Overview#

Mutant Beasts is the spiritual successor and modern port of the legendary Mutant Creatures mod. It introduces monstrous, mutated versions of classic Minecraft mobs, each serving as a formidable mini-boss with unique attack patterns, massive health pools, and legendary loot. Unlike standard mobs, these beasts require strategy and specialized equipment to defeat. The mod also brings back the iconic Chemical X, the catalyst for these mutations, allowing players to create their own monstrosities or loyal allies.

Core Mechanics: Chemical X#

Chemical X is the central item of the mod, used to induce mutations in ordinary mobs.

How to Use

To mutate a mob, throw the Chemical X splash potion at a valid target (Zombie, Skeleton, Creeper, Enderman, or Snow Golem).

  • Mutation Chance: 50%
  • Death Chance: 50% (The mob will explode and die if the mutation fails)

Brewing Recipe

Chemical X is created by brewing Obsidian into a Thick Potion (or a Water Bottle in some versions) using a Brewing Stand. In the 1.16.5 version, it can also be crafted using 4 Obsidian blocks surrounding a Water Bottle in a crafting grid.

Mutant Mobs (Bosses)#

These are the primary threats added by the mod. They do not spawn naturally by default in early versions but can be created using Chemical X.

Mob Health Primary Drops Behavior
Mutant Zombie 150 (x75) Hulk Hammer A hulking brute that uses shockwaves and throws players.
Mutant Skeleton 150 (x75) Skeleton Parts A master archer with multi-shot and rib-crush attacks.
Mutant Creeper 120 (x60) Creeper Egg High-jumping explosive beast that summons minions.
Mutant Enderman 200 (x100) Endersoul Hand Teleports blocks, creates clones, and causes blindness.
Mutant Snow Golem 80 (x40) Snowballs/Ice A friendly giant that throws ice blocks at enemies.

Mutant Zombie

  • Attacks: Ground Smash (AOE), Grab & Throw, and Roar (summons 6 regular zombies).
  • Special Mechanic: It has 3 lives. When its health reaches zero, it falls over. You must burn it with Flint and Steel before it gets back up, or it will revive with partial health.

Mutant Skeleton

  • Attacks: Multi-Arrow Volley (6 arrows), Melee Punch, and Rib Cage Constrict (pulls players in and crushes them).
  • Death: Upon death, it explodes into various bone parts that the player must right-click to collect for crafting armor.

Mutant Creeper

  • Attacks: Jump Smash (massive explosion), Charge (increases speed), and Summon Minions.
  • Death: It creates a massive explosion upon death, leaving behind a Creeper Egg.

Mutant Enderman

  • Attacks: Block Toss (throws up to 4 blocks), Endersoul Clone (creates 8 decoys), and Screech (deals damage and applies Nausea/Blindness).
  • Passive: It is neutral until provoked but much more aggressive than a standard Enderman.

Minions & Hybrids#

Creeper Minion

Creeper Minions are hatched from the Creeper Egg dropped by a Mutant Creeper.

  • Taming: They are born tamed to the player who hatched them.
  • Utility: They will fight for the player and can be commanded to stay or follow. They do not explode unless commanded or if their health is low.

Spider-Pig

  • Creation: Feed a regular Pig a Fermented Spider Eye, then splash it with Chemical X.
  • Stats: 50 Health (25 hearts).
  • Taming: To tame a Spider-Pig, reduce its health to below 10% (4 hearts) and then kill a tamed Creeper Minion near it. It will consume the minion and become tamed.
  • Abilities: Can be ridden (requires a saddle), climbs walls, and is immune to poison.

Items & Equipment#

Legendary Weapons

  • Hulk Hammer: Dropped by the Mutant Zombie. It has 64 durability and deals 9 damage. Right-clicking the ground performs a shockwave attack that knocks back all nearby mobs.
  • Creeper Shard: Obtained by breaking a Creeper Egg. Right-clicking causes a localized explosion that does not damage the player but deals high damage to mobs.
  • Endersoul Hand: Dropped by the Mutant Enderman. Allows the player to pick up and throw blocks, similar to the Mutant Enderman's attack. It also allows for short-range teleportation.

Mutant Skeleton Armor

Crafted from the parts dropped by a Mutant Skeleton. Each piece provides unique buffs:

  • Skeleton Helmet: Double critical damage for mid-air bow shots; however, ground shots deal half damage.
  • Skeleton Chestplate: Bows charge 4x faster.
  • Skeleton Leggings: Provides a significant Speed II boost.
  • Skeleton Boots: Provides a Jump Boost effect.

Utility Items

  • Creeper Minion Tracker: Crafted with 4 Iron Ingots. Used to track the location of your Creeper Minions and toggle their behavior (e.g., whether they should destroy blocks).

Mechanics & Configuration#

Spawning

In the default configuration for 1.16.5, Mutant Beasts do not spawn naturally to prevent world-breaking issues. They must be created using Chemical X. However, natural spawn rates can be enabled and adjusted in the mutantbeasts-common.toml config file.

Commands

  • /mutantbeasts spawn [mob_name] - Spawns a specific mutant at the player's location.
  • /mutantbeasts killall - Removes all active mutant entities from the loaded chunks.
