Overview#

The Gravestone Extended Mod (specifically version 26.1.2 for Minecraft) serves as the comprehensive content module for NightKosh's Gravestone ecosystem. While the base 'Graves' mod focuses on the core mechanic of spawning a marker upon death, the Extended version transforms the world into a more atmospheric and dangerous environment. It introduces massive underground structures, a variety of undead creatures, and specialized blocks like the Altar for resurrection and disenchanting.

Since Minecraft, the mod has been split into two primary components:

  • Graves: Handles the basic gravestone generation and inventory storage.
  • Extended: Adds all additional content, including mobs, items, blocks, and structures.

Death Mechanics & Recovery#

When a player dies, the mod ensures their items are protected within a Gravestone. This marker prevents item despawning and provides a clear point of recovery.

The Obituary

Upon respawning, the player receives an Obituary (Death Note). This item is crucial for recovery as it contains:

  • Player Name: The owner of the grave.
  • Coordinates: Exact X, Y, Z location of the death.
  • Dimension: Where the death occurred (Overworld, Nether, etc.).
  • Death Date: The in-game day and time of the incident.
  • Inventory List: A full list of items stored in the grave.

Gravestone Generation

Gravestones are not just generic blocks; their appearance can change based on the circumstances of death:

Death Cause Gravestone Appearance
Explosion Charged Creeper Statue
Starving/Wither Skeleton Corpse
Magic Grave with an Enchanted Aura
Jungle/Swamp Mossy Gravestone
Equipped Sword 25% chance to spawn as a Sword stuck in the ground

Retrieval & Customization

  • Retrieval: Breaking the grave returns all items. Using a Shovel to click the grave allows you to retrieve items without destroying the block.
  • Silk Touch: Using a Silk Touch pickaxe allows players to pick up the gravestone as an item while preserving its data.
  • Renaming: Gravestones can be renamed in an Anvil to display custom text on the marker.

Structures#

The mod populates the world with several spooky structures that offer both danger and high-tier loot.

Wither's Catacombs

This is a massive, multi-layered underground dungeon similar in scale to a Stronghold. It is primarily constructed from Nightstone and Withered Bricks.

  • Features: Contains numerous traps, hidden chests, and mob spawners.
  • Boss: A Wither Boss resides at the very end of the structure.
  • Loot: High-value items including diamonds, enchanted books, and mod-specific equipment like Bone Armor.

Cemeteries

Cemeteries are generated as part of some villages. They are often surrounded by iron bars and feature a variety of gravestones and memorials. At night, these areas may become foggy and spawn undead mobs.

Undertaker House

A new village building where the Undertaker villager lives. This house typically contains a Chisel and various decorative grave components.

Mobs#

The Extended mod adds several unique entities, many of which are hostile variations of existing creatures.

Skull Crawlers

Small, spider-like undead creatures that have a 10% chance to spawn whenever a corresponding undead mob is killed. They can climb walls and hide inside bone blocks or bone piles.

Type Effect on Attack Spawn Source
Zombie Skull Crawler None Killing Zombies
Husk Skull Crawler Hunger Killing Husks
Skeleton Skull Crawler None Killing Skeletons
Stray Skull Crawler Slowness Killing Strays
Wither Skull Crawler Wither Killing Wither Skeletons

Undead Pets

Hostile versions of tamed animals that spawn naturally at night or near graves.

  • Zombie Pets: Stronger than their living counterparts; they attack villagers and can infect other animals.
  • Skeleton Pets: Faster than living versions but have only half the health.
  • Types: Dogs, Cats, and Horses.

Toxic Sludge

A dangerous, green slime-like mob found deep underground (below Y=30). It is more aggressive than vanilla slimes and applies the Rust effect, which damages the player's armor and held items over time.

Blocks & Items#

Specialized Blocks

  • Altar: A powerful block used to resurrect dead villagers or pets using their Corpses. It can also be used to disenchant items by consuming Enchanted Skulls.
  • Skull Candles: Decorative light sources crafted by placing a candle on a skull. Five skull candles can be used to craft a mob-specific Spawner.
  • Blightwater: A toxic green liquid found in catacombs. It damages non-undead mobs and converts blocks (e.g., Grass to Dirt, Stone to Cobblestone).
  • Withered Bricks: Indestructible blocks (resistant to explosions and mob griefing) used in catacombs.

Key Items

  • Chisel: Used to craft various decorative gravestones and memorials.
  • Corpses: Dropped when a villager, dog, cat, or horse dies. These are used at an Altar for resurrection.
  • Enchanted Skulls: Special items that act as compasses. For example, the Ender Skull points toward the nearest Stronghold, while the Imp Skull points to Nether Bridges.
  • Bone Equipment: Includes Bone Swords, Bone Armor, and the Bone Fishing Pole (used to fish in Blightwater).

Potions

Potion Effect
Recall Teleports the player back to their bed/spawn point.
Purification Removes all negative status effects and prevents grave mob spawns.
Inferno Ignites all nearby mobs (except pets).
Blizzard Freezes all nearby mobs (except pets).
Bone Skin Grants immunity to the Rust effect.

Enchantments#

The mod introduces several enchantments focused on death and bone-based combat.

  • Soulbound: The most sought-after enchantment. Items with Soulbound remain in the player's inventory after death rather than being placed in a grave.
  • Shadow of Death: Increases damage dealt to mobs, with the bonus scaling based on the player's proximity to death.
  • Poisoned/Withered Blade: Applies Poison or Wither effects to targets hit by the weapon.
  • Pain Mirror: A shield enchantment that reflects a portion of incoming damage back at the attacker.
  • Bone Rain: A hoe enchantment that allows the player to use Bone Meal on blocks by right-clicking, consuming durability instead of items.

Commands & Configuration#

Commands

  • /generate <structure_name> <x> <z>: Manually generates a mod structure (e.g., catacombs) at the specified coordinates.
  • /enchant <player> gravestone:soulbound <level>: Applies the Soulbound enchantment to the held item.

Configuration

Almost every aspect of the mod can be toggled in the GraveStone.cfg file:

  • GeneratePlayersGraves: Enable/Disable grave spawning for players.
  • OnlyOwnerCanLootGrave: If true, only the player who died can open their grave.
  • AmountOfSavedItems: Set the percentage of items saved (default 100%).
  • GravesMobsSpawnChance: Adjust how often mobs spawn from graves at night.
  • StructuresDimensionIds: A list of dimension IDs where catacombs and cemeteries are allowed to generate.
