Overview#
Requiem completely revamps the vanilla death experience. Instead of a simple respawn screen and item loss, players are presented with a choice upon their first death: remain Mortal or become a Remnant (Demon). Choosing the path of the Remnant allows the player to continue playing as a ghost after death, seeking out new host bodies to possess.
The Choice
- Mortal: Death remains vanilla. You lose items and respawn at your bed or world spawn.
- Remnant: Upon death, your soul leaves your body. You become a Vagrant (ghost) and must find a suitable host to return to the physical world.
The Vagrant Form#
When a Remnant player dies, they enter the Vagrant state. This form is a spectral entity with unique traversal abilities but significant limitations.
Vagrant Mechanics
- Creative Flight: Vagrants can fly freely through the air.
- Phasing: By crouching or holding themselves against a wall, Vagrants can slowly phase through solid blocks.
- Size: Vagrants are small enough to fit through one-block-high gaps.
- Invisibility: Most mobs cannot see or interact with a Vagrant.
- Limitations: Vagrants cannot interact with the world, open chests, or use items. They have no inventory and cannot deal damage.
Possession Mechanics#
Possession is the core mechanic for Remnant players. To interact with the world again, a Vagrant must find a host body.
Host Types
- Soulless Mobs: Mobs like Zombies, Skeletons, Golems, and Shulkers can be possessed instantly by right-clicking them in Vagrant form.
- Living Mobs: Animals and Villagers possess souls and cannot be possessed directly. Their souls must first be removed using a Soul Vessel.
Possession Tiers & Abilities
Possessing different mobs grants specific strengths and weaknesses:
| Mob | Special Abilities | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|
| Zombie | Can eat Rotten Flesh to heal; converts to Drowned/Husk in water/desert. | Burns in sunlight; slow movement. |
| Skeleton | Can use Bones to repair health; drinks Milk for resistance. | Burns in sunlight; fragile. |
| Drowned | Can eat Raw Fish to heal; infinite breath underwater. | Slow on land. |
| Iron Golem | Massive health and attack damage. | No inventory access; cannot use items. |
| Villager | Full inventory access; can craft and trade; can gain XP. | Very low health; no natural attacks. |
| Axolotl | Can "Play Dead" when hurt to regenerate health. | Must stay hydrated. |
| Pufferfish | Can inflate to damage nearby enemies. | Limited movement. |
| Goat | Can perform a ram attack. | High fall damage. |
| Enderman | Teleportation abilities. | Damaged by water. |
Dissociation
Players can leave their host body at any time (default keybind: O or through the Origins power key if installed). This returns the player to Vagrant form, leaving the host body behind as a soulless shell.
Items#
Requiem adds several items to manage souls and the state of the player's existence.
Key Items
| Item | Description | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Soul Vessel | Used to extract souls from living mobs. Right-click a mob to attempt extraction. | Traded by Morticians or found in Derelict structures. |
| Opus Daemonium | A book used to change your death choice. | Crafted with a Book, Soul Vessel, and Obsidian. |
| Tachylite | A dense material used for advanced soul tech. | Mined from Tachylite blocks in the Nether. |
| Pendant of Piercing | Allows the player to possess mobs through armor. | Rare loot or Mortician trade. |
Opus Daemonium Variants
By writing specific phrases in a Neutral Opus Daemonium and signing it (costs 5 XP levels), you can create specialized versions:
- Advitum Mortal: Reverts the player to a permanent Mortal state.
- Advitum Eternum: Forces the player into the Remnant state.
- Advitum Vagrate: Instantly transforms the player into a Vagrant without dying.
Blocks & Structures#
Tachylite
Tachylite is a rare, obsidian-tough material found in the Nether.
- Derelict Tachylite: Found in Soul Sand Valleys. Breaking it drops XP and has a chance to drop a Shattered Soul Vessel.
- Tachylite Runestones: Used to build Obelisks. They glow based on the proximity of soul-related blocks.
Derelict Obelisk
A structure that generates naturally in Soul Sand Valleys. These structures are often guarded by Morticians and contain Rifts.
Soul Rifts
Rifts act as teleportation hubs for Vagrant players.
- Witnessing: A player must right-click a Rift to "witness" it before they can teleport to it.
- Teleportation: Vagrants can use Rifts to travel between discovered locations, though this often incurs Attrition.
Mobs#
The Mortician
The Mortician is a neutral humanoid mob that serves as the primary NPC for Requiem.
- Spawn: Near Derelict Obelisks in Soul Sand Valleys.
- Behavior: They are generally peaceful but will defend themselves. They have a unique "Soul Stealing" attack they use on non-player entities.
- Trading: They trade soul-related items, including Empty Soul Vessels, Tachylite, and specialized enchantments.
- Exorcism: Morticians can perform a trade that turns a Remnant player back into a Mortal.
Mechanics & Status Effects#
Attrition
Attrition is a stacking debuff received when a Remnant player dies too frequently or teleports via Rifts.
- Effect: Reduces the player's maximum health. At maximum stacks, health can be reduced by up to 80%.
- Recovery: Attrition slowly decays over time while the player is possessing a body.
Humanity Enchantment
Normally, possessed mobs (except Villagers) cannot gain experience from combat. The Humanity enchantment can be applied to weapons to allow a possessed host to collect XP from kills.
Mod Interactions#
- Origins: The choice between Mortal and Remnant is integrated into the Origins selection screen. While in Vagrant form or possessing a non-player body, Origin powers are disabled.
- Eldritch Mobs: Eldritch-tier mobs are immune to possession.
- Golems Galore: All modded golems from this mod are compatible with Requiem possession.
- Better Nether: Jungle Skeletons can be possessed by default.
