Overview#

Incubation is a small yet essential addition to the Minecraft experience, designed by Team Abnormals to streamline poultry farming and expand the utility of eggs. The mod addresses the common issue of eggs cluttering the ground by introducing Nests, which chickens actively seek out to lay their eggs. Beyond automation, the mod adds decorative storage solutions and nutritious new food items, making egg farming both more efficient and rewarding.

Blocks#

Nests

Nests are the core utility blocks of the mod. They serve as a designated location for chickens to lay eggs, preventing them from being scattered across the floor.

  • Twig Nest: A naturally occurring variant that can be found in various forest and plains biomes. It functions identically to the Hay Nest.
  • Hay Nest: A player-crafted variant made from wheat. It provides a cozy spot for chickens to congregate.

Chicken AI Chickens within a 16-block radius will prioritize walking to a nest when they are about to lay an egg.

Egg Crates

Egg Crates are decorative storage blocks that allow players to store large quantities of eggs in a compact, visually appealing way. They are similar to the vanilla Hay Bale or Melon block.

Mechanics#

Automated Egg Harvesting

The primary mechanic of Incubation is the interaction between Chickens, Nests, and Hoppers.

  1. Pathfinding: When a chicken is ready to lay an egg, it scans the nearby area (16 blocks) for an available Nest. If one is found, the chicken will move to the nest and sit on it until the egg is produced.
  2. Collection: Once the egg is laid, it appears inside the Nest block. Players can right-click the nest to retrieve eggs manually.
  3. Hopper Integration: By placing a Hopper directly beneath a Nest, the eggs are instantly pulled into the hopper's inventory. This allows for the creation of clean, lag-free automatic egg farms without the need for water streams or complex minecart systems.

Village Integration

Incubation adds a new structure to vanilla villages: the Hen House. These small buildings generate naturally and contain several Nests and a few resident chickens, providing players with an early-game source of eggs and nests.
