Librarian’s Balance Data Pack (1.21.10, 1.20.1) is a datapack or mod that enhances the progression of obtaining enchantments from villagers. It introduces a system where librarians can resell duplicate enchanted books that the player already owns, creating a more balanced and progressive approach to enchantment trading.

Normally, players need two identical enchanted books to upgrade an enchantment level in an anvil. With this datapack, librarians now sell duplicates of your owned books in exchange for emeralds. By combining these books in an anvil, players can upgrade enchantments step by step, from Level 1 to Level 5, through trading and experience investment rather than relying solely on random trades.

The maximum random enchanted book level offered by new librarians is limited to Level 3, encouraging players to use the new trading mechanic for higher levels.

Features:

  • Customisable Trades: Place an enchanted book on a librarian’s lectern to change their first or second trade to match that book. This gives purpose to found books. Treasure enchantments produce sealed, untradable variants when traded this way.
  • Limited Random Trades: Random librarian trades go only up to Level 3. To obtain Level 4 or 5, use the custom trade mechanic — purchase a duplicate, combine it in an anvil, and reinsert it into the trade cycle.
  • Rare Mending: Librarians cannot trade Mending by default. Players must first find it in End Cities or Ancient Cities (similar rarity to armor trims). Once found, it can be traded via the lectern system.

Configuration: Use the command /function libal:config (requires OP) to toggle or configure all features. To disable loot table changes, delete the loot_table folder inside the datapack.

Usage: Ideal for survival multiplayer servers where enchantment progression feels too fast. This system balances progress using experience, emeralds, and exploration.

Compatibility: Works with the Amendments mod and fully supports the Tome Reader mod (1.21–1.21.1), which improves book placement and enchantment transfer. Compatible with Mojang’s Villager Rebalance experimental feature (not required).

Notes:

  • Occasional UI glitches may display invalid trades (e.g., Mending or >Level 3). These are visual only.
  • If issues occur, run /function libal:load to refresh the datapack.
  • Ensure the datapack is not unzipped in the folder.
