Genetic Animals Mod Wiki

Genetic Animals is a comprehensive realism overhaul for Minecraft's livestock, introducing a complex Mendelian genetics system, diverse breeds, and realistic survival mechanics for animals.

Overview#

Genetic Animals completely replaces vanilla livestock with entities featuring millions of possible genetic variations. Every animal's appearance, size, and resource production are determined by a true-to-life genetics core rather than random chance. This mod introduces realistic models, dynamic animations (such as blinking and ear twitching), and complex behaviors like sleeping, grazing, and gender-based breeding.

Key features include:

  • True Genetics: Offspring inherit traits from parents based on dominant and recessive genes.
  • Realistic Models: Dynamic models that change size and shape based on genetic markers.
  • New Mechanics: Hunger, thirst, gestation periods, and gender-based breeding.
  • Expanded Equipment: Dyeable saddles, bridles, collars, and animal-specific inventories.

Genetics System#

The core of the mod is its Mendelian genetics engine. When two animals breed, the offspring receive a combination of alleles from both parents, determining their phenotype (physical appearance) and genotype (hidden traits).

Inheritable Traits

Trait Effect
Size Determines the physical scale of the animal and the amount of meat/leather dropped.
Color & Pattern Controls coat colors, spots, and layering textures.
Production Affects how much milk a cow produces or how many eggs a hen lays.
Horns Determines if an animal is horned or polled (hornless).
Body Shape Influences whether a cow is a 'dairy' type (thinner) or 'beef' type (bulkier).
Litter Size Specifically for pigs and rabbits, determining the number of offspring per birth.

Animals#

Each animal species has been rebuilt with unique traits and requirements.

Cows & Mooshrooms

Cows come in various real-world breeds like Holstein, Jersey, and Brahman. They can be selectively bred for high milk yield or high meat yield. Mooshrooms function similarly but graze on mycelium and mushrooms.

  • Milk: Only produced after the first birth. Yield varies from 1 to 5 buckets per day.
  • Riding: Cows can be equipped with saddles and bridles for riding.

Sheep

Sheep feature diverse wool types and horn configurations (including polycerate or multi-horned).

  • Wool: Can be dyed; however, naturally dark sheep may only produce tinted wool.
  • Milk: Sheep can be milked for one bucket per day, useful for feeding orphan animals.

Chickens

Chickens are highly diverse, with over 265 varieties of eggs.

  • Nests: Hens will seek out nests to lay eggs. If five eggs are present, they will begin incubation.
  • Roosters: Distinct from hens, roosters feature larger combs and tail feathers and will crow at dawn.

Pigs

Pigs are neutral mobs that may attack if provoked. They have the largest litter sizes, potentially giving birth to up to 14 piglets.

  • Diet: Extremely varied; they will eat almost anything, including rotten flesh and buckets of milk.

Rabbits

Includes breeds like Angora (which can be sheared for wool), Lionheads, and Lops. Litter sizes range from 1 to 12 kits.

Other Animals

  • Llamas: Feature unique face shapes and can be equipped with carpets and chests.
  • Axolotls & Turtles: Genetic variants exist for these aquatic creatures, affecting color and size.

Items & Equipment#

The mod adds several items to manage and customize your animals.

Animal Gear

  • Saddles & Bridles: Used for riding and steering cows, pigs, and llamas. These are dyeable.
  • Collars: Can be equipped on any animal. Named collars will display the name in the animal's GUI. Bell collars chime when the animal moves.
  • Chests: Can be equipped on cows, llamas, pigs, and sheep to provide mobile storage.
  • Carpets: Used as decorative blankets for llamas, cows, and pigs.

Resources

  • Egg Carton: A storage block that holds multiple non-stackable genetic eggs.
  • Meat Cuts: Dropped meat varies in size (e.g., 'Large Raw Beef') based on the animal's genetics.
  • Gene Book: A tool used to track and record the genetic history of your animals.

Blocks#

Functional Blocks

  • Unbound Hay: Created by right-clicking a Hay Block with a sharp tool (like a sword or axe). Animals can eat from this block 9 times before it is consumed.
  • Sparse Grass: Created when an animal grazes on a grass block. It turns back into grass faster than dirt and can spread to nearby dirt blocks.
  • Posts: Wooden perches for chickens. Chickens will attempt to fly up and sleep on these at night.

Mechanics#

The Animal GUI

By crouching and right-clicking an animal, players can access a detailed status screen. This interface displays:

  • Gender: Indicated by male/female symbols.
  • Age: Measured in Minecraft days.
  • Status: Hunger levels, health, and pregnancy progress.
  • Pedigree: Displays the names of the Sire (father) and Dam (mother) if they were named before breeding.

Breeding & Gestation

Breeding requires a male and female of the same species. Once bred, the female (or both, if 'Omnigender' is enabled) will enter a gestation period.

  • Gestation: Typically lasts 1-2 Minecraft days.
  • Incubation: For chickens, eggs must be kept in a nest or thrown (with a lower hatch rate) to produce chicks.

Grazing & Hunger

Animals must eat to maintain health, produce resources, and carry pregnancies. They will naturally graze on grass blocks, but if grass is unavailable, they must be hand-fed or provided with Unbound Hay.

Configuration#

The mod's behavior can be adjusted via the genetic-animals-common.toml file.

Setting Description
Omnigender If true, any two animals can breed regardless of gender. If false, a male and female are required.
Gestation Time Adjusts how many ticks a pregnancy lasts.
Hunger Rate Controls how quickly animals become hungry.
Spawn Rates Allows users to toggle whether genetic versions replace vanilla spawns.
