Overview#

Serene Seasons is a transformative mod for Minecraft that introduces a fully functional seasonal system. Unlike vanilla Minecraft, where biomes have static climates, Serene Seasons causes the world to evolve over time. Grass and foliage colors shift through vibrant greens, autumnal oranges, and wintry grays, while weather patterns and temperatures fluctuate to match the time of year.

The mod is designed to be highly compatible with other biome mods (such as Biomes O' Plenty) and automatically applies seasonal shifts to their unique foliage. Beyond aesthetics, the mod introduces a Crop Fertility mechanic, requiring players to plan their farming around the time of year or invest in greenhouse technology.

The Seasonal Cycle#

The year in Serene Seasons is divided into four primary seasons in temperate biomes and two seasons in tropical biomes. Each season is further divided into three sub-seasons: Early, Mid, and Late.

Temperate Seasons

By default, each sub-season lasts 8 in-game days, meaning a full season lasts 24 days, and a complete year spans 96 days.

Season Sub-Seasons Visual Changes Weather Effects
Spring Early, Mid, Late Lush bluish-green grass and foliage. High rainfall; snow begins to melt.
Summer Early, Mid, Late Yellowish-green, vibrant vegetation. Frequent thunderstorms; minimal rain.
Autumn Early, Mid, Late Orange, red, and yellow foliage. Gradual temperature drop; light rain.
Winter Early, Mid, Late Pale, grayish grass and leafless trees. Constant snow; rivers and lakes freeze.

Tropical Seasons

In tropical biomes like Jungles, Savannas, and Deserts, the standard four seasons are replaced by a Wet/Dry cycle.

  • Wet Season: Occurs during the temperate Winter and Spring. It features heavy, frequent rainfall, even in biomes that are normally dry. Vegetation becomes lush and green.
  • Dry Season: Occurs during the temperate Summer and Autumn. Rainfall is extremely rare or non-existent, and the grass takes on a parched, yellowish tint.

Crop Fertility & Greenhouses#

One of the most significant gameplay changes is the Crop Fertility system. Most crops can only grow during specific seasons. If a crop is planted out of season, it will grow significantly slower, and bone meal will be less effective.

Carrots Spring, Autumn
Potatoes Spring, Autumn

Greenhouse Mechanics

To bypass seasonal restrictions, players can build a Greenhouse. In version 1.20.1, the mod treats any block with the minecraft:glass tag (including stained glass) as a greenhouse roof.

  • Requirement: A glass block must be placed within 16 blocks directly above the crop.
  • Effect: Crops under a greenhouse roof are protected from seasonal temperature shifts and will grow at normal speed year-round.
  • Underground Farming: Crops planted below Y=48 (by default) are also considered "insulated" and will grow regardless of the season, provided they have sufficient light.

Serene Seasons adds several items to help players track and interact with the seasonal cycle.
