Overview#

Refined Storage (RS) is a powerful storage and automation mod that allows players to store vast quantities of items and fluids in a digital network. Unlike traditional chest-based storage, RS uses a centralized system where all resources are accessible through a single block called a Grid. The mod is highly modular, allowing for massive expansion through cables, wireless transmitters, and advanced auto-crafting systems.

Key Features

  • Unified Access: Access all your items and fluids from one interface.
  • Expandable Storage: Use Storage Disks or Storage Blocks to increase capacity indefinitely.
  • Auto-crafting: Automate complex recipes and machine processing with a few clicks.
  • World Interaction: Use Importers, Exporters, Constructors, and Destructors to interact with the physical world.
  • Fluid Support: Full integration for storing and managing liquids alongside items.

Getting Started#

To begin with Refined Storage, you must first gather specific materials to build the core components of your network.

Essential Resources

  1. Quartz Enriched Iron: The primary building material for most RS blocks. Created by combining 3 Iron Ingots and 1 Nether Quartz in a crafting table.
  2. Silicon: Obtained by smelting Nether Quartz in a furnace.
  3. Processor Binding: Crafted using 1 Slimeball and 1 String. This is used to create Raw Processors.
  4. Processors: The "chips" used in advanced recipes. There are three tiers: Basic (Iron), Improved (Gold), and Advanced (Diamond). To make them, craft a Raw Processor (Binding + Silicon + Redstone + Ingredient) and smelt it in a furnace.

The First Network

A minimal functioning network requires:

  • Controller: The heart of the system. It requires FE/RF power to function.
  • Disk Drive: A block that holds Storage Disks.
  • Storage Disk: The actual storage medium (e.g., 1k Storage Disk).
  • Grid: The interface used to see and interact with your items.
  • Cables: Used to connect blocks if they are not placed directly adjacent to each other.

Blocks#

Refined Storage adds a variety of functional blocks to manage your network.

Block Description Energy Usage
Controller The central hub of the network. Provides power to all connected devices. 0 RS/t (Generates)
Disk Drive Holds up to 8 Storage Disks (Item or Fluid). 2 RS/t
Grid Standard interface for viewing and extracting items. 2 RS/t
Crafting Grid A Grid with a built-in 3x3 crafting table. 4 RS/t
Fluid Grid Interface specifically for viewing and managing fluids. 2 RS/t
Pattern Grid Used to create Patterns for auto-crafting. 3 RS/t
Cable Connects RS devices over distances. 0 RS/t
External Storage Connects the network to external inventories like Chests or Barrels. 1 RS/t
Importer Pulls items/fluids from an external block into the network. 1 RS/t
Exporter Pushes items/fluids from the network into an external block. 1 RS/t
Constructor Places blocks or items into the world. 1 RS/t
Destructor Breaks blocks in the world and puts them into the network. 1 RS/t
Relay Allows toggling parts of the network on/off via Redstone. 1 RS/t
Detector Emits a Redstone signal based on the amount of a resource in the network. 2 RS/t

Items and Storage#

Storage in Refined Storage is handled via Storage Disks (placed in Disk Drives) or Storage Blocks (placed in the world).

Item Storage Tiers

Tier Capacity Components
1k 1,000 items 1k Storage Part + Storage Housing
4k 4,000 items 4k Storage Part + Storage Housing
16k 16,000 items 16k Storage Part + Storage Housing
64k 64,000 items 64k Storage Part + Storage Housing
Creative Infinite Creative Storage Disk

Fluid Storage Tiers

Tier Capacity Components
64k 64,000 mB (64 Buckets) 64k Fluid Storage Part + Housing
256k 256,000 mB 256k Fluid Storage Part + Housing
1024k 1,024,000 mB 1024k Fluid Storage Part + Housing
4096k 4,096,000 mB 4096k Fluid Storage Part + Housing

Functional Items

  • Wrench: Used to rotate blocks or dismantle them instantly (Shift + Right Click).
  • Storage Housing: The casing required to turn a Storage Part into a Storage Disk.
  • Filter: An item used in Grids to filter the view or in devices to whitelist/blacklist items.
  • Network Card: Used to link a Network Transmitter to a Network Receiver for long-distance connections.

Auto-crafting#

Auto-crafting allows the network to craft items on demand or as part of a complex chain.

Components

  • Pattern: An item that stores a recipe. It can be a Crafting Pattern (standard 3x3) or a Processing Pattern (for machines like Furnaces).
  • Crafter: The block that executes the patterns. It must face the machine it is processing into (for processing recipes) or just be on the network (for standard crafting).
  • Crafting Monitor: Displays the progress of active crafting tasks.
  • Crafter Manager: A centralized block to view and manage all Patterns across all Crafters in the network.

How to Setup

  1. Create a recipe in the Pattern Grid and save it to a Pattern.
  2. Place the Pattern into a Crafter.
  3. Request the item from any Grid. If the network has the ingredients, it will begin the task.

Upgrades#

Many RS devices can be enhanced with Upgrades to improve speed, efficiency, or functionality.

Upgrade Effect Compatible Devices
Speed Upgrade Increases the speed of operations. Importer, Exporter, Crafter, etc.
Stack Upgrade Allows devices to move a full stack at a time instead of single items. Importer, Exporter, Constructor
Crafting Upgrade Allows a device to trigger an auto-crafting task if an item is missing. Exporter, Interface
Range Upgrade Increases the reach of the Wireless Transmitter. Wireless Transmitter
Fortune Upgrade Adds Fortune I, II, or III to the device. Destructor
Silk Touch Upgrade Adds Silk Touch to the device. Destructor
Regulator Upgrade Keeps a specific amount of an item in an external inventory. Exporter

Wireless Technology#

Wireless devices allow you to access your network from anywhere in the world (or even across dimensions).

  • Wireless Transmitter: Must be connected to the network via cable. It provides a radius of wireless access.
  • Wireless Grid: A handheld item that allows you to access your items within the range of a Wireless Transmitter.
  • Wireless Fluid Grid: Handheld access to the fluid storage.
  • Wireless Crafting Monitor: Handheld access to view active crafting tasks.
  • Network Transmitter & Receiver: Used to connect two distant parts of a network. Place a Network Card in the Transmitter to link it to the Receiver.

Mechanics and Configuration#

Power (RS/t)

Refined Storage uses its own energy unit, RS, which is 1:1 compatible with FE (Forge Energy) and RF (Redstone Flux). The Controller acts as the battery and intake point for the entire network. If the power runs out, the network shuts down.

Priority System

Devices like External Storage and Disk Drives have a Priority setting. The network will always try to insert items into the device with the highest priority first and extract from the lowest priority first.

Filters and Modes

  • Whitelist/Blacklist: Most devices allow you to specify which items they should interact with.
  • Fuzzy Mode: Allows the network to ignore NBT data or durability when searching for items.
  • Redstone Modes: Devices can be configured to run always, only with a signal, or only without a signal.

Mobs, Biomes, and Structures

Refined Storage is a technical utility mod and does not add any mobs, creatures, biomes, or world structures. All content is focused on blocks, items, and networking mechanics.
