Charm of Undying Wiki

A guide to Charm of Undying - the quality-of-life mod that lets you equip the vanilla Totem of Undying in an accessory charm slot so it auto-revives you on lethal damage without ever being held: how to equip it, how the automatic revive works, the required companion accessory mod, configuration, and tips.

Overview#

Charm of Undying is a small quality-of-life mod built around one idea: the Totem of Undying should protect you without eating one of your hands.

In vanilla Minecraft the Totem of Undying only saves you from death if you are actively holding it in your main hand or off-hand. That forces a hard choice - carry a totem and lose a slot for a sword, shield, or tool, or hold your gear and risk dying. Charm of Undying removes that trade-off by adding a dedicated accessory "charm" slot for the totem. Slot a totem there once and it guards you automatically, while both of your hands stay free for combat, mining, or building.

Nothing else about the totem changes - it still revives you once per totem, only when a hit would otherwise kill you, and grants the same recovery effects. It simply works from your charm slot instead of your hand.

Getting Started#

There is nothing to craft and no recipe to unlock - you use an ordinary Totem of Undying.

  1. Get a Totem of Undying the normal way (for example, by defeating a raid captain's illager forces, or through trading and loot on your world).
  2. Open your inventory. With the companion accessory mod installed (see Required Companion Mod), you will see extra accessory slots next to your character model.
  3. Place the totem in the charm slot. Drag the Totem of Undying into the dedicated charm/accessory slot.
  4. You're protected. The totem now stays equipped and will trigger on its own the next time you would die - no need to hold it.

Once equipped you can go about your adventure normally; the charm quietly waits until the moment you need it.

How It Works#

When the totem is in your charm slot, it behaves just like a held Totem of Undying - it just fires from the accessory slot instead of your hand.

  • Automatic trigger. The instant you take damage that would reduce you to zero health, the equipped totem activates on its own.
  • Instant revive. You are pulled back from death, your health is restored to a small amount, and you gain Regeneration, Fire Resistance, and Absorption, exactly like a normal totem save.
  • On-screen animation. The familiar golden totem pop-up and particle burst play so you can clearly see that a life was spent.
  • One totem per save. Each revive consumes one Totem of Undying from the charm slot. Keep a spare if you want repeated protection.
  • Hands stay free. Because the totem lives in the charm slot, you keep your weapon and shield (or any other items) equipped through the whole fight.

This makes the totem reliable in situations where you might not have time to swap it into your hand - falling into lava, ambushes, the Nether, deep caves, or a sudden burst of damage.

Required Companion Mod#

Charm of Undying does not add its own inventory screen from scratch - it plugs a totem slot into an existing accessory (curio) system. Because of that, it needs a companion accessory/curio API mod installed alongside it to provide the charm slot.

  • Install the appropriate accessory/curio API mod for your setup before loading Charm of Undying.
  • With that companion mod present, the extra accessory slots (including the charm slot for the totem) appear in your inventory automatically.
  • Without an accessory/curio API mod, there is no charm slot for the totem to occupy, so the mod cannot work.

If your inventory does not show accessory slots, double-check that a compatible accessory/curio API mod is installed and loading correctly.

Configuration#

Charm of Undying includes configuration options so you can adjust how the charm slot behaves to fit your world.

  • Open the mod's configuration (through your mod list's config screen or the generated config file).
  • Typical options let you fine-tune the totem-slot behavior and how the automatic revive is handled.
  • Adjust the settings, save, and the changes apply to how your equipped totem protects you.

The defaults are tuned to mirror the vanilla totem experience, so most players can leave the configuration untouched and simply enjoy hands-free protection.

Tips#

  • Always keep a totem charmed. Slot a Totem of Undying as soon as you get one so you are protected before trouble starts.
  • Carry spares. The charm consumes one totem per revive - keep extras in your inventory to re-equip after a save.
  • Free your hands for fights. The whole point is keeping a sword and shield ready, so take advantage of it in raids, boss fights, and PvP.
  • Great for hardcore and dangerous biomes. Hands-free protection shines in the Nether, deep caves, and near lava where a surprise hit can be fatal.
  • Watch for the animation. When you see the golden totem pop, a life was spent - re-slot a fresh totem right away.
  • Check your slots after adding mods. If the charm slot disappears, verify your accessory/curio API companion mod is still installed.

FAQ & Troubleshooting#

Do I need to craft anything? No. You use an ordinary Totem of Undying and simply place it in the charm accessory slot.

Do I still have to hold the totem? No - that's the whole point. Once it's in the charm slot it protects you automatically with both hands free.

Does it change how the totem revives me? No. You get the same instant revive plus Regeneration, Fire Resistance, and Absorption as a normal totem save; it just triggers from the charm slot.

How many times can it save me? Once per totem. Each revive uses up one Totem of Undying, so keep spares if you want repeated protection.

Why don't I see a charm slot? The mod needs a companion accessory/curio API mod to provide the slot. Make sure one is installed and loading, then reopen your inventory.

Does it work on multiplayer servers? Yes. The equipped totem protects you the same way in single-player and on servers.
