Overview#

Hardcore Ender Expansion (HEE) completely redefines the End dimension, transforming it from a barren wasteland into a vibrant, dangerous, and rewarding realm. The mod focuses on three core pillars: a significantly more difficult Ender Dragon boss fight, the addition of vast 'Biome Islands' far beyond the central island, and a deep technical progression system involving Energy and Essence.

Players progress through the mod by using the Ender Compendium, an in-game guide that tracks discoveries and unlocks new information as the player interacts with the world. The mod also introduces unique ores, complex machinery like the Decomposition Table, and a variety of new mobs that make the End a true late-game challenge.

The Ender Compendium#

The Ender Compendium is the central hub for all mod knowledge. Unlike traditional wikis, it is an interactive system accessed by pressing the 'P' key (default).

Knowledge Progression

Knowledge is divided into Fragments. Players earn Knowledge Points by:

  • Observation: Looking at new blocks, items, or mobs.
  • Interaction: Mining blocks, killing mobs, or crafting items.
  • Knowledge Notes: Consuming these items (found in loot) provides a burst of points.

Points are spent within the Compendium GUI to unlock detailed information, including mob stats, item properties, and complex crafting recipes. Unlocking all fragments in a category grants a golden outline to that icon.

The Ender Dragon Overhaul#

The Ender Dragon is no longer a simple target. The battle is divided into several dynamic phases, and the dragon possesses advanced AI and new abilities.

Battle Phases

Phase Behavior
Passive The dragon flies around, occasionally diving at the player.
Aggressive The dragon actively pursues the player, dealing high contact damage.
Fireball Shoots explosive fireballs that leave lingering fire or potion effects.
Vampire Bats Summons a swarm of Vampire Bats to distract and drain the player's health.
Dive Bomb Dives into the ground and erupts beneath the player.

Dragon Crystals

Crystals are now protected by iron bars or TNT traps. Their healing range and speed scale with the world's difficulty setting. Destroying them is essential to prevent the dragon from regenerating health during its passive phases.

Rewards

Upon death, the dragon drops a massive amount of experience and Dragon Essence, a critical material for high-tier brewing and altar upgrades. The Dragon Egg also gains new functionality, acting as a teleportation anchor or a crafting ingredient for the Temple Caller.

Biomes of the End#

Beyond the central island lie Biome Islands, massive structures that generate thousands of blocks away. Each biome features unique flora, fauna, and structures.

Infested Forest

A dark, overgrown biome filled with Spooky Logs and Thorny Bushes. It is home to the Louse and Infested Bats. Players can find Silverfish Dungeons here, which contain valuable loot and the Infestation Remedy.

Burning Mountains

A volcanic landscape featuring lava flows and Igneous Rock. This biome is inhabited by Fire Fiends and contains Resource Pits—deep shafts filled with rare ores like Sphalerite and Endium.

Enchanted Island

A mystical biome composed of Homogenous Matter. It is the primary spawning ground for Baby Endermen and Homeland Endermen. Rare variations include the Laboratory, a structure filled with Laboratory Obsidian and high-tech loot.

Mobs and Creatures#

HEE adds several new entities, each with distinct behaviors and combat mechanics.

Mob HP Behavior Drops
Angry Enderman 40 Aggressive on sight; faster than standard Endermen. Ender Pearl, End Powder
Baby Enderman 15 Passive; teleports away when approached. Ender Pearl
Ender Guardian 80 Spawns in structures; high knockback attacks. Obsidian, Ender Pearl
Fire Fiend 100 Mini-boss in Burning Mountains; shoots fireballs. Fiery Essence
Louse 10 Small, insect-like; spawns in Infested Forests. Silverfish Blood
Vampire Bat 6 Summons by the Dragon; drains health to heal the Dragon. Bat Wing
Homeland Enderman 40 Found in Enchanted Islands; has unique social behaviors. Ender Pearl

Items and Materials#

Key Materials

  • End Powder: The primary currency and fuel for the mod. Used to unlock Compendium entries and enhance blocks.
  • Stardust: Obtained from Stardust Ore; used in crafting Charms and the Biome Compass.
  • Endium Ingot: Smelted from Endium Ore; used for high-tier tools and the Void Chest.
  • Essences (Dragon, Fiery, Spectral): Collected from bosses and used to power Essence Altars.

Functional Items

  • Transference Gem: Allows for short-range teleportation. Can be enhanced to increase range or reduce cooldown.
  • Temple Caller: A powerful artifact used to return to the Dragon's Lair or reset the End dimension.
  • Charm Pouch: Stores Charms, which provide passive buffs like increased speed, fire resistance, or auto-smelting.
  • Void Chest: A special chest that automatically retrieves items the player loses by falling into the Void.

Blocks and Machinery#

Essence Altars

Altars are used to process materials and enhance items. They require Energy and specific Essences to function.

  • Dragon Altar: Repairs and improves enchantments.
  • Fiery Altar: Acts as a high-speed, high-efficiency furnace.
  • Spectral Altar: Used for advanced soul-related crafting and curses.

Technical Blocks

  • Decomposition Table: Breaks down items into their base crafting components. Requires Energy to operate.
  • Energy Extraction Table: Extracts Energy from items like Ender Pearls or End Powder to fill nearby Energy Clusters.
  • Ender Goo: A hazardous liquid found in the End that slows players and causes random teleportation.

Mechanics: Energy and Enhancements#

The Energy System

Energy is an omnipresent force in the End. It is stored in Energy Clusters, which naturally generate in the world.

  • Transfer: Energy can be moved using an Energy Wand.
  • Usage: Machines like the Decomposition Table and Essence Altars draw Energy from nearby clusters.
  • Regeneration: Clusters slowly regenerate over time, but can be manually refilled using the Extraction Table.

Block Enhancements

By right-clicking certain blocks (like the Brewing Stand or TNT) with End Powder, players can apply enhancements.

  • Enhanced Brewing Stand: Can brew potions up to Tier III or increase duration significantly.
  • Enhanced TNT: Can have increased blast radius, fire damage, or the ability to drop all blocks as items.

HEE 2 Development#

Hardcore Ender Expansion 2 (HEE 2) is the planned successor to the 1.7.10 version. While the original mod remains a definitive experience for older Minecraft versions, HEE 2 aims to rebuild the core concepts from the ground up for modern versions. Development updates and feature previews are occasionally released by the creator, Chylex, showcasing new mechanics and visual overhauls that will eventually replace the legacy systems of HEE 1.
