Overview#
The More Materials Mod, created by localtoast, focuses on expanding the architectural palette available to players. It moves away from the simplistic vanilla brick crafting by introducing intermediate materials like Brick Clay and Daub, which require a mixture of soil types. The mod is particularly noted for its implementation of Wattle and Daub construction through customizable Wooden Frames and the addition of realistic Thatched Roofing, making it a staple for medieval, rustic, and modern builds alike.

While the mod does not add new mobs, biomes, or dimensions, it significantly overhauls the decorative block system by providing 16 color variants for almost every new block type, including bricks, stairs, slabs, and walls.
Items#
The mod adds several intermediate items used in the construction of advanced building blocks. These items represent the raw materials used in traditional masonry and carpentry.
Raw Materials
| Item | Description | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| Brick Clay | A mixture of clay, sand, and dirt. | Used to create standard bricks or stained variants. |
| Stained Brick Clay | Brick clay that has been treated with dye. | Must be fired in a furnace to produce Stained Bricks. |
| Stained Brick | The fired result of Stained Brick Clay. | Used to craft Stained Brick Blocks and Walls. |
| Daub | A primitive plaster made from earth and clay. | The primary filler for Wooden Frames (Wattle and Daub). |
Staining and Firing
Staining occurs at the clay stage. Unlike vanilla hardened clay which is stained after firing, More Materials requires the player to dye the Brick Clay first. Once dyed, the clay is fired in a furnace to lock in the color as a Stained Brick.
Blocks#
The core of the mod consists of a massive variety of building blocks. Most blocks come in all 16 Minecraft colors: White, Orange, Magenta, Light Blue, Yellow, Lime, Pink, Gray, Light Gray, Cyan, Purple, Blue, Brown, Green, Red, and Black.
Stained Brick Blocks
These are the primary decorative blocks of the mod. They function identically to vanilla brick blocks but offer a full spectrum of colors. They are available in three forms:
- Full Blocks: Standard 1x1 blocks.
- Stairs: Sloped blocks for roofing and detailing.
- Slabs: Half-height blocks for flooring and accents.
Walls
The mod expands the "Wall" category (similar to Cobblestone Walls) to include several new materials:
- Brick Walls: Traditional red brick walls.
- Stained Brick Walls: Walls matching the 16 stained brick colors.
- Hardened Clay Walls: Walls made from standard terracotta.
- Stained Clay Walls: Walls made from the 16 colors of stained terracotta.
Wooden Frames#
Wooden Frames (also known as Wattle and Daub panels) are specialized decorative blocks that place a plaster-like daub surface inside a timber frame. These are essential for Tudor-style or medieval architecture.
Wood Variants
Frames can be crafted using any vanilla wood type, which changes the color of the timber border:
- Oak
- Spruce
- Birch
- Jungle
- Acacia
- Dark Oak
Frame Patterns
There are 4 distinct patterns for every wood type, determined by the arrangement of sticks in the crafting grid:
- Plain: A simple square timber frame with a daub center.
- Diagonal: A frame with a single diagonal timber brace.
- Cross: A frame with an 'X' shaped timber brace.
- Double Diagonal: A more complex bracing pattern often used for structural highlights.

Thatched Roofing#
Thatched Roofing provides a realistic alternative to using wooden stairs for roofs. These blocks have a unique straw texture and are modeled to look like bundled hay.
- Properties: Thatched roofing blocks are flammable and can be easily destroyed by fire.
- Appearance: They feature a "wavy" texture that mimics the look of layered straw found on traditional cottages.

Recipes#
All recipes in More Materials are designed to be survival-friendly and intuitive.

Block Recipes
| Result | Ingredients | Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Stained Brick Block | 4 Stained Bricks | 2x2 Square |
| Stained Brick Stairs | 6 Stained Brick Blocks | Stair Pattern |

Wooden Frame Patterns
All frame recipes require 1 Daub in the center slot and Sticks in the surrounding slots. The wood type is determined by the type of sticks/planks used in the version-specific recipe (in 1.10.2, wood-specific sticks or planks are used).
- Plain Frame: 8 Sticks surrounding 1 Daub.
- Diagonal Frame: 7 Sticks surrounding 1 Daub (leaving one corner empty).
- Cross Frame: 6 Sticks surrounding 1 Daub (forming an X shape with sticks).
- Complex Frame: 5 Sticks surrounding 1 Daub.
Mechanics#
Firing Process
Unlike vanilla Bricks which are made by smelting pure Clay Balls, this mod requires the creation of Brick Clay first.
- Combine Dirt, Sand, and Clay to get Brick Clay.
- (Optional) Combine Brick Clay with Dye to get Stained Brick Clay.
- Place the clay into a Furnace.
- The output will be a Brick or a Stained Brick.
Wattle and Daub Construction
Wooden Frames are full blocks but are often used as "panels." In the 1.10.2 version, these blocks support connected textures if compatible resource packs or mods are installed, allowing the timber frames to connect seamlessly across multiple blocks.
