Overview#
Ores Above Diamonds (OAD) is designed for players who find the endgame of Minecraft too easily reachable. It adds two new tiers of materials—Amethyst and Black Opal—which are significantly rarer than diamonds but offer vastly superior stats. The mod also features a unique 'Netherite Opal' tier, which combines the properties of Black Opal with the lava-resistance of Netherite.
Key features include a specialized enchantment transfer system via the Smithing Table, customizable ore rarity through configuration files, and armor that scales its protection based on the severity of incoming damage.
Ores and Blocks#
The mod introduces two primary ores found deep within the overworld. These ores can be identified by their distinct colors and provide tooltips regarding their spawn statistics when hovered over in inventories.
Amethyst Ore
- Rarity: Approximately 3x rarer than Diamond.
- Spawn Height: Typically found below Y=16 (or within Deepslate layers in 1.18+).
- Mining Level: Requires a Diamond Pickaxe or better.
- Drops: Drops 1 Amethyst gem (affected by Fortune).
Black Opal Ore

- Rarity: Approximately 9x rarer than Diamond.
- Spawn Height: Found in the deepest layers of the world, usually below Y=16.
- Mining Level: Requires an Amethyst Pickaxe or better.
- Drops: Drops 1 Black Opal gem (affected by Fortune).
Storage Blocks
Both gems can be crafted into decorative storage blocks using a 3x3 grid of the respective gems. These blocks can also be crafted back into 9 gems.
| Block | Ingredients | Blast Resistance | Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amethyst Block | 9x Amethyst | 6.0 | 5.0 |
| Black Opal Block | 9x Black Opal | 12.0 | 10.0 |
Items and Materials#
The primary items added are the raw gems used for crafting the highest-tier equipment in the game.
- Amethyst: A purple gemstone used to bridge the gap between Diamond and Black Opal.
- Black Opal: A dark, iridescent gemstone used for the strongest base-game equipment.
- Netherite Opal: Not a standalone gem, but a material state achieved by upgrading Black Opal gear with Netherite.
Equipment Statistics#
The tools and armor provided by Ores Above Diamonds are significantly more powerful than vanilla counterparts.
Tool Stats
| Material | Durability | Efficiency | Attack Damage | Enchantability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond | 1,561 | 8.0 | 3.0 | 10 |
| Amethyst | 3,122 | 12.0 | 4.0 | 25 |
| Black Opal | 6,244 | 16.0 | 5.0 | 30 |
| Netherite Opal | 8,000+ | 20.0 | 6.0 | 35 |
Armor Stats
Armor in this mod utilizes a unique scaling system. While the 'Armor Points' (the chestplate icons) remain capped at 20, the 'Armor Toughness' is significantly higher, allowing the armor to maintain its effectiveness even against high-damage attacks that would normally pierce through Diamond armor.
| Set | Armor Points | Armor Toughness | Knockback Resistance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amethyst | 20 | 8.0 | 0 |
| Black Opal | 20 | 16.0 | 0 |
| Netherite Opal | 20 | 20.0 | 4.0 |
Mechanics#
Smithing Table Enchantment Transfers
OAD allows players to upgrade their gear without losing expensive enchantments. This is done via the Smithing Table. There are four tiers of material progression:
- Diamond
- Amethyst
- Black Opal
- Netherite Opal
Transfer Rules:
- Diamond to Amethyst: Place a Diamond tool/armor piece in the first slot and an Amethyst tool/armor piece in the second slot. The enchantments will transfer to the Amethyst item.
- Amethyst to Black Opal: Place Amethyst gear in the first slot and Black Opal gear in the second slot.
- Black Opal to Netherite Opal: Combine Black Opal gear with a Netherite Ingot in the Smithing Table. This adds lava resistance and a power buff.
- Netherite to Netherite Opal: Combine Netherite gear with Black Opal gear to skip directly to the final tier.
Armor Strength Scaling
The effectiveness of OAD armor depends on the damage per hit. Against weak mobs, the difference between Diamond and Black Opal is negligible. However, against bosses or high-damage sources (like Creepers or modded bosses), Black Opal and Netherite Opal provide exponentially more protection due to their high Toughness values.
Chest Loot
In versions prior to 1.17, Amethyst and Black Opal gems, and rarely full tools, can be found in any vanilla loot chest that contains Diamonds (e.g., End Cities, Bastions, Strongholds) at a reduced spawn rate.
Recipes#
All Amethyst and Black Opal tools and armor follow the standard vanilla crafting shapes using their respective gems and sticks.
- Pickaxe: 3x Gem + 2x Stick
- Sword: 2x Gem + 1x Stick
- Chestplate: 8x Gem
- Netherite Opal Upgrade:
- Input 1: Black Opal Tool/Armor
- Input 2: Netherite Ingot
- Result: Netherite Opal Tool/Armor (Lava Resistant)
