Overview#
More Furnaces, created by cubex2, adds a family of upgraded furnaces to Minecraft. Each new furnace improves on the vanilla furnace in some way: more smelting slots, faster smelting speed, multiple fuel slots, or the ability to smelt several items at once.
The furnaces are tiered roughly by the cost of the material used to build them. Cheap furnaces like the Netherrack Furnace trade speed for not needing fuel, while expensive furnaces like the Diamond Furnace smelt many items simultaneously at very high speed. This lets players scale up their smelting throughput as they progress and gather better resources.
Furnace Types and Stats#
Each furnace differs in smelting speed, fuel consumption, and the number of input, output, and fuel slots it provides. Speed is shown relative to the vanilla furnace (1x = 200 ticks per item); lower tick counts are faster.
| Furnace | Speed | Ticks/Item | Fuel Use | Input Slots | Output Slots | Fuel Slots |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netherrack | 0.11x | 1800 | None | 1 | 1 | 0 |
| Copper | 1.33x | 150 | 1.25x | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| Iron | 1.33x | 150 | 1.25x | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| Silver | 2x | 100 | 1.75x | 4 | 5 | 4 |
| Gold | 2.5x | 80 | 2x | 4 | 5 | 4 |
| Obsidian | 1.33x base | 150 | 2x | 2-4 | 2-4 | 2 |
| Diamond | 5x | 40 | 4x | 7 | 9 | 7 |
Higher tiers smelt faster and process more items per cycle, but most of them consume fuel more quickly than a vanilla furnace, so faster smelting comes at a higher fuel cost.
Special Furnace Mechanics#
Two furnaces behave differently from the others:
-
Netherrack Furnace - does not use any fuel at all. Instead it must be activated by placing fire on top of it, after which it smelts very slowly (1800 ticks per item, about 0.11x vanilla speed). Because it relies on fire placement rather than fuel input, it cannot be supplied fuel by ordinary automated methods. It is useful as a free, hands-off smelter when speed is not a concern.
-
Obsidian Furnace - can smelt two items at once while using the same amount of fuel as smelting a single item. This effectively doubles its throughput, giving it an effective speed of about 2.66x (roughly 75 ticks per item) even though its base smelting rate matches the Copper and Iron furnaces.
The higher-tier furnaces (Silver, Gold, Diamond) gain their advantage from large numbers of input and output slots combined with high speed, letting them work through big stacks of ore quickly when supplied with enough fuel.
