Overview#

Building Gadgets, developed by Direwolf20, is designed to alleviate the tedious nature of large-scale construction in Minecraft. The mod introduces a suite of high-tech tools that allow players to place, replace, and remove blocks in complex patterns and massive volumes with a single click. These tools operate on Forge Energy (FE) and can be configured through an intuitive radial menu and a series of hotkeys. Whether you are building massive walls, intricate floors, or relocating entire structures, Building Gadgets provides the precision and speed required for advanced modded gameplay.

Gadgets#

The mod features five primary tools, each serving a distinct purpose in the construction process. All gadgets require energy to function and can be charged using any standard energy distribution system.

Building Gadget

The Building Gadget is the core tool for placing blocks. It allows players to select a block type by Shift-Right-Clicking a block in the world and then placing that block in various modes. It supports a range of up to 15 blocks (configurable) and consumes 50 FE per block placed.

Exchanging Gadget

The Exchanging Gadget swaps existing blocks in the world with a selected block from the player's inventory. Unlike breaking and replacing manually, this tool is instantaneous and does not drop the original block unless configured otherwise. It is ideal for upgrading the material of a base without dismantling it.

Copy Paste Gadget

This gadget allows players to capture a 3D region and replicate it elsewhere.

  • Copy Mode: Shift-Right-Click two corners to define a region. The selection is highlighted with a green box.
  • Paste Mode: Displays a holographic preview of the structure. Right-clicking places the blocks if the player has the required materials.

Cut Paste Gadget

The Cut Paste Gadget is used for relocating structures. It functions similarly to the Copy Paste Gadget but physically removes the blocks from the original location and stores them within the tool's internal buffer. It preserves block entity data, such as chest contents and machine states. Note: This gadget does not have an Undo function.

Destruction Gadget

The Destruction Gadget is designed for voiding large areas of terrain. It does not drop items, making it perfect for clearing space for a base or digging large pits. It features adjustable dimensions (Depth, Left, Right, Up, Down) and a "Raytrace Fluids" toggle to clear water or lava.

Blocks#

Template Manager

The Template Manager is a utility block used to manage structure data.

  • Saving: Place a Copy Paste Gadget and a piece of Paper/Template item inside to save a structure.
  • Loading: Load a saved Template back into a gadget.
  • Sharing: The GUI provides a "Copy" button that generates a text string of the structure, which can be shared and pasted into the manager by other players.

Construction Block

The Construction Block is a special block generated when using Construction Paste. It can mimic the appearance of any other block. This is useful for building when the player lacks the actual blocks but has a surplus of paste.

Dense Construction Block

Created by placing Construction Powder next to water. Breaking a Dense Construction Block yields 1-3 Construction Paste items.

Items#

Construction Paste

An essential resource for the Building Gadget. When the gadget is set to use paste, it consumes this item to create a Construction Block that mimics the selected block's texture. It is a cost-effective alternative for massive decorative builds.

Template

A paper-like item used in the Template Manager to store structure data. Once a structure is saved to a Template, it can be renamed and stored in chests for future use.

Mechanics & Modes#

Building Modes

Each gadget has several modes accessible via the Radial Menu (Default: G):

Mode Description
Build to Me Builds a line of blocks from the targeted block to the player's position.
Vertical Column Builds a vertical pillar of blocks.
Horizontal Column Builds a horizontal line of blocks.
Vertical Wall Builds a wall facing the player.
Horizontal Wall Builds a floor or ceiling.
Stairs Builds a staircase pattern.
Grid Places blocks in an evenly spaced grid.
Surface Places blocks across the entire surface of the targeted block type.

Keybindings

  • Mode Switch (G): Opens the radial menu for settings and mode selection.
  • Range/Rotate (R): Increases range. Use Shift + R to decrease range or mirror templates.
  • Anchor (H): Locks the holographic preview in place, allowing the player to walk around and inspect the placement before committing.
  • Undo (U): Reverses the last action. The mod stores the last 10 actions by default.
  • Material List (M): While holding a Copy Paste Gadget, displays a list of all materials required to complete the build.

Inventory Binding

Gadgets can be bound to external inventories (like Chests or AE2 Wireless Access Points). To bind, hold the gadget and Shift-Right-Click the target inventory. The gadget will then pull blocks directly from that container instead of the player's inventory.
