Overview#
Dragon Mounts Legacy is a modern continuation of the classic Dragon Mounts mod, allowing players to hatch the previously decorative Ender Dragon egg into a variety of elemental companions. These dragons are not merely pets; they are powerful mounts capable of flight, combat, and unique environmental interactions. The mod utilizes a sophisticated breed system where the environment in which an egg is placed determines the type of dragon that emerges.

Obtaining a Dragon Egg#
The journey begins with acquiring a Dragon Egg. In standard survival gameplay, this is achieved by defeating the Ender Dragon in The End. Once the dragon is defeated, the egg appears on the exit portal.
- Collection: To collect the egg without it teleporting, players should place a piston facing the egg and activate it, or dig two blocks down and place a torch under the block the egg is sitting on, then break the supporting block.
- Alternative Sources: Depending on world configuration or added structures, dragon eggs may occasionally be found in rare dungeon chests or temple loot.
Hatching and Breeds#
To hatch a dragon, place the egg on the ground and Right-Click it. This starts the incubation process, which takes approximately 600 seconds (10 minutes). During this time, the egg will emit particles. If you wish to pause the process, Left-Click the egg to pick it back up; the progress will be saved.
Dragon Breeds and Conditions
The breed of the dragon is determined by the blocks surrounding the egg or the altitude at which it is placed. To ensure a specific breed, surround the egg in a 3x3 area with the required materials.
| Breed | Environment / Blocks Required | Unique Traits |
|---|---|---|
| Ender Dragon | End Stone or default conditions | The classic purple-eyed dragon. |
| Fire Dragon | Lava, Magma Blocks, or Fire | Immune to fire and lava damage. |
| Water Dragon | Submerged in Water | Can swim and breathe underwater. |
| Ice Dragon | Snow, Ice, or Packed Ice | Turns water beneath its feet into ice. |
| Forest Dragon | Leaves, Grass, or Flowers | Spawns flora as it walks; heals in forests. |
| Nether Dragon | Blackstone, Basalt, or Soul Sand | High health; immune to fire. |
| Aether (Ethereal) | Altitude above Y=200 | Flies faster than other breeds. |
| Ghost (Abyssal) | Altitude below Y=0 and Light Level 0 | Transparent appearance; high attack power. |

Taming and Growth#
Once the egg hatches, a baby dragon (hatchling) will emerge. It is vulnerable and must be tamed immediately to prevent it from wandering off or attacking livestock.
- Taming: Feed the hatchling Raw Salmon or Raw Cod. It typically takes between 10 to 20 fish to successfully tame a dragon. Hearts will appear above its head once tamed.
- Growth Stages: Dragons progress through four stages: Egg, Hatchling, Juvenile, and Adult.
- Accelerating Growth: While dragons grow naturally over time, you can speed up the process by feeding them more raw fish.
- Healing: If your dragon takes damage, feed it any type of Raw or Cooked Meat (Beef, Chicken, Porkchops) to restore its health.
Riding and Controls#
Only Adult dragons can be ridden. To ride your dragon, you must first equip it with a Saddle (standard Minecraft Saddle).
Flight Controls
Once mounted (Right-Click), use the following controls to navigate:
- W/A/S/D: Standard movement (steer with mouse).
- Spacebar: Fly upward / Ascend.
- Z or Y: Fly downward / Descend (Keybind is configurable in options).
- Shift: Dismount. Warning: Do not dismount while high in the air, as you will take fall damage.
- F6: Toggle between "Mouse Look" flight and "Keyboard" flight modes (in some versions).

Dragon Behavior and Commands#
Tamed dragons behave similarly to wolves but with significantly more power.
- Following: By default, a tamed dragon will follow its owner and teleport if the distance becomes too great.
- Sitting: To make a dragon stay in one place, Right-Click with a Bone or Sneak + Right-Click with an empty hand.
- Combat: Dragons will defend their owner against hostile mobs. Their attacks include physical bites and, depending on the breed, elemental breath or status effects.
- Breeding: Two tamed adult dragons can be bred by feeding them raw fish. They will produce a new egg that inherits the breed of one of the parents.
Items and Crafting#
While the mod primarily focuses on the dragons themselves, several items are essential for their management.
| Item | Function | Crafting / Acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Egg | The base for all dragons | Defeat the Ender Dragon |
| Saddle | Required to ride adult dragons | Found in chests or via Fishing/Trading |
| Raw Fish | Used for taming and growth | Fishing in any water body |
| Dragon Whistle | Used to command dragons from a distance | Craft with a Stick and a Dragon Scale (if enabled) |
Note: Some versions of the mod allow for the crafting of Dragon Armor to increase the mount's defense, though this is often a feature of specific sub-addons.
Commands#
For administrators or players with cheats enabled, the /dragon command allows for direct manipulation of dragon entities.
/dragon stage <hatchling|juvenile|adult>: Instantly sets the growth stage of the dragon you are looking at./dragon breed <breed_name>: Changes the breed of the dragon (e.g.,/dragon breed fire)./dragon tame: Instantly tames the dragon for the player.
