Overview#
Applied Energistics is a technology mod centered on the ME Network, a system whose name refers to the conversion of Matter to and from Energy. Items added to the system are converted into a digital energy form and stored, then reconstructed into physical items on demand when the player or a machine requests them.
This approach replaces rows of physical chests with a compact, searchable digital storage system. A single network can hold enormous quantities of many different item types, and players interact with it through terminals that let them search, withdraw, and deposit items from one interface. Beyond storage, the network supports powerful automation, including request-driven autocrafting and integration with external machines and item transport.
Applied Energistics requires power to operate and draws on a range of energy types, accepting EU, RF, and MJ. If the network's main power supply is interrupted the system becomes inaccessible until power is restored, so backup power is recommended for important setups.
Network Components#
An ME Network is assembled from a set of core blocks and cables that coordinate storage, power, and connectivity.
- ME Controller: The central hub that coordinates the network and distributes power to all connected components. A network is organized around the controller.
- ME Drive: A block that holds multiple storage cells, making their contents part of the network.
- ME Chest: A single-cell storage block that also provides direct access to the items stored inside it.
- ME Cable and ME Covered Cable: The connection infrastructure that links blocks together into one network.
- ME Interface, Import Bus, and Export Bus: Connectivity blocks that move items between the network and external inventories or machines, importing resources in and exporting them out.
- Energy Cell and ME Power Relay: Blocks for storing buffered power and distributing energy through the network.
When these are joined by cable around a powered controller, they form a unified system that can be expanded as the player's needs grow.
Storage Cells#
Digital storage is provided by storage cells, portable items that define how much the network can hold. Standard item cells come in escalating capacity tiers.
| Cell | Capacity tier |
|---|---|
| ME 1k Storage Cell | Smallest standard tier |
| ME 4k Storage Cell | Higher capacity |
| ME 16k Storage Cell | Higher capacity |
| ME 64k Storage Cell | Largest standard tier |
Cells are placed into an ME Drive or ME Chest to contribute their space to the network. In addition to the standard item cells, the mod offers specialized storage:
- Spatial Storage Cells: Store entire regions of the world in dimensional pockets, available in sizes such as 2x2x2, 16x16x16, and 128x128x128.

- ME Creative Cell: A cell with effectively unlimited storage for creative use.
- ME Bus Memory Card: A tool for copying configuration between buses and components.
Terminals and Access#
Players interact with the contents of the network through terminals and monitors, which present the digital storage as a usable interface.
- ME Access Terminal: The primary inventory interface, letting the player search, deposit, and withdraw any item held in the network.
- ME Crafting Terminal: An access terminal with a built-in crafting grid, so items can be pulled from the network and crafted in one place.
- ME Storage Monitor: A block that displays the stored amount of a specific item directly in the world.
- ME Wireless Access Terminal: A handheld device that grants access to the network's contents remotely, without standing at a fixed terminal.
These interfaces are what make the network practical to use day to day, turning a large digital inventory into something that can be searched and managed quickly.
Autocrafting#
One of Applied Energistics' defining features is request-driven autocrafting, which lets the network build items on demand from stored materials and recipes.
- ME Molecular Assembler Chamber: A multi-block structure that acts as the central crafting processor for the network, assembling requested items.
- ME Pattern Encoder: A block used to encode crafting recipes onto blank patterns.
- Blank Pattern: The medium onto which recipes are written so the network knows how to craft a given item.
With encoded patterns supplied to the network, a player can request an item through a terminal and have the system automatically gather the ingredients and craft it, including crafting intermediate components as needed. The design supports recipes-on-demand with essentially no limit on the number of machines that can be integrated, allowing very large automated production setups.
Materials and Tools#
Applied Energistics introduces its own ores, processed materials, and tools used to build network components.
Ores and materials:
- Certus Quartz Ore: Generates in the world and yields Certus Quartz; grinding crystals produces Certus Quartz Dust.
- Certus Quartz Dust, Nether Quartz Dust, and Silicon: Processed crafting materials used throughout the mod's recipes.
- Fluix Dust and Fluix Pearl: Special materials central to many advanced components.

Processing and building blocks:
- Quartz Grindstone: A hand-powered block for grinding crystals and ores into dust.

- ME Condenser: A block that compresses matter, used to dispose of excess items or produce certain materials.
- Quartz Glass and Vibrant Quartz Glass: Decorative building blocks.
- Tiny TNT: A small explosive.
- Quantum Network Bridge: A structure used to link networks together across distance.
Tools: A full set of quartz tools is available, including a Pickaxe, Axe, Shovel, Hoe, Sword, and Wrench. Electric tools include the Entropy Accelerator and the Vibration Catalyst.
Applied Energistics also integrates broadly with other technology mods through Forge, working alongside transport pipes, machines, and energy systems from popular mods so the ME Network can serve as a shared storage and automation backbone.
