Overview#
Better Furnaces is a processing-focused mod that expands on Minecraft's single vanilla furnace by adding a progression of increasingly powerful furnaces. Each tier smelts faster than the last, letting players move from modest speed boosts to extremely rapid bulk smelting as they gather better materials.
Beyond raw speed, the mod introduces an upgrade system. Furnaces can be enhanced with upgrade items that improve fuel efficiency, increase ore output, add extra slots, enable liquid fuel, automate input and output with adjacent inventories, and even recolor the furnace. These features make Better Furnaces useful both for early-game convenience and for fully automated late-game processing lines.
The sections below cover the furnace tiers and their relative speeds, and the complete upgrade system.
Furnace Types#
Better Furnaces adds a series of furnaces, each smelting faster than the standard vanilla furnace. Higher tiers require progressively more valuable materials but dramatically reduce smelting time.

| Furnace | Smelting Speed (vs. standard furnace) |
|---|---|
| Iron Furnace | 1.5x faster |
| Gold Furnace | 2x faster |
| Diamond Furnace | 4x faster |
| Hell Furnace | 25x faster |
| Extreme Furnace | 50x faster |
The Iron and Gold Furnaces serve as affordable early upgrades, the Diamond Furnace is a solid mid-game workhorse, and the Hell and Extreme Furnaces provide the massive throughput needed for large-scale smelting operations.
Upgrade System#
Upgraded furnaces in Better Furnaces accept up to three upgrades applied to a single furnace, letting players tailor a furnace to their needs. Upgrades fall into three broad categories.

Efficiency Upgrades
- Fuel Efficiency: Doubles fuel usage efficiency, up to a limit of 128 items.
- Advanced Fuel Efficiency: Doubles fuel usage efficiency with no item limit.
Processing Upgrades
- Ore Processing: Doubles ore output, up to a limit of 512 items.
- Advanced Ore Processing: Doubles ore output with no limit.
Functional Upgrades
- Storage: Adds 2 extra fuel slots and 2 extra input slots.
- Liquid Fuel: Adds an internal tank so the furnace can smelt using lava.
- Input Factory: Specifies an adjacent inventory to pull input items from.
- Output Factory: Specifies an adjacent inventory to push finished items to.
- Factory: A combined upgrade providing input, output, and fuel control together.
- Color: Allows customizing the furnace's color; configured by shift right-clicking with the upgrade.
By combining efficiency, processing, and functional upgrades, players can build furnaces that burn fuel more economically, yield bonus materials from ores, and operate automatically as part of an item-handling system.
