Overview#

Cold Sweat is a highly immersive survival mod that introduces a dynamic temperature system to Minecraft. It challenges players to manage their body heat in response to biomes, weather, altitude, and nearby heat or cold sources. Unlike simple environmental mods, Cold Sweat integrates deeply with Vanilla mechanics, allowing players to insulate their favorite armor, use portable temperature regulators, and even tame unique creatures to help navigate extreme climates.

Core Concepts

  • Body Temperature: Your internal heat level, displayed as a gauge next to the hotbar. Staying at extreme levels for too long leads to negative status effects and eventually death.
  • World Temperature: The ambient temperature of your current location, influenced by the biome, time of day, weather, and proximity to blocks like lava or ice.
  • Habituation: A mechanic where players gradually become more resistant to the temperatures they frequently inhabit.

Temperature Mechanics#

The mod calculates temperature based on a variety of environmental factors. Understanding these is key to survival.

Factor Effect on Temperature
Biomes Deserts and the Nether are scorching; Tundras and Peaks are freezing.
Time of Day Temperatures drop significantly at night and peak during midday.
Altitude Higher altitudes (mountains) are colder; deep underground areas are warmer.
Weather Rain and snow cool the player down and increase the rate of freezing.
Blocks Proximity to lava, fire, or lit furnaces provides heat. Ice and snow provide cooling.
Wetness Being in water or rain makes the player 'Wet', which drastically increases cooling speed.

Status Effects

  • Freezing: Occurs when body temperature is too low. Symptoms include slower movement, reduced attack knockback, stunted health regeneration, and eventually continuous damage.
  • Overheating: Occurs when body temperature is too high. Symptoms include blurred vision, heat fog, camera swaying, and rapid health loss.

Mobs#

Chameleon

The Chameleon is a passive mob added by Cold Sweat that serves as a living thermometer and guide.

  • Spawn: Tropical biomes (Jungles) and arid biomes (Deserts).
  • Behavior: Changes its skin color to match the ambient temperature. It can be tamed by feeding it Spider Eyes or Raw Fish (1 in 3 chance).
  • Utility:
    • Riding: A tamed Chameleon can be right-clicked to sit on the player's head. It shares the player's damage immunities (except fall damage).
    • Shedding: Chameleons naturally shed their skin once per day, dropping Chameleon Molt.
    • Navigation: Feeding a tamed Chameleon specific items makes its tail point toward a biome type for 5 minutes:
    • Hot Biomes: Dead Bush, Nether Wart, or Cactus.
    • Cold Biomes: Snowball, Beetroot, or Sweet Berries.
    • Humid Biomes: Slimeball, Ink Sac, or Cocoa Beans.

Items#

Cold Sweat adds several tools and materials to help manage temperature.

Item Description
Thermometer Displays the exact world temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius. Can be held or placed in an item frame.
Waterskin Can be filled with water and then heated in a Boiler or cooled in an Icebox. Holding or drinking from it provides temporary temperature relief.
Soulspring Lamp A portable cooling device fueled by Soul Sprouts. Essential for surviving the Nether.
Soul Sprout Found growing on Soul Sand in the Nether. Used as fuel for the Soulspring Lamp or brewed into Ice Resistance potions.
Chameleon Molt Dropped by Chameleons. Used for crafting adaptive insulation and the Thermolith.
Goat Fur Obtained by shearing goats. Provides high-tier cold insulation.
Hoglin Hide Dropped by Hoglins. Provides high-tier heat insulation.

Specialized Armor

  • Goat Fur Armor: High cold resistance; prevents sinking in powder snow.
  • Hoglin Hide Armor: High heat resistance; makes Piglins neutral and protects against magma blocks.
  • Chameleon Scale Armor: Adapts to the environment, providing 50% effectiveness for both heat and cold protection.

Blocks#

Temperature Control Blocks

Hearth

The Hearth is the ultimate base temperature regulator. It requires a roof to function and can cover a large radius.

  • Heating: Powered from the back/bottom with hot fuel (Coal, Lava, etc.).
  • Cooling: Powered from the sides with cold fuel (Ice, Snow, etc.).
  • Automation: Can be automated using Redstone and pipes (compatible with mods like Create).

Boiler & Icebox

  • Boiler: Heats up to 9 Waterskins simultaneously. Can also provide area warmth if a Smokestack is placed on top.
  • Icebox: Cools up to 9 Waterskins. Can provide area cooling with a Smokestack.

Sewing Table

Used to apply insulation to any piece of armor.

  • Usage: Place armor in the left slot and an insulation item (Wool, Fur, Hide, etc.) in the right slot.
  • Removal: Use Shears in the Sewing Table to remove existing insulation.

Thermolith

A Redstone component that emits a signal based on the surrounding temperature. Useful for automated climate control systems.

Insulation System#

The insulation system allows players to upgrade their existing armor (including modded armor) to handle extreme environments. Each armor piece has a limited number of slots for insulation.

Insulation Type Items Used Effect
Cold Insulation Wool, Goat Fur Reduces the rate of freezing.
Heat Insulation Rabbit Hide, Hoglin Hide Reduces the rate of overheating.
Neutral Insulation Leather Provides moderate protection against both heat and cold.
Adaptive Insulation Chameleon Molt Automatically adjusts to provide the necessary protection (75% effectiveness).

Recipes#

While JEI is recommended for exact layouts, here are the primary crafting components:

  • Thermometer: 2 Gold Ingots + 3 Redstone Dust.
  • Waterskin: 2 Leather + 1 String (yields 2).
  • Hearth: 1 Smokestack + 1 Soul Sand + 2 Iron Ingots + 4 Nether Bricks.
  • Soulspring Lamp: 1 Heart of the Sea + 1 Gold Nugget + 2 Iron Ingots + 1 Chain.
  • Sewing Table: 2 Wood Slabs + 2 Planks + 2 String.
  • Ice Resistance Potion: Awkward Potion + Soul Sprout (Brewing Stand).

Commands & Configuration#

Cold Sweat is highly configurable via the cold_sweat-common.toml file and JSON datapacks.

Commands

  • /temp <player> get <body/world>: Checks the temperature of a player.
  • /temp <player> set <body/world> <value>: Manually sets a player's temperature.
  • /temp <player> add <body/world> <value>: Modifies a player's temperature by a specific amount.

Configuration Options

  • Temperature Scales: Toggle between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
  • Damage: Adjust how much damage freezing or overheating deals.
  • Grace Period: Set a timer for how long new players are immune to temperature effects.
  • Block Temperatures: Custom JSON files can be used to define exactly how much heat or cold any block (including modded ones) emits.
