: Using bonemeal on Beard Moss will cause it to grow downward by one block instantly.
