Overview#
Emerald Chambers is the definitive sequel to the acclaimed 'Ruby Caverns' map, created by Dieuwt. It is widely recognized as the first 'traditional roguelike' built entirely within Minecraft. Unlike standard adventure maps, Emerald Chambers replaces the real-time survival mechanics of Minecraft with a grid-based, turn-based system where time only moves when the player moves.
Set six months after the events of Ruby Caverns, the story follows three heroes—the Warrior, the Mage, and the Thief—who are forced to enter a newly discovered underground garden. Their goal is to reach the legendary 'Medal' at the bottom of the dungeon, which is said to grant a single wish, and to find portals leading back to their lost civilizations.
Key Features
- Turn-Based Gameplay: Every action (moving, attacking, using items) counts as a turn. Enemies only move or act after the player has completed their turn.
- Top-Down Perspective: The map uses a custom camera system to provide a 2D, top-down view reminiscent of classic roguelikes like NetHack or Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.
- Procedural Generation: The dungeon layouts, item placements, and enemy spawns are randomized in every run, ensuring no two playthroughs are identical.
- Deep RPG Systems: Features a robust stat system including Attack, Defense, Magic, and Food management.
Character Classes#
Players can choose from several distinct classes, each with unique starting stats, equipment, and abilities. Mastering each class requires different strategies for survival.
| Class | Role | Primary Stats | Special Ability |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Warrior | Tank/Melee | High HP & Defense | Rage: Increases attack power for several turns. |
| The Mage | Spellcaster | High Magic & Mana | Casting: Can use various elemental spells (Casts). |
| The Thief | Agility/Crit | High Speed & Luck | Stealth: Allows for critical hits and avoiding detection. |
| The Jammed | Challenge | Low Stats | A secret, high-difficulty class for veteran players. |
| The Blaze | DLC/Aggressive | Fire Resistance | Fire Trail: Leaves a trail of fire that damages enemies. |
| The Spirit | DLC/Utility | Ethereal | Phase: Can move through certain obstacles or avoid hits. |
| The Evoker | DLC/Summoner | Summoning | Vex Summon: Calls forth minions to fight on the player's behalf. |
Core Mechanics#
Movement and Time
In Emerald Chambers, the world is frozen until the player acts. Moving one block consumes one turn. This allows players to stop and strategize their next move, calculating enemy distances and potential hazards.
Stats System
- Health (HP): If this reaches zero, the run ends. Health can be restored via potions or resting.
- Magic (MP): Consumed when using 'Casts' or magical items.
- Food: Every movement consumes a small amount of food. If the food bar is empty, the player will take damage every turn.
- Attack/Defense: These stats determine the damage dealt to and received from enemies. They are modified by weapons, armor, and temporary buffs.
Interaction
Players interact with the world using a custom interface. Actions like 'Use', 'Attack', and 'Grab' are mapped to specific controls, allowing for seamless interaction with entities and items within the grid-based environment.
Items and Equipment#
The map features over 100 unique items, many of which have randomized properties or colors to mimic the 'unidentified item' mechanic of classic roguelikes.
Equipment Categories
- Weapons (20 Types): Includes swords, daggers, and staves. Each has specific attack ranges and stat bonuses.
- Armor (20 Types): Provides defense and sometimes magical resistances.
- Casts (10 Types): Reusable magical spells that consume Magic points.
Consumables
| Item Type | Quantity | General Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Potions | 10 Colors | Healing, speed, strength, or harmful effects (randomized per run). |
| Scrolls | 10 Types | Utility effects like teleportation, mapping, or enchanting. |
| Rocks | 10 Types | Throwable items used for ranged damage or triggering traps. |
| Crystals | Variable | The primary currency used for trading with NPCs and upgrading gear. |
Bestiary (Mobs & Bosses)#
The dungeon is populated by various hostile entities. Each mob has its own AI pathfinding and attack patterns.
Common Enemies
| Mob | Health | Attack | Defense | Behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spider | 30 | 8-10 | 1-3 | Inflicts Poison on hit. |
| Forest Spider | 20 | 5-7 | 0-2 | Fast; attacks twice per turn. |
| Silverfish | 20 | 6-10 | 2-3 | Small hitbox; attacks twice per turn. |
| Skeleton | 25 | 10-12 | 1-2 | Ranged attacker; keeps distance. |
| Ghost | 15 | 8-15 | 0 | Can move through walls; hard to hit. |
Bosses
There are 20 unique bosses scattered across the 12 floors of the dungeon. Bosses appear in specialized 'Boss Rooms' and often guard the stairs to the next floor.
- Zerumis: The guardian of the Stringed Caves. Uses web-based attacks to trap the player.
- The God: A returning antagonist from the first map, appearing as a final or secret encounter.
Dungeon Structure#
The Emerald Chambers consists of 12 primary floors, each with a distinct theme and increasing difficulty.
Areas
- The Tunnels: The starting area, featuring basic stone corridors and simple enemies.
- Deep Woods: An overgrown section with forest-themed mobs and more complex layouts.
- Stringed Caves (Secret): A hidden area filled with webs and spiders. It contains the Void Opener, a powerful unique item.
- The Garden: A lush but deadly area near the midpoint of the dungeon.
- The Portals: The final stretch where the reality of the dungeon begins to warp.
Hazards
- Webs: Take one extra turn to move through.
- Traps: Hidden pressure plates that fire projectiles or spawn enemies.
- Void: Falling into the void results in instant death or heavy damage depending on the floor.
Installation and Rules#
To ensure the map functions correctly, players must adhere to the following setup guidelines:
- Version Compatibility: Designed for Minecraft (and compatible with 1.14.4+ versions depending on the specific build).
- Render Distance: Recommended to be set to 8-12 chunks to prevent command block lag.
- Difficulty: Must be played on Normal or Hard (the map handles its own difficulty scaling).
- Resource Pack: The map comes with a mandatory internal resource pack that provides the custom textures and top-down UI. Ensure it is active upon loading the world.
Official Rules
- Do not use cheats or creative mode, as it will break the turn-based logic.
- Do not break blocks unless specifically instructed by the gameplay mechanics.
- Death is permanent (Hardcore mode is encouraged for the true roguelike experience).
