Overview#

Oreberries is a specialized utility mod for Minecraft that restores the beloved oreberry bush mechanics originally found in older versions of Tinkers' Construct. As Tinkers' Construct moved to newer versions, this feature was removed, but this mod brings it back as a standalone experience.

The mod introduces various bushes that naturally generate in the dark corners of the Overworld. These bushes grow metallic berries that can be harvested and smelted into nuggets, providing a renewable, albeit slow, source of ores. Additionally, it includes Essence Berries, which serve as a unique way to farm and store experience points. These bushes are a staple for players who enjoy automation and underground farming.

Blocks: Oreberry Bushes#

The core of the mod consists of six types of bushes. Each bush has three stages of growth: small, medium, and mature. Only the mature stage produces a harvestable berry.

Bush Types and Properties

Bush Type Harvested Berry Smelting Output Spawn Height (Y)
Iron Oreberry Bush Iron Oreberry Iron Nugget 0 - 64
Gold Oreberry Bush Gold Oreberry Gold Nugget 0 - 32
Copper Oreberry Bush Copper Oreberry Copper Nugget 0 - 64
Tin Oreberry Bush Tin Oreberry Tin Nugget 0 - 48
Aluminum Oreberry Bush Aluminum Oreberry Aluminum Nugget 0 - 64
Essence Berry Bush Essence Berry N/A (XP) 0 - 32

Behavior and Hazards

  • Damage: Much like a cactus, oreberry bushes are prickly. Walking through or standing inside a bush deals 1 heart (2 health points) of damage per tick. This damage ignores most armor, making them effective for basic mob traps.
  • Placement: Bushes can be planted on any solid, opaque block (Stone, Dirt, Cobblestone, etc.). Once placed, the supporting block can be removed, and the bush will remain floating or can be stacked vertically.
  • Harvesting: Players can harvest berries by right-clicking a mature bush. Breaking the bush will drop the bush item itself, allowing for relocation.

Items: Berries and Essence#

Berries are the primary output of the bushes. While metallic berries are used for resource production, Essence Berries are used for character progression.

Metallic Berries

Metallic berries (Iron, Gold, Copper, Tin, and Aluminum) are primarily used as a source of nuggets.

  • Processing: Each berry can be smelted in a standard Furnace or any modded machine that accepts smelting recipes to produce one nugget of the corresponding metal.
  • Efficiency: It takes 9 berries to produce a single ingot.

Essence Berries

Essence Berries are glowing green berries that contain concentrated experience.

  • Usage: Right-clicking with an Essence Berry in hand consumes it and grants the player a random amount of experience (typically 1 to 6 XP).
  • Concentrated Essence Berry: By crafting 9 Essence Berries together, players can create a Concentrated Essence Berry. This item provides significantly more experience when consumed and is more space-efficient for storage.

Mechanics#

To successfully farm oreberries, players must adhere to specific environmental requirements.

Light Level Requirements

Oreberry bushes are cave-dwelling plants and thrive in the dark.

  • Placement: Metallic oreberry bushes can only be placed in areas with a light level of 12 or lower.
  • Growth: For a bush to progress through its growth stages and produce berries, the light level must be below 10. If the area is too bright, the bush will remain stagnant.
  • Exception: Essence Berry Bushes are unique; they do not have light level constraints and can grow in full daylight or total darkness.

Growth Stages

  1. Small: The bush is a small, leafy sprout.
  2. Medium: The bush grows to nearly a full block size but has no visible berries.
  3. Mature: Small metallic or glowing dots appear on the bush texture. At this stage, the bush can be harvested.

Automation

Because berries are harvested via right-click, they are highly compatible with automation mods. Machines like the Autonomous Activator (Thermal Expansion) or the Harvester (MineFactory Reloaded/Industrial Foregoing) can be used to create fully automated ore and XP farms.

World Generation#

Oreberry bushes generate naturally during world creation. They are found exclusively in underground caverns and ravines.

  • Location: They typically spawn attached to the ceiling or floor of caves.
  • Clusters: They often appear in small clusters of 2 to 5 bushes.
  • Rarity: Gold and Essence bushes are significantly rarer than Iron or Copper bushes.
  • Villager Trading: In some configurations, the Tinker Villager (found in villages) may offer oreberry bushes in exchange for emeralds, providing an alternative way to obtain them without extensive caving.

Recipes#

The mod focuses on simple processing recipes.

Configuration#

The mod is highly customizable through its configuration files, typically located in the /config/ folder of your Minecraft instance.

  • oreberries.cfg: Allows players to toggle the generation of specific bush types, adjust the growth speed (tick rate), and enable or disable the ability to use Bone Meal on bushes.
  • oreberries.json: A more advanced file used to define custom oreberry types. Users can add support for ores from other mods (like Lead, Silver, or Nickel) by defining the berry name, color, and smelting output in this file.
  • Light Levels: The maximum light level for growth can be adjusted if players prefer to grow their bushes in well-lit greenhouses rather than dark rooms.
