Overview#

Neapolitan is a food-focused mod designed by Team Abnormals that moves away from simple hunger restoration in favor of a "flavor-based" progression system. Instead of just filling a hunger bar, the foods in Neapolitan provide unique status effects that encourage exploration and strategic consumption. The mod adds several new crops, decorative blocks, and mobs that integrate seamlessly into the vanilla Minecraft experience.

Currently, the mod features six core flavors:

  • Chocolate: Focused on speed and industry.
  • Vanilla: Focused on stealth and protection.
  • Strawberry: Focused on healing and vitality.
  • Banana: Focused on mobility and agility.
  • Mint: Focused on combat and aggression.
  • Adzuki: Focused on harmony and defense.

Flavors and Status Effects#

The heart of Neapolitan is its status effect system. Each flavor grants a specific buff, and some come with a secondary "crash" or trade-off.

Flavor Status Effect Effect Description
Chocolate Sugar Rush Increases movement speed and mining speed. When it expires, it inflicts Sugar Crash (Slowness and Mining Fatigue).
Vanilla Vanilla Scent Prevents new potion effects from being applied and makes mobs ignore the player while standing still or sneaking.
Strawberry Healing Instantly restores a small amount of health (0.5 to 1 heart) regardless of hunger levels.
Banana Agility Allows the player to climb vertical surfaces (walls and blocks) as if they were ladders.
Mint Berserking Increases attack damage and defense. The effect level increases with every hostile mob killed during the duration.
Adzuki Harmony Wards off hostile mobs, causing them to stay at a distance and refrain from attacking unless provoked.
Banana Peel Slipping A debuff that causes the player to slide uncontrollably and move in random directions.

Plants and Ingredients#

To craft the various treats, players must find and cultivate specific plants found across different biomes.

Strawberry Bushes

Found in Plains biomes. They grow in patches and can be harvested by right-clicking.

  • White Strawberries: If grown at high altitudes (above Y=200), strawberries turn white. These restore more health but cannot be used in standard recipes.
  • Pips: Breaking a bush or crafting a strawberry yields pips, which are used to replant the bushes.

Vanilla Vines

Found in Savanna biomes. They grow on trees in various orientations.

  • Toxic Sap: Breaking vanilla vines without Shears will inflict a poison-like lingering effect.
  • Vanilla Pods: These must be smelted in a furnace to create Dried Vanilla Pods, the primary ingredient for vanilla-flavored foods.

Banana Plants

Found in Jungles and Beaches.

  • Growth: Banana fronds can be planted on sand or gravel. They require rain to grow into full banana plants.
  • Banana Bundles: These hang from the plants. Breaking them yields banana bunches, which can be peeled into individual bananas.

Mint

Found in Mountain biomes, typically near small ponds.

  • Low Light Growth: Mint requires light levels between 7 and 14 to grow.
  • Growth Support: Mature mint plants sparkle and slightly increase the growth rate of adjacent non-mint crops.

Adzuki Beans

Found in Forest biomes.

  • Adzuki Soil: Planting beans on grass or dirt converts the block into Adzuki Soil, which sprouts beans over several growth cycles before reverting to dirt.
  • Fertilization: Peaceful mobs walking through Adzuki plants will fertilize them, increasing yield.

Mobs#

Neapolitan adds unique creatures that interact with the new food items.

Chimpanzee

  • Spawn: Jungles and Bamboo Jungles.
  • Behavior: Neutral mobs that live in large groups. They are highly curious and will interact with items on the ground. They love bananas and will actively seek out banana bundles to shake them for food.
  • Combat: If attacked, the entire troop will swarm the aggressor. They are scared of loud noises like fireworks and lightning.
  • Variants: Chimpanzees have different textures based on their home biome (Jungle, Bamboo Jungle, or Rainforest if the Atmospheric mod is installed).

Plantain Spider

  • Spawn: Occasionally emerges when a Banana Bundle is broken.
  • Behavior: Hostile. They are roughly the size of cave spiders and have a distinct creeper-face pattern on their abdomen.
  • Attack: Their bite inflicts the Slipping effect, making it difficult for the player to maneuver or land counter-attacks.

Food Items#

The mod introduces several tiers of confectionery, each providing the flavor's signature effect.

Ice Cream

Ice cream is the primary way to gain long-lasting buffs. It is crafted in a bowl and comes in scoops, cones, and blocks.

  • Recipe Pattern: 1 Bowl + 1 Dried Vanilla Pod + 1 Milk Bottle + 1 Ice Cube + 2 Flavor Items (e.g., 2 Chocolate Bars for Chocolate Ice Cream).
  • Ice Cubes: Obtained by breaking Ice blocks with a pickaxe.

Milkshakes

Milkshakes are drinkable items that provide a buff and interact with existing status effects.

  • Vanilla Milkshake: Clears all status effects (like a milk bucket).
  • Strawberry Milkshake: Clears only positive status effects.
  • Chocolate Milkshake: Clears only negative status effects.
  • Banana Milkshake: Swaps status effects with the nearest entity.
  • Mint Milkshake: Steals status effects from the nearest entity.

Cakes

Flavor-specific cakes can be placed as blocks and eaten in slices. They are crafted by replacing the milk and wheat in a standard cake recipe with flavor ingredients (e.g., Strawberries or Chocolate Bars).

Cookies

Neapolitan tweaks cookies to be eaten much faster than other foods. It adds flavor variants like Chocolate Chip, Strawberry, and Banana cookies.

Blocks and Decoration#

Beyond food, the mod adds various building and storage blocks.

  • Chocolate Blocks: Crafted from 9 Chocolate Bars. Can be processed into Chocolate Bricks, Tiles, and Chiseled variants. These include stairs, slabs, and walls.
  • Ice Cream Blocks: Decorative blocks that look like giant scoops of ice cream. They have a slight "slippery" property similar to ice.
  • Banana Stalks: A wood-like block harvested from banana plants. Can be crafted into decorative "Carved" variants.
  • Storage Blocks: If the Quark mod is installed, Neapolitan adds Baskets and Crates for strawberries, bananas, and other crops for compact storage.
  • Magic Beanstalk: Created by planting Magic Beans (3 Adzuki Beans + 1 Fermented Spider Eye). It grows into a massive tower of Beanstalk Blocks and Thorns.

Mechanics and Recipes#

Milk Bottling

Players can now use a Glass Bottle on a cow to receive a Milk Bottle. Unlike Milk Buckets, Milk Bottles are stackable (up to 16), making them much more efficient for crafting and clearing effects.

Chocolate Crafting

Chocolate is not found in the wild but must be manufactured:

  • Chocolate Bar: 1 Milk Bottle + 2 Cocoa Beans + 1 Sugar.

Bananarrows

Crafted by combining an Arrow with a Banana.

  • Effect: Shooting a mob with a Bananarrow inflicts the Slipping effect and provokes nearby Chimpanzees to attack that specific mob, allowing players to direct a "monkey army."

Banana Peels

Right-clicking a Banana Bunch yields bananas and a Banana Peel. Peels can be placed on the ground; any entity that walks over them will receive the Slipping effect and slide forward.
