Probably Chests enhances the discovery aspect of Minecraft by replacing the standard, uniform chests found in the world with unique, biome-specific variants. However, exploration becomes more dangerous with the addition of Mimics—hostile creatures that disguise themselves as chests to ambush unsuspecting players. Chest Variants#

The mod adds nine unique chest types that generate naturally across the world. Each chest is designed to match the atmosphere of its respective biome or dimension. Some chests, like the Gold and Void variants, are locked by default and require specific keys to open.

Biome Chests Showcase

The Mimic (Mob)#

Mimics are the primary threat introduced by the mod. They are hostile entities that perfectly mimic the appearance of any chest type. A Mimic remains motionless until a player attempts to open it or break it, at which point it reveals its sharp teeth and attacks.

Behavior

  • Ambush: Mimics stay idle and are indistinguishable from regular chests until interacted with.
  • Movement: They move by hopping aggressively toward the player, similar to Slimes or Magma Cubes.
  • Retreat: If a Mimic cannot reach its target for a period of time, it may return to its chest form to wait for another opportunity.
  • Detection: While they look identical to chests, players may notice subtle differences in placement or use a Suspicious Key to force a transformation.

Mimic Combat

Pet Mimics#

One of the most unique features of the mod is the ability to tame Mimics. Once tamed, a Mimic becomes a loyal companion that follows the player and provides mobile storage.

Taming and Care

  • Taming: Use a Friendly Key on a Wild Mimic to tame it.
  • Storage: A Pet Mimic has the inventory capacity of a double chest (54 slots) despite its small size.
  • Combat: Tamed Mimics will fight alongside their owner, attacking hostile mobs like a wolf.
  • Healing: You can heal your Pet Mimic by feeding it any type of meat.
  • Sitting: Right-clicking a Pet Mimic while sneaking will make it stay in place.

Management

  • Mimic Hand Bell: This tool is used to manage multiple mimics. It can be used to mark mimics or abandon them near an amethyst cluster if they are no longer needed.
  • Locking: Pet Mimics can be locked to prevent other players from accessing their inventory. A locked Pet Mimic will bite anyone who is not its owner.
