Overview#

Portal Gun Mod recreates the core mechanics of the Portal games inside Minecraft. Its centerpiece is the Portal Gun, a handheld device that fires two linked portals onto surfaces. Walking into one portal instantly transports the player (and other entities) to the other, preserving momentum so players can fling themselves across gaps.

Beyond the gun itself, the mod adds a full suite of test-chamber apparatus inspired by Aperture Science: Weighted Companion Cubes and Storage Cubes, Aerial Faith Plates that launch entities, High Energy Pellet launchers and catchers, Material Emancipation Grids, and several types of automated turrets. Together these items let players build their own test chambers and puzzle rooms.

A notable feature is that portals work across dimensions: a player can keep a separate pair of same-colored portals active in more than one dimension at the same time, allowing creative long-distance travel networks.

Portal Guns#

The Portal Gun is the main tool of the mod. It fires two portals of different colors; the two portals are always linked, and entering one exits the other. Because momentum is conserved through portals, players can drop through a downward-facing portal and be launched out of a wall-mounted one at high speed.

The mod includes several gun variants, which differ mainly in appearance and theming:

  • Single Colored Portal Gun - places only one of the two portal colors.

Guns are assembled from special internal components, including Ender Pearl Dust, a Miniature Black Hole, and PotatOS, reflecting the gun's teleportation power source.

Test Chamber Apparatus#

The mod adds a large set of placeable devices used to build test chambers and puzzles:

  • Weighted Companion Cube and Weighted Storage Cube - portable cubes used to hold down buttons and solve puzzles. Matching Cube Vents dispense fresh cubes.

  • Aerial Faith Plate - a launch pad that flings entities through the air in a set direction.

  • High Energy Pellet Launcher and High Energy Pellet Catcher - emit and receive a bouncing energy pellet, used to power puzzle elements.
  • Material Emancipation Grid - a field that deletes items passing through it, preventing players from carrying objects between chamber sections.
  • Electronic Intelligence Indicator - a status/feedback display block.
  • Portal Gun Pedestal - displays or hands out a portal gun.
  • Portal Spawner - generates portals at a fixed location.

These blocks can be combined to create authentic puzzle rooms where cubes, pellets, faith plates, and emancipation grids must be sequenced correctly to progress.

Turrets#

The mod adds automated turrets that act as hazards inside test chambers:

  • Sentry Turret - a standard turret that detects and fires on nearby players.
  • Oracle Turret - a special variant that delivers dialogue/voice lines rather than acting purely as a weapon.
  • Defective Turret - a malfunctioning turret, typically harmless, used for flavor.

Turrets can be toppled or knocked over, and they react to entities that move into their line of sight, making them useful as obstacles in player-built challenges.

Protective Gear and Other Items#

Because portals conserve momentum and can drop players from great heights, the mod includes Long Fall Boots (also sold/used as a pair) that protect the wearer from fall damage, letting players safely use high-speed portal flings.

The mod also adds several music discs featuring soundtrack pieces in the style of the Portal games, which can be played in a jukebox for ambiance in test chambers.

Mechanics#

Portals are placed by aiming the gun at a valid surface and firing each portal color. The two portals form a single linked pair, so any entity, item, or projectile that enters one emerges from the other.

Momentum conservation is the key movement mechanic: speed carried into a portal is carried out of the linked portal. By placing one portal on the floor and another on a wall, a falling player is redirected and launched horizontally, enabling long jumps and travel that would otherwise be impossible.

Cross-dimensional portals allow a player to maintain active portal pairs in multiple dimensions simultaneously, so the same gun can support several independent teleportation links at once.

Emancipation grids interact with the portal system by stripping carried items and closing portals that pass through them, which is how chamber designers force players to put down cubes before moving between sections.
