Overview#

Tainted Magic is a medium-to-large scale addon for Thaumcraft 4 (Minecraft) that focuses on providing high-tier, endgame content for experienced thaumaturges. The mod centers around the 'Obscura' tab in the Thaumonomicon, which is unlocked after finding a blood-stained page in the world. Its primary goal is to make the Tainted Lands biome more relevant and to provide a beneficial use for the Warp mechanic.

Key features include the introduction of Shadowmetal, a material more durable than Voidmetal; the Warpwood tree, which provides wand cores that regenerate Vis based on the player's Warp level; and the Fortress Blade system, which allows for highly customizable Katanas and Scythes capable of dealing divine damage.

Materials and Resources#

The mod introduces several new materials required for its high-tier infusions and crafting recipes.

Shadowmetal

Shadowmetal is the core material of the mod. It is heavier and more durable than Voidmetal but lacks its innate self-repairing properties unless specifically infused.

  • Shadow Ore: Found naturally in the world in veins of 4-8 blocks. It can also be created by transmuting Stone in a crucible with Metallum, Praecantatio, Tenebrae, and Vacuos.
  • Shadowmetal Ingot: Obtained by smelting Shadow Ore in a furnace or via crucible transmutation.

Shards and Essences

  • Warp Shard: Created by tossing a Balanced Shard into a crucible with 4 Alienis.
  • Flux Shard: Created by tossing a Balanced Shard into a crucible with Vitium.
  • Shard of Creation: An extremely rare and expensive endgame component made from Void Essence, Nether Stars, and Primordial Pearls. Used for the most powerful items like the Flyte Charm.
  • Phial of Crimson Blood: Obtained by striking entities with a Hollow Dagger while carrying empty glass phials. This replaces the older 'Crystal Blood' mechanic.

Fabrics

  • Shadow-Imbued Cloth: Crafted from Enchanted Fabric and Shadowmetal Ingots. Used for high-tier wand caps and armor.
  • Crimson Cloth: Used to craft the iconic robes of the Crimson Cult.

Armor and Baubles#

Tainted Magic provides some of the most protective armor sets in the Thaumcraft ecosystem.

Shadowmetal Fortress Armor

An upgrade to the Thaumium and Void Fortress sets. It provides superior protection and a 7% Vis discount per piece.

  • Shadow Fortress Helm: Grants 5 Temporary Warp and is compatible with all standard Fortress faceplates (Revealing, Sipping Fiend, etc.).
  • Night Bonus: The armor's damage reduction increases significantly during the night.

Boots of the Voidwalker

An advanced version of the Boots of the Traveler.

  • Properties: Grants immunity to fall damage, a massive speed boost to walking and flying, and a 5% Vis discount.
  • Visuals: Emits a dark, foggy particle effect while moving (can be toggled in the config).

Voidwalker's Sash of Runic Shielding

A belt-slot Bauble that provides +20 Runic Shielding. When paired with the Boots of the Voidwalker, it further increases movement speed to near-limit levels.

Flyte Charm

A powerful Bauble that grants creative-style flight.

  • Cost: Consumes 0.1 Aer Vis per tick from the player's wand.
  • Mechanics: Pressing the sprint key mid-air provides a speed burst, while the sneak key allows for a slow glide.

Tools and Weapons#

Thaumic Disassembler

A versatile multitool inspired by Mekanism's Atomic Disassembler. It functions as a pickaxe, shovel, axe, and hoe.

  • Modes: Off, Slow, Normal, and Fast (mines most blocks instantly).
  • Repair: Does not use durability in the traditional sense; instead, it consumes Perditio Vis from the player's wand to function and self-repair.

Edge of the Primordials

A hazardously sharp blade dealing 18.5 attack damage.

  • Abilities: Inflicts Wither II and Weakness II on hit. Blocking creates a 'vortex' (similar to a Hungry Node) that pulls nearby mobs (15-block radius) toward the player and damages them.

Fortress Blades (Katanas and Scythes)

The mod adds Shadowmetal, Voidmetal, and Thaumium variants of Katanas. These weapons can be 'charged' by holding right-click to release a powerful strike dealing up to 30 hearts of damage.

Inscription Effect
Tainted Deals Divine damage (ignores armor), inflicts Taint Poison, and releases Flux Gas on charged hits.
Raging Demon Replaces the Volcanic inscription; emits a single explosive fireball on strike.
Vengeful Spirit Casts a mini-shockwave effect on hit.
Benevolent Goddess Heals the user while inflicting Wither on nearby enemies.

Wands and Staves#

Warpwood Rod and Staff

The Warpwood core is the signature wand of the mod.

  • Capacity: The rod holds 250 Vis, while the staff core holds 500 Vis.
  • Recharge Mechanic: Unlike other rods, Warpwood recharges its Vis based on the player's current Warp level. The higher the player's permanent and temporary warp, the faster the wand replenishes its stores.

Wand Caps

  • Shadowmetal Caps: Provide a massive 35% Vis discount. Crafting them requires a Primordial Pearl (which is not consumed).
  • Cloth Caps: Early-game alternatives including Crimson-Stained (7% discount) and Shadow-Imbued (7% discount).

Wand Focuses#

Tainted Magic adds several unique focuses to the thaumaturge's arsenal:

  • Eldritch Pulse (Dark Matter): Fires high-damage projectiles similar to those used by Eldritch Guardians. Can be upgraded with 'Diffusion' to fire multiple bolts.
  • Shockwave Focus: Replaces the older Tainted Shockwave. It releases a burst of lightning that knocks back all nearby enemies.
  • Taint Swarm Focus: Summons a tamed Taint Swarm to attack a specific target. The swarm persists until the target dies.
  • Mage's Mace: Converts the wand into a melee weapon dealing 15+ damage. It consumes a small amount of Vis per hit.
  • Lumos: Creates a persistent light source. Can be upgraded into the Ring of Lumos for mobile lighting.
  • Salis Tempestas & Salis Aevus: Single-use items (formerly focuses) that allow the player to change the weather or time of day by throwing them.

Botany and Biomes#

Warpwood Trees

Warpwood trees are the primary source of Warpwood Logs and Saplings.

  • Growth: They cannot be crafted directly via infusion in later versions. Instead, the player must use Warping Fertilizer on a Silverwood Sapling.
  • Void Seeds: Warpwood trees occasionally generate 'knots' in their logs which, when broken, drop 1-5 Void Seeds.

Warpwater

Created by tossing Warped Bath Salts into water. Standing in Warpwater multiplies the player's current Warp level by 1.5 temporarily, which is useful for boosting the recharge rate of Warpwood wands.

Configuration#

The mod includes a configuration file (TaintedMagic.cfg) allowing server owners to balance the experience:

  • Shadow Ore Spawn Rate: Adjust the rarity of Shadow Ore veins.
  • Mage's Mace Power: Define the base damage of the Mage's Mace focus.
  • Particle Toggles: Disable the dark fog particles from the Boots of the Voidwalker to improve performance or visibility.
